Tuesday early evening - Carter makes a statement
James and Rita listened intently to Anna talk about herself. They knew Carter well enough that if he wanted this woman for his wife, he knew what he was doing. They had seen other women come and go over the years but none caught his eye and his heart the way this young woman did. She was charming and even though she was nervous, they both saw the underlying quality Carter saw in her. She had good manners and was well spoken, at least when she was not nervous. But then, she was thrown into a situation where she was compelled to act quickly. Both of them caught on quickly how she was able to think for herself. Plus, she had a quick wit and not afraid of Carter. A lot of women in his past were totally intimidated by his rough edges. When she called him names like ogre, he seemed to relish in the banter she brought forth.
When she talked about keeping their marriage a secret, James had gathered as much from the way Carter was acting over the past few weeks. He knew Carter was in the midst of trying to figure out something important. He didn’t know what it was but with the fake ID’s Carter had him secure, he figured it had to do with the company. Carter was sometimes moody but it was not so much a bad mood, but one where he was contemplating a lot of issues at work. This must be something important for them to keep the pending marriage a secret.
Rita assured both of them that she and James would keep it a secret. They had been with Carter a long time and knew how to be secretive when the occasion called for it. James smiled as Anna and Rita exchanged words, seeing a sense of relief crease Anna’s face.
James looked at the young woman sitting across from him, her smiled radiant as she gazed at Rita and then at Carter. “You can rest assured Ms. Brayden that we will honor you and Mr. Anderson’s request to keep anything and everything a secret until such time we are informed otherwise. And we know you will take care of him just as we have.” James stopped for a moment and then looked at Carter as if to ask his permission. When Carter nodded, he looked back at Anna.
Reaching over the table to grasp her other hand, he and Rita looked directly into her green shimmering eyes. “You see my dear, we also have a very deep fondness for Carter but you may never tell him about it.” Carter laughed and shifted nervously in his chair.
“A long time ago, a young man reached out to save us.” All three saw Anna’s eyes grow wider with curiosity. “I am ex-military and the head of security for a transportation company. I heard through the grapevine that some of the cargo we were transporting were young women bound for the coast and then overseas. I kept it to myself and was about to contact the authorities when I found out Carter was trying to buy the company as another arm for his company. Instead of going to federal marshal’s office, I had a chance meeting with Carter when he came to inspect the operations.”
James stopped and looked directly at Carter. This was something no one had ever been told and he waited for Carter’s approval to continue. “Carter and I talked about security issues and then I told him what I suspected. He was appalled that someone would be involved in human trafficking. He also knew that the officials in the local office were on the take and rather than call in the authorities, he had his own team infiltrate the company. When it was confirmed, his men took matters into their own hands.”
James felt Rita squeeze his hand hard and saw a tear form at the corner of her eye. “Rita. His voice cracked. “Rita was on the last truck load to be shipped overseas. I found out she had no family and was duped by a woman to join a modeling agency. But it was no modeling agency.” James voice wavered thinking about that day he saved her from a life of sex abuse and slavery. “So, you see young lady we have a lot to be grateful for with Carter. He brought us here and we swore our allegiance to him. We would never do anything to hurt him and now that you are to part of his family, we will do whatever we need to do to protect you.”
There was stunned silence around the room. Carter looked at his trusted servants and then at Anna. “That’s quite a story and one that should never be repeated. There are men probably still looking for him for ruining a very lucrative business venture.” He turned to James, seeing Rita wipe away a tear.
“You are my only family up until now. I really appreciate all you have done for me over the years since I don’t have any family left.” He turned his attention to Anna, seeing compassion written on her face.
Then abruptly he turned back to the couple. “Tomorrow we are headed out for a few days. I will make reservations in your names at the MGM and you will fly direct with no stopovers to Vegas for a few days of fun in the sun.” James was about to object but Carter held up his hand.
“Tomorrow night we will meet you at the Chapel of Love. You two have served me well and when we get married, I don’t want some strangers standing in for us at the Chapel of Love.” There was a snicker from everyone thinking about the chapel where quick marriages were performed. “I won’t take no for an answer. Everyone will be thinking we are in New Orleans and our only contact will be at the chapel. Anna and I will be staying at the Mirage and with thousands of people gambling and walking around town, our paths won’t cross. Besides you two haven’t taken a great vacation in a long time.”
He thought for a second that he should have cleared this with Anna but they were family to him. When the whole sordid mess was over, he would meet her family and they could reenact the wedding. “What do you think Anna? Would it be ok with you if we have James and Rita stand up for us? They won’t by a burden on our fun, I promise.”
