The plan wasn't to leave the apartment at all. The plan was to stay home, curled up with her boyfriend for the long stormy weekend. That WAS the plan, until she got home with movies and wine and found him with another girl. It was as if she had gone on autopilot. She had grabbed her keys and ran for the door. She couldn't face seeing them again. She jumped in her car and had started to drive. She had no where to go but to go back home to her parents. She was 26 and running back to mom and dad. It was a four hour drive and she was still about 2.5 hours from getting there. Of course she would be on a dark road with poor cell service when her car had decided to die on her. She smacked the stearing wheel in frustration. She looked around her and spotted one house with a light on. She took a chance and made the run for the front porch. By the time she got there her jeans fit like a second skin and her sweatshirt wieghed a good 15lbs full of water. Her long dark brown hair was drenched and in her face, her eyes were red from crying and her makeup had to be running down her face. She knew she must have been a fright but she took the chance and knocked on the door hoping she could use their phone......

Frank I answered the door and there was a soaked wisp of a girl asking if she could u

Of course I let her in, but had to explain that I didnt have a land line. I used a cell phone and sometimes it worked and sometimes it didnt.

Tghen afrter she has told me about the failure of her car, and i asked her who she planned to call from here at thus hour of the night and so far from the nearest town or repair facility. She had said she was headed to her parents house. Perhaps the best idea for a phone call was to try to let them know where she was and the situation and that she was OK.

Casually I told her I lived here alone and had for years so I knew the territory.

Handing her a big soft towel, I suggested she just spend the night and we would try to get her help in the morning.

She gave me the phone number and i tried to call on my cell phone.

Nothing happenned.

Dan was watching TV when he thought he heard a knock at the door, over the rumblings of thunder and the drumming sound of the driving rain, beating a cadence on his roof.
He loved this place, the isolation, away from the bustle of the nearest town, that was what had attracted him to the house in the first place.

As he got up out of his favourite chair and wandered to the door, he shook his head in disbelief.
'Who would be out in this maelstrom?' He thought, as he turned the handle and opened the door.

In front of him stood a younger woman, he'd guess mid-twenties, soaked to the skin, with her sweatshirt dripping, and her jeans stuck to her like a second skin. Her long brown hair was matted to the sides of her face, heavy with the water cascading down it, from her dash to his porch. He could smell the wet on her, as well as the cool night air, that peaty, thick smell that he enjoyed so much, which was why he used to love taking his dog, Bella on night walks, until she died of old age. He hadn't bought another dog, her loss too painful to bear.

"Are you OK? Can I help you?" He asked the young woman, who looked terrified.

Kali held her breath until the door was opened. Before her stood a pretty good looking guy...but she had to push that thought from her head.

"Hi, my car just broke down...and as I'm sure you are aware, your area isn't real great for cell phone service. I was hoping you had a phone I could use to call someone...." she looked at him, praying he would say yes.

This was all she needed, her night had gone from good, to bad, to the worst night ever...and at this point it didn't seem like it was going to change any time soon. The thunder was booming and she found herself having to speak over the thunder to be heard.

Dan stepped back inside, and motioned her in, out of the driving rain.
"Sure, come inside, please!"

He looked her up and down again, and decided that even dripping wet, she was pretty.

"You're soaked through - you really picked the wrong night to travel - where are you headed?"

She found herself laughing, "Yeah, you're tellin me. I'm heading to the Sandy area.... I know I've still got quite a ways before I am even close to there...." she pushed her hair back out of her face and rubbed under her eyes. Trying her best to get the mascara off that had found its way there.

She looked down at the floor where she was standing, "Oh gosh, Im making a huge puddle on your floor, do you have a towel I can clean it up with?"

Dan found himself laughing with her.
"Ummm sure....do you want to take a shower and change into something dry? You're about the same size as my ex-wife. Stay there, I'll get you a towel."

Dan hurried upstairs, and returned after a couple of moments with a large bath towel.

"I'll be in the Kitchen. Just leave your wet clothes on the mat there, and I'll pick them up and wash them, and dry them for you. My wife's clothes are in the second room on the left, as you go upstairs. There's allsorts in there, jeans, sweats, underwear, socks, everything. Help yourself. I'll make some coffee."

With that, Dan walked through to the Kitchen and started to fill the coffee machine.

Kali smiled as he hurried out of the room. Wow, it wasn't every day that you meet someone who was so thoughtful....it was refreshing. She took the towel and followed his directions to the room where the clothes were.

She opened a couple of drawers and pulled out what she needed....a tshirt and a pair of sweats...she changed quickly then found her way back to the entryway before following the sounds and found him in the kitchen.

"I just want to thank you... I feel so much better now...." she smiled at him, "You have a lovely home."

Dan was placing her wet things into the washing machine, and adding the powder, softener and detergent.
"You're welcome - and Thank You!" Dan replied, smiling.
"I love it up here, the silence, the solitude, and nature at its best. The birdsong in the morning drifting through the windows is just perfect, together with the scent from the cedar trees, makes every day worth living!"

He looked over at her, noticing an apparent absence of a bra, then enquired:
"I'm Dan, and you are?"

Kali watched as he put the clothes into the wash, she was able to picture exactly what he was discribing as he talked about his home and why he loved it so much.

"Wow, that is great. It all sounds so amazing. " she smiled, "Oh wow, I am so sorry I didn't introduce myself earlier.... I'm Kali."

He couldn't help himself - Kali was beautiful. He smiled as he accepted her introduction.
"I guess life is almost idyllic here, although I wish the next town was a little closer, like when I want Chinese take out!"

He continued:
"This storm is going to be a really bad one, you might as well get comfortable. Do you want something to eat? I have some barbecued salmon left from my dinner earlier, or I can make you something, like a ham & mushroom omelette, if you'd prefer. I have juices, coffee, tea, or something stronger, to warm you up?"

Kali laughed, "Well it is nice to meet you Dan." When he mentioned food Kali's stomach realized that she hadn't in fact eaten since that morning. With everything that had transpired she had totally forgotten, it had been the last thing on her mind.

"Yeah I suppose take out would be a problem in this area of the world." she smiled, running her fingers thru her hair, " and now that you mention food, I guess I am a little hungry... Don't go out of your way for anything, I am not a picky eater at all so whatever you have will be amazing."

Kali couldn't help but feel slightly attracted to this sweet, very good looking guy...

"This storm is crazy....of course I had to be stuck driving in it, normally I love storms.... I'd be all curled up on a couch listening to the wind and the rain.....and the thunder and lightning..." it made her smile to think of past storms where she had done just that very thing.

"Dan I hope I am not interupting your evening....I don't want to be rude or anything."

Kali's laughter was infectious.
"A beautiful damsel in distress? How could I not help her in her time of need?" He winked playfully as he said this.

He opened the fridge door and pulled out a plate with half a salmon fillet on it, slightly charred from his barbecue earlier, and also selected some salad in a bowl.

He then opened the other fridge door and pulled out a bottle of white wine.
Dan then asked: "We can sit here and listen to the storm, and chat, while you eat, unless you'd rather eat alone?"

He placed the items on the table and opened another cupboard and lifted out two wine glasses, then a plate, which he placed next to the food on the table. Last he opened the cutlery drawer and got a knife and fork, for Kali to eat with.

He indicated she should sit, and sat opposite her, across the small dining table, and poured two glasses of wine.

He lifted his own and tilted it towards her, in the time-honoured gesture of a toast.

"To beautiful storms, and those who try to travel through them. May God bless them, and allow us to marvel at their determination, in the face of nature's wrath."

He then sat back and appraised her again. She was similar in build and size to his late wife, Emma.

"The coffee!" He blurted out suddenly, as the machine started making its customary 'chuck-chuck' noise, when the brew was percolated and ready to pour.

"Would you like coffee too?" He asked.

Kali smiled when he referred to her as a damsel in distress. "Well this damsel sure does appriciate it."

She took a seat at the table, "Well of course I would love your company." she put some of the salad and the salmon on her plate and then raised her glass to chime with his.

"You really are too sweet for doing all this for me." she smiled at him before he jumped up for the coffee.

Laughing she shrugged her shoulders... "I could drink some once I finish this great meal for sure." she took another bite of the delicious food on her plate, "Wow, you are quite the cook."

When he returned to the table she smiled at him, "So tell me about yourself Dan...besides coming to the rescue of us Damsel's what do you do for work....and for fun I suppose." she smiled as she went back to the food on her plate.... taking a sip of the wine from time to time.

Dan really found himself warming to her. Her lilting laugh, and mischievous smile were irrestistible to him.

"Well, for work, I am a freelance retail shop layout designer. I tend to specialise in Building & Plumbing Materials and have recently had a commission to design a store for a famous Italian Lingerie brand. Now that was interesting, as they insisted I spend a day in a shop to see how their customers navigated the floor space and to familiarise myself with their stock range! I never thought I be paid for looking at women's underwear. Several of the young women were asking my opinions of vertian pieces, to see if they were suitable for a partner, I guess!"

After a pause he continued.
"As for fun, I shoot, targets mostly, just to keep my eye in. I used to be a sniper in the Air Force, years ago. I also enjoy cooking, and fishing, and I contribute to a couple of forums online."

He looked Kali in the eye and asked:
"What about you?"

Kali was impressed. It made her smile when he talked of his work in the lingerie shop, "Girls actually do ask guys what they think?" she laughed at the thought. "I couldn't imagine modeling in that stuff for a random guy in some store." she smiled at him.

"Wow, a Sniper huh?...That's impressive." When he mentioned cooking she laughed and nodded her head, "Well I must say you mastered the art of cooking, this is amazing."

She set her fork down and took a sip of wine before she responded back to his question to her, "Me? Umm, I'm pretty boring. I go to the performing arts school for dance. and then I work at one of the big bars as a bartender....." she smiled, running her fingers thru her hair. "As far as fun goes?...Umm I am more of a chill kinda girl...so I spend alot of my time just relaxing, taking it easy. I love to be outdoors so I am outside as much as I can be...but then there are certain days where just curling up on the couch sounds amazing, watching movies."

Just as Kali finished speaking, a large thunderbolt boomed almost directly overhead, as a bright flash of lightning could be seen through the windows, which shook with the shock.

"Thanks! I try to cook healthily and not succumb to the easy route of junk food too often, although there is something really nice about good ice cream, especially with a good movie."

As she revealed her attendance at the performing arts school, he remarked:
"Wow! You're a dancer? I guess that explains why you look so trim!"

He sipped his wine, then looked over the top of his glass at her, trying to decide.
'Was she coming onto him?'

His next thought was typically 'single' male:
'She does look good enough to eat. I wonder if she'd look as good as Emma used to in some of the lingerie upstairs?'

The thunder had Kali jumping a little. Which made her laugh. "Yeah it would be tough to totally eliminate junk food all together." smiling as she set her plate aside and sipped her wine...it warmed her insides as it went down her throat.

she laughed as he mentioned her being "trim" "Yeah, I try to stay fit....long days at the studio make it fairly easy....except of course for those nights I veg out on the couch eating ice cream" she winked at him.

She couldn't help but to be attracted to him....he was good looking, had a great house, was super sweet.....he seemed to be a genuine good guy and those were hard to come by these days....she knew that first hand.

Dan laughed at Kali's comment about ice cream.
"You know, the only thing better than eating good ice cream, is enjoying it with someone else. Do you have a favourite flavour? I love Haagen-Dasz' Cookies & Cream."

Dan then blushed and added:
"Well, actually there are better things than eating ice cream, but I shouldn't mention them in polite company!"
He laughed nervously, as he realised his awkward attempt at flirting could backfire horribly.
(He was really out of practice)

Kali laughed easily with Dan, "I have to say I love cookies and cream too....its gotta be one of my favorites."

She smiled when Dan mentioned other things that were better than ice cream, "You make a good point....there are a couple things that are better..... well, with the right partner." she winked playfully at him.

Dan laughed with her.
"Want some ice cream?" He asked with a glint in his eye.
As he got up from the chair, he added:
"You're absolutely right - with the right partner I can think of something very appealing! And another use for ice cream!"
He chuckled as he said that, relishing the memory that comment bought up from his past.

Kali shook her head laughing, she had a feeling what he was referring too and it made her smile. "I want you to know how much I appriciate everything you are doing for me... I mean, I didn't expect any of this at all....it's so sweet of u."

"It's my pleasure, Kali. You see, the way I was raised, I was taught to treat a lady like a lady, unless she wishes it to be otherwise."

He then looked at her differently.

"I meant what I said about the ice cream. I'd love to eat it off you!"

He then paused, then corrected himself.
"Err, I mean eat some with you!"

Kali smiled, it was refreshing to be spending the evening with someone who could hold a conversation with her and whom she found to be quite attractive.

She laughed, coughing a bit as Dan fumbled to correct his statement about eating ice cream off her. She smiled, "Sure...but only if you don't mind sharing with me." The thought of Dan actually eating ice cream off of her sent her mind straight to the gutter...not that she minded the mental image....it actually sounded pretty fun.... she shook her head to clear the thoughts.
