The Soundtrack of Your Life...

There are Johnny Cash and Social Distortion/Mike Ness songs that cover just about everything in my life from 14-26. Soundtrack will occasionally be punctuated by a song that wasn't recorded by the two above listed artists.

I could dedicate a different Social Distortion album to different years of my life. Which ones I related to best at different ages, based on when it got the heaviest rotation in my tape deck or CD player.

First was Somewhere Between Heaven & Hell...14-17

Then their self titled album, 18-19

Then Mommies Little Monster, 20

Then White Light, White Heat, White Trash 21-23

Mike Ness solo albums (Post Social D) were..

Cheating at Solitaire is pre-breakup, Under the Influences is usually Post-Breakup.

As far a Johnny Cash goes, I have about 40 of his CDs and Records, which are constantly in my rotation. they gather no dust.

Hey there Chrome - thanks for dropping by my thread...

there's something about Johnny Cash....

I love his version of the Soundgarden song... I really want that album....

Everytime I hear "Smile" by Nat King Cole ,I think of my Dad.... he always plays it and I try to live by it.

An old country song called "Pretty Blue Eyes",my grandad rocked me when I was young and sang it to me.

The song "Longer" by Dan Fogelberg, it reminds me of my grandparents...married 52 years and still in love.

Supertramp's "Take The Long Way Home" , my Mom's song.

REM's "Losing My Religion", Michael Stipe's voice always makes me happy.

The song "Tracy" by the Cuff Links, my mom loved it and named me after it.

ther is a Louis Armstrong song he sings....the name will come or I will hav to walkinto the living room to find the CD..
I tookit to work one day...and it was when I was working in the baby room...some people were going to get fired soon, one was in my room...there was tension lots of it...between the TEachr and staff..new teacher....really new..

and as the song started we three...the ones on my side of the room picked up a baby and we all began to dance....

I see trees of green
red rose too
I see them bloom for me and you
and I think to myself what a wonderful world
I see skies of blue
and clouds of white
the bright blessed day
the dark sacred night
and I think to myself
what a wonderful world
the colours of the rainbow
so pretty in the sky
are also on the faces of people going by
I see friends shaking hands
saying how do ya do
their really saying I love you
I hear babies cry
I watch them grow
they will learn much more thatn I 'll ever know
and I think to my self
what a wonderful world
what a wonderful world

oh yeah...

and time stood still and we danced
slow circles
rund the room and we smiled and lite up all over the place
the babies got quiet and there was

peace

we had an audience
of other rooms teachers looking at us....

magic
it was magic

Arte, my friend, this is a wonderful thread...I love you for doing this.

the young man who I go to for massages listens to Johnny Cash as he works...and I have found that it is quite soothing to hear Cash's voice.

I'm so glad to find other Louis fans! I have loved him since I was a small child - I think I was attracted to him for his smile as much as his music. Last Christmas my parents bought to "greatest" CDs of his music for me.

one other Christmas memory....

I love the band They Might Be Giants - they are goofy and I can dig goofy bands. I was riding along with my friend E., going to the discount store to shop for gifts - and TMBG's song about the sun came on the radio...

The sun is a mass
of incandescent gas
A gigantic nuclear furnace.... etc.

I started singing, because I'm a big ham in many ways and this song amuses me, and I'll be darned if E. didn't join right along with me. So we sat in the car, in the parking lot, singing this song til it was done at our best performance volume. Without a break - no laughing or anything. It was so unlike him, but so like me. It was such a moment for me - and one of the reasons I loved him so much. And one of the reasons I miss him so much, too.

last night while driving to the grocery store with my daughter...listening to the Country Western station....this song comes on

There is No Arizona.......I started singing along and so did My daughter......
and we knew all the words too........

no painted desert
no Sedona...

nice moment..

Love Louis' voice either talking or singing...and his smile lites up the darkness, too

I can't hear "Amazing Grace" or "The Old Rugged Cross" that I don't think of my mom. She had cancer and while going thru her whole ordeal ...she would sing those to me. I have tears in my eyes now ...just as I do when I hear them.

My family was very music oriented. We all could sing. My bro has played in many bands...and there are sooo many songs which remind me of him. Any Todd Rundgren...my brother sang them all....

soft kisses,

I never liked it as a Soundgarden song, but something about the Cash version of it makes all the hairs on my neck stand on end.

His 3 latest albums are all incredible pieces of work. A perfect showcase of what country should have evolved into, instead of that greeting card country crap that gets all the airplay. American Recordings, Unchained and Solitary Man WON'T disappoint you. About half the songs on these albums he wrote, which are exceptional. The cover songs on these albums are from an incredibly diverse roster of artists. Beck to Leonard Cohen, U2 to Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds. Glen Danzig even wrote him a song called Thirteen. If you liked "Wanted Man" which Bob Dylan wrote for him many years ago, you'll love Thirteen.

And I loved Social Distortion's cover of "Ring of Fire." Hank Williams III did a good cover of Cocaine Blues.

And just so it doesn't seem like I'm going off on a tangent and hijacking this thread, the final song on my life's soundtrack is going to be Cash's "Let The Train Blow The Whistle When I Go." Wonderful song for a wake!

Thanks Chrome - I was going to ask you for those album titles - and there they were before I got to it!

Great thread...

Though I have to admit to having a rather strange soundtrack to my life..well at least as far as my grandmother is concerned...

Whenever I think of her I can here ABBA in my head.

After that my entire teen and early twenties are one long smiths and morrissey song...

(yeah I was a happy ball of sunshine then)

After that I started DJing and my life became one long list of songs that no one would know.. but you'd all dance to them...

welcome PJs!

fave Smiths lyric...

well, Hell, I can't remember it - I'm drawing a blank at this moment. brain fart.

and, yes, you are now required to tell me what dance tunes you're playing... I'm always on the lookout for new stuff with which to "shake that ass"

Well my fav smith lyric oh damn too many... but among them are...

you can pin and mount me like a butterfly

and as for new songs to shake that ass too...

if you like house music... (which i do..)

Scream and Shout by Johnny Corporation
Bad Habit by AFTC presents one Phat Diva (This was the story of my ex and I... I got a bad bad habit baby and baby its you"
You Know You Like the Way You Work It... Angel Alanis (otherwise known as the "shake that ass and bounce those tits" song...

thats all i can think of for now..

One more thing!!

OK one more thing... speaking of soundtracks to your life.. i am oddly at an impass as to what song to use for my wedding.... sigh..

here is an idea of what we are thinking but none of them are "it"

At Last- Etta James
A Kiss to Build A Dream On
Dream a Little Dream -Mama's and Papa's version
Just the Two Of Us- Bill Whiters
Lovely Day- Bill Whithers
Lets Stay Together - Rev. Al Green

Personally I think the Smiths Unloveable would be good but...sigh

of your list, this would be my pick

of course, you could be a complete cheeseball and pick "White Wedding" by Billy Idol!

on a completely cheerful note...

the soundtrack of my life has no wedding songs, just love and destruction..

in college - Tracy Chapman's "Fast Car", in fact that whole album reminds me of an unrequited love... I can't listen to that album anymore.

after J. started dating someone else, I listened to Suzanne Vega "Solitude Standing" - especially the song where she hacks off her hair and takes the shade off of the light...

after G. it was Liz Phair "Exile in Guyville", especially the line that goes "you've never been a waste of my time, it's never been a drag, so take a deep breath, and count back from ten, and maybe you'll be alright"

....good times.... good times....

ahhhh exile in guyville... yes that is college... driving around in my friends car getting stoned out of my gourd...

I always liked flower... *weg*

gotta love a woman who can sing about the "c" word

my set would start and end with two Stones tunes; " Satisfaction" and "You can't always get what you want". I'll work out the in between and post it later.
