There's No Greater Sacrifice.
But also, there is no other option for the people. After weeks and weeks waiting and praying for a rain that never came, the message was clear. More than enough clear. The time had come for the people to offer one of their own to the Great Spirits, the beings from the elements, so that they would grant the boom of water and grain once more, and the people would feast upon it. And be grateful.
A number to members of the people's priesthood stood over the tall mountain. The Forbidden Mountain, it was called - for none should dwell in it beyond the Great Spirits except in the times of the Demanding Rituals such as this... There was a temple - made of finely worked rock, a large square circled by thick pillars of stone, completely encrusted with the words and runes of power. A place of great magic. The geometric patterns run over every inch of this square, lifted from the ground by a sizeable platform, with great stairs leading upwards.
These priests had sung in praise for the Spirits, dancing and jumping in a frenetic, desperate attempt to appease those incorporeal beings that should watch over their people... but none had appeared. For three days, the ritual went on, and nothing ever happened. The elders considered that some offense had been taken by the mighty beings, and the people was being denied their support and wardenship.
Why?
Why where their Ancestors, their Protectors denying them the blessing of rain? The crops were withering, and dying. And soon the people would follow, should the unshakeable Spirits neglect them. A time of desperate attempts followed. A girl had been immolated, to no avail. No. It was time for the very High Priestess of the people to lay alone over the square, after the others were dismissed... and make an attempt to consort with the Gods.
