Thread for MMORPG/PC/Books games geeks

dammit folks. All these posts and not one about the biggest MMO of 05'
If the biggest MMO if 05 is FF then heh good for you I dont consider the entire series MMO's LOL :D. Kidding and cybering pleaseeeeeee keep it out of the PG games for crying out loud. And coming to the biggest MMO I dont know I tried almost every one of the games (even the korean ones trying to play without knowing wth the game is about) but for me the best MMO around will and always be Anarchy Online (AO). Its a bit more complicated than your avg mmo, while almost every other avatar in it looks the same (in terms of armor etc) it has been the most challenging game I have played. And coming to WoW why in the world is this game so popular when other big budget, highly anticipated, well conceived games are only seeing a fraction of the subscribers WoW is? What is driving people to Blizzard’s offering in droves? The answer can be found in the game itself. While other developers have spent time introducing new features and retooling the formula that has worked in many other games, Blizzard has taken all the best features of the standard MMORPG and amplified them. While some argue that WoW and AO are two complete diff genres I think they are pretty much the same. Unfortunately having been playing AO for the past 4yrs I have pretty much played out all the Profs with my fav Profs reaching the highest lvl possible ingame.

I'm really desperate for a good (single player) RPG. Oblivion's not out til March, if then. Gothic 3 prolly not until later. I'm counting the days til Call of Cthulhu, and hoping that won't be rolled back again. That's not RPG but it's the only thing I'm interested in at the moment.

I've been looking at the Vampire: The Masquerade, Bloodlines website hoping the devs were making another game and I started to remember what fond feelings I have for that game. I'd like something like that.

There is Fable I suppose, but that sounds silly.

WoW

I'm so glad to see a game post on a GLBT site :D

I play World of Warcraft waaaay too much for the good of my social life (the only reason I'm not on now is because they're doing their weekly update!), but I love it. It is a wonderful game and I highly recommend it. There are a lot of kids on, but it is not difficult to find the adults. I have made good friends, some I have met in person, and all have been very cool with my being gay.

I found it tough to find a good guild at first, but that was my only real hurdle in the game. Once I found one, I had all the help I could possibly need as well as company. WoW is so huge that it can get lonely soloing all the time.

If you're thinking of playing, send me mail in game (there are mailboxes near the inns in most towns) and I'll meet you and show you around. I'm on the Dragonblight server, on the alliance side. (the server is pretty full, but if you are in a que when you log on, wait and you'll be able to create a character) Or if you're already playing, I'd love to meet you! My characters are Ralin (lvl 49) and Brunhylde (lvl 26). My guild is Malovelent Spirits. ;)

I just found out about D&D Online, and it looked really good and I started drooling and then it hit me... Online! Another goddamn mmorpg! As if we needed another one. Damn I hate them. Well, I don't so much hate them as hate the fact they don't make single player campaigns for them. It would seem like a modest thing to do since they've done all the work already, but no. It's like there's an aversion to single player these days, like no one wants to make a single player game (or a mmorpg with a single player component) for fear of being uncool. Too bad I don't have any friends who play these games.

And did you mean Dungeon Siege 2? That's been out for ages, and I liked it. I'm hanging out for an expansion.

God I just want something good to play, I'm climbing the walls!

Have you played Disciples 2? Anyone?

wait DS2 is out ages ago??? mmm must be the online beta then what I played lol and I think D&D there is a single player version. The one I played during alpha stage was single player that much am sure of. And yeah played disciples 2 quite sometime ago was fun :). Another game comes to mind very very very old age around late 1990s Lords of Magic really loved that one. Another one is warlords battlecry. Played only part 1 and 2 though.

Darn it I want to play Disciples 2 but I can't find it. I ordered Dragonshard and I'm looking forward to that. Have you played that?

Yeah I had a little look at Heroes of Might and Magic 4 but it looks a little dated for me, but there's number five coming and I'll definately have a good look at that.

The first MMORPG I got into was City of Heroes. The only reason that one had staying power for me was because I’m a huge comic book geek, so it had lots of appeal. I’ve tried WoW and AO and neither one really grabbed me all that much. WoW has to many little kids.

As far as single player console games go I’m tolerating the Xenosaga series because I’ve hear so many good things about Xenogears. I’m planning on getting Dragon Quest sometime soon. Kingdom Hearts was the last bad ass console RPG I finished.

Pen and paper wise I get together a couple times a month and play AD&D: Iron Kingdoms with some dudes I work with. I’ve also been hearing good things about the Serenity game too. I’m a little more hesitant about getting involved with those psychotic browncoat types though.

I find pen and paper the most rewarding way to roleplay…outside the bedroom.

I used to love pen and paper games. Traveller and Dudge Dredd. But now I don't have friends who are interested. One time I tried to get the guys from work into it but it didn't work out. They thought it was something you could get on the piss and get in to, then they realised they'd have to read and stuff.

Computer games are good coz you can play alone, but now even that's threatened with the trend for MMOL games.

oh yeah dragonshard played the demo and loved it :) not gonna buy though prolly will download it of mirc for free lol :nana:. I only buy rts games rest of the pc games am a freebie :D

sooo who reads books any books fiction fantasy scifi erotic name it. Some of the best books or series I have read so far till date

The client-John Grisham (my first book read it in 6th grade)

Chariots of the Gods-Erich Von Daniken

Wheel of Time Series-Robert Jordan

Arthuerian Legend Series-Jack Whyte (The skystone is the first part)- A must read mixing fiction with history

The Da Vinci Code- Dan Brown

Illiad-Holmer

My secret garden+forbidden flowers-Nancy Friday (not a coffee table book :D)

Havent read any recently am afraid Jordan has completely converted me to fantasy realm and and now having read a few from others though good dont match upto him. David Eddings, Brian Jacques. Anyone read any of the The Dragonlance Saga (Dragons of Autumn Twilight, Dragons of Winter Night, & Dragons of Spring Dawning) have to try that one but didnt start coz there were like 30-40 I think lol.

I used to read a lot more before I was a WoW addict, but I still find time for my favorite authors. These include:

Jim Butcher - The Dresden Files

Laurell K. Hamilton - Anita Blake Series

Charlaine Harris - Sookie Stackhouse Series
(Her new book/series looks good too - Grave Sight)

Kelly Armstrong - Women of the Otherworld series

Rachel Caine - Weather Wardens series

J.D. Robb (Nora Roberts) - In Death series

Katie McAlister - Aisling Grey series (much lighter than the others listed here)

Janet Evanovitch - Stephanie Plum Series (very funny)

wow am completely lost hehehe and I thought I was an avid reader when I dont even know any of the authors you have mentioned lol. Any of them in fantasy setting :D. I live too much in the goblin world lol.

It turns out Dragonshard isn't that hot. It's basically a dumbed down rpg dungeon crawl. The rts element seems tacked on. You have a party, comprised of different types of untils, and you run around above ground and in dungeons doing quests, which is cool, and gathering gold and dragonshards so you can build a base and top up your party or replace a guy if he's killed. The "missions" are simply to get to the end of the map where the story is updated with a little cut scene. Then there's a new area with basically the same kind of thing.

So far there's no rts kind of battles that we're used to where you have a base that you have to defend, and build up your forces to smash the other guy and destroy his base. There's non of that so far. Maybe the multi player is where the big battles like that come in. But I don't play multi player.

They didn't do the base, or city, very well either. Instead of placing buildings on the terrain where you want, you have a walled city with little pads on it, and you build stuff there. I don't know why they did it like that it's most unsatisfying.

The maps and graphics are nice though. Good for kids but it's boring me to tears. I just needed something to tide me over to Dark Corners of the Earth.

Edit: I spoke too soon. Suddenly I've got a full scale battle on my hands. The RTS part of the game has just kicked in, and I'm faced with swarms of these lizard guys. Swarms of em! It's a bit more interesting now. Challenging!

Edit: No, I'll have to stick to my original assesment that it sucks. You make hoards of guys and the enemy makes hoards of guys and you wipe each other out, go back to your base make another hoard while the enemy does the same... wipe each other out again and so on. Not getting anywhere. And the game chugs, despite my 6800, coz the whole screen is alive with guys. I'll probably give up actually.

Fantasy yes, but not traditional fantasy, more alternate reality settings.

Jim Butcher - The Dresden Files - Harry Dresden lives in a modern, alternate reality version of Chicago. He is the only wizard listed in the Chicago phone book. This one has a private eye feel with a lot of supernatural baddies afoot.

Laurell K. Hamilton - Anita Blake Series - Anita Blake stories are also set in an alternate modern reality where vampires are legal citizens, and all kinds of others, such as were animals and fairies exist. The main character is an "Animator" She has an affinity for the dead and raises zombies for a living. On the side, she is a vampire executioner, when they get rowdy she is the one who puts a stop to it.
This is a really good series, very dark, can be a little rough on the blood and gore side if you're not into that (not like Anne Rice vamps at all) I can't possibly do it justice here. If you're curious, pick up Guilty Pleasures, first book in the series.

Charlaine Harris - Sookie Stackhouse Series - Sookie is a barmaid from rural Louisiana who has a "Handicap", she's a telepath. This is also a vampire centered alternate reality where they are legalized citizens due to the invent of synthetic blood. The gore factor is less than in the LKH books.
A very interesting and entertaining series. Dead Until Dark is the first book, I believe. (Don't let the cover art turn you off)
(Her new book/series looks good too - Grave Sight)

Kelly Armstrong - Women of the Otherworld series - The first book in this series is centered around the only female Werewolf and her pack. Others alternate between Elena (the wolf) & Paige who is a witch. I personally like the witchy books better.

Rachel Caine - Weather Wardens series - This book centers around a group of people who use magic to keep the earth from tearing itself apart through controlling the weather. Interesting and entertaining.

J.D. Robb (Nora Roberts) - In Death series - This series is set slightly in the future. Eve Dallas is a New York City Cop. A very interesting world with endearing characters.

Katie McAlister - Aisling Grey series (much lighter than the others listed here) This series offers magic and dragons in a modern setting. It's very light and romancy.

Janet Evanovitch - Stephanie Plum Series (very funny) Stephanie is a skip tracer for a bail bonds office. Very funny series, though no fantasy.

mmm thankx for the info will try hamilton and armstrong :) and yeah human male dragon shard is a bit like warlords battlecry except it has dungeons.

Played a great deal of NWNs, but that was about it for MMORPGs.

Mostly stick to paper and pencil RPGs of all kinds. v3.5 and Shadowrun4 looks like what I'll be playing for a while. :)

mmm a bit like secondlife with more monster bashing heh. never mind I take it back secondlife graphics are way better.

Game of Choice: Guild Wars - Characters: Naia Kara, Min the reader, Grizzly Orso Peloso

Authors:

R.A. Salvatore

Robert Jordan - Wheel of Time

Terry Goodkind - Sword of Truth - Which is damn good and I can't wait for the next book to come out this spring.

I know I am not the only Bi guy on Guild Wars... so I guess I am nothing Special.
