I know what a voluntary sketch would be, yui, but what is an involuntary sketch

It might be sort of like those involuntary leg spasms…only you doodle instead. :D

Truthfully, I don't know exactly why the sketches were "involuntary", that is just the literal meaning. Linguistic Theory isn't my strong point or I would offer all sorts of dazzling reasons sure to impress you. ;)

You don't need dazzling theories to impress me. I'm already impressed.

One thing you might do, is challenge yourself as a writer. Try another category or find a different slant on Gay Male. In other words, take risks. You could even use a different name for those stories. That way there's no risk of "riding on your rep."

Uh... well actually....

Involuntary or automatic art was a very central concept for the dadaists, which see.

They invented the "exquisite corpse," a sort of collaborative drawing done by several people who didn't see the other pieces of the drawing. It survives as an entertainment for small children and a party game for art freaks, but they meant it.

I think, although they write of it in a way deliberately to obfuscate it, that automatic art was intended to be like automatic writing, a link below the conscious mind in some way. No one can say for what purpose any more, since Dali is dead and the rest of the dadaists have likewise moved on.
