This thread borrows concepts from a variety of sources, but is otherwise a pretty generic epic fantasy thread. I'll post what I've come up with, and if anyone is interested we can get started. I only ask that participants be able to write concrete posts, including proper spelling, grammar, etc.
About the world
The world that I've created is home to a variety of races, but the dominant ones are: High Elves, Dark Elves, Dwarves, Humans, Orcs, Gnomes and Goblins.
Humans, Orcs and High Elves make up the majority of the worlds population, with Dwarves and Dark Elves filling the gaps. Gnomes and Goblins are not as common, but they are still present in the world at large. There are a few areas of the world where the races fight over the land and its natural resources, but for the most part there is relative peace in the world. The world itself is composed of three large landmasses, with smaller isles dotting the rest of the planet (I have a map that I'll post later to give you a better visual).
About the characters
While you are free to create any character you wish, I have come up with a few guidelines to follow. Nearly every race, save for the Gnomes and Goblins, are capable fighters, and not every race is capable of using magic. If you feel like breaking the mold, please come up with a plausible reason why. I'm pretty flexible so feel free to ask.
Class Structure
High Elves - Warrior, Scout, Cleric and Mage
Dark Elves - Warrior, Scout/Thief, Mage and Warlock
Humans - Warrior, Scout, Hunter, Cleric, Mage and Warlock
Orcs - Warrior, Warlock, Shaman, Hunter
Dwarves - Warrior, Hunter, Cleric
Gnomes - Scout, Mage, Warlock
Goblins - Scout, Warlock
The Warrior Class
High Elven warriors typically use one-handed swords and shields for defense, and can dual wield if necessary.
Dark Elven warriors typically use one-handed swords, axes and maces, and also use shields for defense.
Human warriors use a variety of weapons, including one and two-handed swords, maces/warhammers and axes.
Dwarven warriors are far more proficient at using warhammers and axes than they are at wielding a sword.
Orc warriors use a combination of swords and axes, but generally don't use shields.
Scouts
Nearly all scouts/thieves favor using smaller weapons such as daggers for combat, and they are extremely proficient at using ranged weapons like the bow. Some of the taller races may carry a sword, but not usually. Scouts are extremely proficient at using ranged weapons, such as the bow.
Clerics / Mages
Clerics and Mages typically don't arm themselves very well, preferring to use staves and daggers but relying on their magical abilities to do their work. Clerics have the strongest healing spells of any class, while Mages have the strongest offensive spells.
Clerics can either focus their powers towards Light or Dark, and Mages find their affinity towards either Fire or Frost.
Warlocks
Only a small number of people in the entire world focus their powers towards Necromancy, and are generally shunned by the civilized world. They use dark magic to summon smaller demons into the world to do their bidding, and can use their abilities to slowly corrupt the world around them.
Shaman
A class available only to Orcs, Shamans harness the elemental forces for either restorative purposes or to unleash natures fury.
Hunters
Those races that have learned to tame the wild beasts in the world find them to be a valuable asset. Hunters are proficient at using ranged weapons, staves, and swords. Certain races favor certain pets. Orcs, for instance, are more likely to have a wolf as a pet than a dog, whereas a Human would most likely choose a dog as a pet as opposed to a wolf. Dwarves are one of the few races that are capable of taming bears.
Hunter Pets
If you choose to be a hunter, you can choose one of the following pets: dog, cat, wolf, owl, bear, hawk.
Dogs have medium strength and intelligence, are excellent trackers and very obedient.
Cats have higher dexterity and medium intelligence, lower strength. They rely on cunning rather than brute force.
Wolves have medium strength, dexterity and intelligence. They hunt in packs and make excellent pets if raised properly.
Owls are generally non-offensive pets, best suited for scouting missions at night as they have extremely high intelligence.
Bears have the highest strength available to a pet, and are not very agile.
Hawks make excellent day time scouts, and are good ranged attackers.
