Preparing for the family reunion sort of thing at Ocean City, New Jersey.
It was weird last year; easily anticipated consequences of politics of that moment.
I am curious to see if it is healing or still weird.
Not hopeful, but willing to be surprised.

The US Virgin Islands are a 4 hour direct flight from a nearby airport. I think I may need a real beach trip to recover from the Jersey Shore. Assateague (near Chincoteague of the wild horses fame) is also an option, but no good snorkeling locations.

Any food or other suggestions for someone visiting Denmark (Billund to be more specific)?

US Virgin Islands are a great option. Been there many times, even got married there. Great snorkeling and beaches. Scuba diving is good to, a number of wrecks. You can even pop over to the BVI and dive the Rhône, they filmed The Deep on that wreck.

I’ve last been to Billund in 1999, so I can’t really tell much about that specifically.

An obvious choice in Denmark is smørrebrød. It’s not just a tourist thing. I like the places where they bring you a small selection rather than make you pick just one huge sandwich. Attached a pic from one such place this July, a selection for two. It was good 🤩

Also hotdogs, Danish people love hotdogs. The iconic ones are the red hotdogs, rød pølse. Honestly, I don’t even know if they sell other kind.

Baked goods are really good and the selection is wide, definitely try some out. Pork everywhere. Seafood too.

Wadden sea national park is pretty close to Billund and it’s a place I’d love to visit one day.

This site got some decent information:

https://www.visitdenmark.com/denmark/destinations/jutland/billund

I have not been in Billund for some years, but it is a truly quaint place!

Other than that:
@seela is right, Smørrebrød, Sønderjysk kaffebord (a special cake/coffee table in southern Jutland, definitely something regional that is worth a try!), Sønderjysk sausages are pretty amazing!

Danish hotdogs (en hotdog med det hele, tak!), A visit to a Danish baker and a Danish Konditor should also be on your list.. (I really hope you like walking, our food is pretty calorie dense!).

Depending on when you guys arrive, you should see if you could taste some "æbleflæsk" - Apples and bacon, do not let it scare you, it is pretty darn amazing!!

Fish.. marinated herrings and snaps (akvavit).

You are near the warden sea, and a month that ends on "r" - which means you could literally go and pick up oysters and eat them!!
Danish oysters are a real delicacy.

... There are so many things to eat!

Just avoid burgers and pizza, things that you can buy everywhere.
Go for the smaller local places.

In my youth... We had something called "morgen værtshuse" a kind of pubs that was open until 0700 in the morning, those places usually served a hearty stew for breakfast!!
Not saying that you need to go drinking all night.. but the food was good (or maybe I were so bloody tired back then, in my university days 😂)

Enjoy your visit!!

😁

Oh, this is interesting. Bread is considered to be too simple here, so it is usually not served here as a dish (except as part of a regular breakfast); which is a shame. Thanks for the keywords to look for. :)

Well, I can skip that part, the Wadden sea is part of Germany, too.

Yeah and kinda pisses me off, because it's actually just places all over Denmark and the regional location just a SEO trick.

It's like: "Hey, you are staying in Hamburg? The Viktualienmarkt in Munich is awesome."

Edit:
Oh and thank you for the other suggestions :)

Oysters and alcohol are not my thing, but hearty stews? Count me in.

Depending on when you guys arrive

Just me guy. It's going to be a test run for a single + non-group vacation, too. I've checked the remaining PTO days I have for this year and I could stop working at the 23th November for the rest of the year and I felt this large chunk to be somehow pretty pointless.

The wadden sea is a national park in Denmark.. and it reaches into Germany.

But.. it is truly a Danish place.

I do honestly not know much about Billund, as it is really Southern Denmark, and closely connected with Germany.
Both culturally, economically and geographically.

So you will not be able to avoid some German influence there.

- just like the Swedes from Malmö often find jobs here in Copenhagen, there are lots of Germans working in Billund.

😁

Rugbrød.

Well... Here it is considered the main part of a meal, and actually the most preferred/normal thing to have for dinner.

It is in no way a fancy thing. Just practical and it can be rather social (I grew up with "rømme køleskabe lørdag" Every Saturday the whole family would eat smørrebrød together, while also emptying the fridge from leftovers.)

Food here tends to be super simple and practical. 😅

Just got back from a quick trip to Cabo for our anniversary.
Secrets in San Jose is a very quiet beautiful place with Adults only atmosphere. 2 huge infinity pools. 3 speciality restaurants Italian, Japanese, Mexican all fantastic. Excellent pool service, wife shocked me with a couple of balcony fucks as well she found a porn channel on the TV.
