But isn't that still an internal matter?
They could simply require testing

It's not simply that, no. Victor Conte, Patrick Arnold, and Greg Anderson all served time in jail in connection with BALCO (where players like Bonds and Olympians like Marion Jones received their drugs from), and long before Congress got involved it was being investigated by the Federal District Attorney, the IRS, and the FDA.

In what way is it not that simple?
Test.
Fail test?
Fired.
Problem solved.
I think you are trying to rationalize why the steriod use wasn't stopped under the idea that baseball wanted the steroid use stopped.
It makes much more sense to think that baseball DIDN'T want steroid use stopped and thats why it continued.

Oh no, baseball definitely had no interest in wanting it stopped while it was "secret" and making them a boat load of money.

And, that's basically the system they have in place now. 50 games on your first positive test, 100 (I think?) on your second, and I think it's a lifetime ban on your third. Something along those lines, anyway.

But my point was that it's not only an internal matter. You don't go to jail for breaking baseball rules.

Well, then, what I'm saying is that these guys should be allowed to destroy their bodies however they want.

As people not employed by the MLB, or part of the Player's Union, sure. If they want to be part of the Collective Bargaining Agreement, that's not possible now.

Why does the fact that they are employed by MLB matter?
Look, if baseball wants them to do this, and they want to do it, why shouldn't they be allowed to do it?

Well.. like I said earlier, the fans don't want it. The Player's Union didn't want the testing, either. But after BALCO, it was clear to even them that fans weren't going to accept them not having testing. Once it's confirmed that players are using, you can't unring that bell.

OK, so what you are saying is...
1. Baseball is fine with the doping.
2. Players are fine with the doping.
3. The union was fine with the doping.
4. Fans don't want the doping.
Therefore, legal action.

You might as well say
1. Production companies like making shitty TV.
2. Networks like showing shitty TV.
3. Actors like being in shitty TV
4. Audiences hate shitty TV.
Therefore, legal action

Distributing steroids is actually illegal. Victor Conte went to jail, in part, on the crime of "conspiring to distribute steroids." That's the part you're forgetting in your steps above. Actual crimes were committed, therefore legal action.

If it was strawberry milkshakes that were making players better but the fans didn't want them, there would've been no legal action.

ANd what I'm saying is that making it a crime for you to deal with your body however you want is insane.

On that, we don't entirely disagree.

And, I believe it's not strictly illegal to distribute them, it just has to be done in connection with a diagnosed medical condition.

That, or I sent out a lot of illegal shit once upon a time.

*shrug* if you want to destroy yourself with steroids or heroin, that's up to you.
In both cases, this should be seen as a public health issue, not criminal

For the most part, I agree with you. I think there should still be some controls on them, just as there are alcohol, but otherwise.. yeah.

You still have failed to make the case as to why the congress needed to get involved. This is not a matter for legislators. The laws were already on the books. The problem was one of law enforcement, not politicians needing to be in the limelight for something like this. The politicians gets involved in too many things like this that they have no business in, wasting hundreds of thousands, if not millions of taxpayer money, for nothing more than the opportunity to grandstand about their own opinions.

I am happy That FD has appeared on Lit I hadn't wanted to disturb his thread.

Quietly I glide closer holding up the mistletoe, blushing as I stand on tip toe to place a small kiss gently on his lips before quickly stepping back giggling.
