Thunder Follows Lightning

Isobel saw Matthew’s amusement at her outburst and it made her both slightly embarrassed that she had been so passionate in the company of a young man and proud of her honesty and forthrightness. She was indeed chafing under all the attentions she was getting to be perfect – although she DID understand the importance of having things just so for the looming ball.

As he spoke of his reasons for being in that part of town she ducked her head and blushed a little, and would have squirmed in delight and anticipation of receiving such a well thought out gift.

Both ladies curtseyed low as their carriage approached and they both climbed carefully in. Isobel leant out of the window watching Matthew depart for as long as she could get away with before slumping back against the seat as they sped through the city to their engagement

The following week passed in a blur of entertaining guests and beginning preparations for the ball. One morning Isobel mentioned to her mother that it would be a good time to invite Matthew for that turn around the park and perhaps they could even invite him back for high tea? Mrs Griffiths agreed and wrote a note to the guardsman’s barracks, inviting him around the following day. She and her daughter then pored over a small menu for the refreshments during the afternoon before Isobel had to attend her last but one fitting for her debutante’s dress. The final fitting would come the day before the ball and the dress would be delivered the following morning. All of the social engagements drained Isobel and so, when she returned from her afternoon’s visits she dined alone in the parlour and retired immediately, falling into sleep almost as soon as her head hit the pillow.

The next morning she woke late and rose to break her fast. Her mother was answering correspondence in the dining room and waved a letter at Isobel from Matthew, confirming that he would indeed, be delighted to join them for a turn around the park that afternoon and refreshments afterwards. Isobel spent the morning answering correspondence of her own and embroidering some functional linens for her charity work. After a light lunch she returned to her room where she had ordered some hot water for washing. She washed carefully, pinning her hair up and donning a deep crimson velvet dress that hugged her figure and contrasted beautifully with her pale skin. Her mother knocked on her bedroom door and the two descended the staircase to where her father was waiting and all 3 wrapped cloaks around themselves and slid gloves onto hands as the weather had turned quite bitter.

The Griffiths' lived quite close to the park and opted to walk there. When they arrived they found Colonel James waiting for them dressed, as usual, very smartly in his uniform. Isobel hung back a moment to let her parents greet the young man before coming forward herself and dropping him a slight curtsey, threading one gloved hand into the crook of his arm as they began a stroll around the wide walkways of the park. The group split into pairs, Matthew and Isobel walking a few steps ahead of Mr and Mrs Griffiths, and each pair chatting away happily. They made a full circuit of the park and noticed the sun had fallen low in the sky, casting a pale pink glow over the whole park. Isobel’s parents then led the way back to the warmth of the house.

This time, as it was a more casual affair, they dined in the warmth and cosiness of the parlour. As they ate the range of sandwiches and small cakes that had been laid on they discussed the arrangements for the following week. Mr and Mrs Griffiths informed Matthew that they had engaged a pair of small, two person carriages, and that they would entrusting Isobel’s safety to him for the drive to the ball and back. They asked if he would prefer for them to arrange for the carriage to collect him at his lodgings or if he would prefer to meet at the house.

By now Isobel’s cheeks had flushed slightly with tiredness and the warmth of the room. Her head felt heavy and wistfully her parents ushered her from the parlour and up to her room as they called for the carriage to take Colonel James home, eliciting a promise from him that he would attend them the following week for the ball

Matthew had arrived at the park before the Griffiths family, and waited patiently near a fountain, enjoying the gentle tinking sound of the water cascading back out of the spout and into the shallow pool below. His mottled reflection looked back at him, and the smell of the damp grass nearby filled his nostrils.

It was a great day to be alive!

He was lost in a day-dream, imagining Isobel dressed in a filmy white gown, with a light breeze rippling it around her wonderful figure, the gauzy material, pressed gently against her firm breasts, and her hair whipping across her face in the same breeze.

He jolted back to reality to realise that Miss Isobel and her parents were now in the park and walking towards him.

He strode to meet them, and greeted Mr. & Mrs. Griffiths first, as custom dictated, whilst Miss Isobel hung back, in deference to her parents.

Isobel was a vision, with her pale skin a counterpoint to her crimson velvet dress. As she curtseyed to him, he bowed to her, and offered his arm. She threaded a gloved hand in to the crook of his arm and they then started to walk, as two pairs separated by a discrete distance.

The time seemed to pass so quickly, as he and Isobel chatted about the upcoming ball, and what they hoped would happen there, with dancing and dining. There would still be chaperones, of course, but Isobel was obviously intelligent and indepedently minded. Matthew saw her in a different light after her last outburst, but wanted her even more, if that were possible.

As they retire to the Griffiths residence, as the sun sank low in the sky, he was ushered into their Parlour, and offered a selection of sandwiches and small cakes that had been laid on they discussed the arrangements for the following week.

Matthew replied that he would like to meet Miss Isobel at the house, as he was supposed to be escorting her!

Miss Isobel had obviously had a full day, as with face flushed, she bade Matthew a good evening, and with a wan smile, was taken to her room by her mother, whilst Mr. Griffiths summoned the carriage to take Matthew home, and then follwed the ladies upstairs.

Matthew had promised faithfully he would attend them next week for the Ball.

That week dragged for Matthew. Various lectures were held at the Camp and the younger officers asked many questions, about a variety of subjects.

He always found his mind wandering back to that tantalising image of Isobel in that white filmy gown and wondered what had come over him!?

Eventually he found himself getting ready for the Ball, having polished everything on his uniform to perfection and his boots were so shiny you could actually see your face in them!

Even his good friend, Major John Hughes, was impressed.
"She really does mean a lot to you, doesn't she, Miss Isobel?"
"Oh, yes, John. I feel she is my match, made in Heaven. She has a rebellious streak, and knows her own mind, which I admire, but she can be impetuous, and I may have to deal with that in the longer term, but that is a while away. My heart pounds when I lay eyes upon her and I have a gift for her."

Matthew opened the drawer of his bureau and produced a silk lined case, in which nestled a string of pearls, which were apparently all the rage this year at society functions.

John whistled when he saw them.
"Well, Matthew, I'm sure they will make an impression!"

Matthew smiled and tucked the case into a pocket.

"I must be away, my friend. Wish me luck!"

John laughed and said:
"You won't need it - just enjoy yourselves, as I know you will!"

Isobel wasn’t sure how she made it through the following week as it all blurred together. She had to rise early every day, had her corset pulled a little tighter each morning and didn’t retire until much later than usual. She and the 3 other girls who would be presented at the debutante ball held a series of luncheons and afternoon tea’s. each continued about their normal activities, visiting poorer families, attending church each day and continuing with their schooling lessons. Isobel also had language, history, mathematics and science lectures on top of the usual English, embroidery and music.

By midweek the fatigue was clear upon her face and Isobel barely had time to think about the upcoming ball let alone her new (she hoped) suitor. Still he was the last thing on her mind before she fell asleep at night and the first thing she thought of when she rose the next morning, a smile adorning her full lips.

Quietly, almost secretly Mrs Griffiths cleared as much of Isobel’s schedule as she possibly could for the day before the debutante ball. The evening before the final dress fitting she remarked how tired Isobel was looking “I know Mama, I’m just so busy with the extra duties I must do before the debutantes ball.” Her whole body seemed to wilt as she began to list the things she needed to do. Mrs Griffiths smiled. “Then my dear, it is a good thing I have rearranged things. You need to sleep otherwise you will not be at your best for Colonel James now will you?” Isobel smiled coyly at the mention of his name and her skin flushed a delicate pink “No Mama…..thank you”

“You are welcome my dear” Mrs Griffiths replied. “Now. We have finished eating and your father and I have much to discuss. Go straight up to bed and I will have one of the maids wake you in time for the dress fitting on the morrow. Apart from that visit, I want you in bed resting the whole time”
Isobel’s head dropped and she nodded obediently. “Yes Mama, thank you” and she excused herself from the table, heading upstairs wondering what her parents might be discussing.

Her parents moved from the large, draughty dining room to the cosy parlour. Mrs Griffiths took out her embroidery, an almost finished delicate white lace handkerchief that she intended to give to Isobel on the night of the ball. Turning to her husband she bowed her head and appeared to remark casually “I wonder, my dear, if you had given any thought to allowing Colonel James to court our daughter?”

Mr Griffiths smiled benevolently at his wife “Now now my dear, that is hardly a matter for you to worry your pretty little head about is it hmmmm?” and he chuckled. Mrs Griffiths’ head snapped up and she scowled at her husband “George! I would thank you not to speak to me like I am a child. I asked you a question and I expect a civilised answer!”
Mr Griffiths blustered slightly and his ruddy cheeks grew even redder. “well my dear you know I didn’t mean that, nothing of the sort.” He cleared his throat and hummed a moment. “I thought we should see how the girl’s ball goes first? He has expressed an interest in Isobel, and you say she seems very taken with him. I would not be averse to the idea. What do you think dear?” he asked, hoping he had calmed the waters with his wife slightly. Mrs Griffiths had settled back in her chair and picked up her sewing again “I think that sounds like a fine idea darling” and the two settled back into a companionable silence for most of the remainder of the night.

The following day Isobel rose late, breakfasted well and mother and daughter visited the dressmakers for the final time. Her dress fitted perfectly and there were no real adjustments to be made this time. Arrangements were made for the dress to be starched and delivered to the house. One of the seamstresses would attend at 3.30 the following day to make sure there were no last minute problems to take care of. Taking an early afternoon walk through the park on the way home was a wonderful escape for Isobel as mother and daughter discussed plans for the future. Arriving home Isobel was sent once more to her room where she spent the rest of the day reading and dozing on her day bed.

The following morning after a good sleep and a late breakfast Isobel had a bath of hot water prepared and her mother added rose petals and a dash of rose oil to make it special. She sank into the hot water with a shiver as her thoughts were overwhelmed with thoughts of Colonel James and she blushed as Sally washed her hair and her thoughts strayed to how it might feel if he kissed her that night!

A light lunch was sent up at around 1pm and Isobel ate dreamily as the maids set her hair to make it curl. By 3 Isobel was a bundle of nerves. The ball was due to start at 5, and Colonel James was due to arrive at 4.30. Clothes were laid out and Isobel began to dress, her waist cinched in tighter than ever before. Once in her underclothes Isobel had to wait for the seamstress to arrive before slipping into the while silk dress. It fitted her like a second skin and her hair was dressed, light makeup and scent applied and long gloves applied to her slender arms.

A nervous calm had descended over Isobel while she waited for her mother to come and tell her of Colonel James’ arrival. She heard the knock at the door and rose from her seat, straightening her hair and skirts. Her mother gasped as she entered the room. “You look beautiful my dear. It’s time” The two ladies began to make their way to the hall. Isobel paused at the top of the stairs, just behind a corner and gazed at her partner for the night, looking astonishing in his dress uniform.

When her mother had descended she emerged, pausing at the top of the stairs before slowly progressing down the sweeping staircase. She reached the bottom, turned and gave her father a small curtsey, as was proper. She covered the distance between her and Colonel James and dipped him a low curtsey, her skirts billowing around her. The top of her dress was cut low across her shoulders and her bosom heaved, spilling slightly from the neckline as she bowed her head before rising smoothly and turning to collect her red velvet cloak. Wrapping it around her shoulders she turned back to him with a nervous smile and offered him her hand.

Matthew received the runner who had arrived at his Officer's Quarters, out of breath and holding a handwritten note, which he handed over, before he was dismissed to enable him to catch his breath.

The note was addressed to 'Lt. Col. M. James, 1Bn. Coldstream Guards', in a woman's hand.

He opened it and read:
'Dear Lt. Col. James, as promised, I have despatched a coach to collect you and bring you to the House. I eagerly await your arrival.
Sincerely,
Miss Isobel Griffiths'

Matthew stood and stepped into his parade boots, buckling them securely, and checking their shine one last time.

He stood before the mirror and made sure his hair was brushed, He buttoned his tunic, and made sure his uniform was spotless and all the buttons properly brassed & polished.
His ceremonial sword and scabbard were shiny, and when he slid the sword out to check it and slid it home again with a solid 'click' he smiled to himself.

He placed his Officer's cap upon his head and then John walked in.
"You're off, then, Matthew?"
"Yes, John. This should be an evening to remember! I have been looking forward to it for so long it seems!"

"I know you have Matthew - don't forget the pearls!"
"God bless you, John, I knew I was forgetting something inportant." He opened his bedside drawer and retrieved the presentation case with the string of pearls inside and slipped it into his inside jacket pocket.

John had hastily pulled on his boots an a jacket and said "I'll walk you out, my friend."

Together they strode out of the Apartment block and across the yard, towards the main gate, where there was indeed, a coach with a driver, who was chatting to the sentry, who stood rigidly to attention when he saw the two officers approaching.

"Good Evenin' Colonel. The driver was just tellin' me you are escortin' Miss Isobel Griffiths, daughter of the owner of the Griffiths Butcheries Company to the Debutantes' Ball. "
Matthew smiled, as John nudged him playfully, and he replied "That's right, Corporal. I hope to have an enjoyable evening."

The Corporal smiled and replied "I'm sure you will, Sir. I hear she is a vision to behold, Miss Griffiths."

Matthew and John smiled and as Matthew climbed aboard and responded with:
"That she is Corporal. Tonight I plan to ask her accept me as a suitor, I would court her, if her parents would allow it."

"Good for you Sir. Enjoy your evening." The Corporal saluted and so did John, before the driver looked back and Matthew bade him to 'Drive on.'

He waved out of the window, as the coach pulled away, then settled back into the seat for the short journey across town.

Eventually the coach pulled up outside the Griffiths residence and the driver opened the door. Matthew climbed down and walked smartly to the front door, which opened by the family's butler as he reached it.

"Col. James, Sir. Please come in. Miss Isobel will be with you shortly." Matthew stepped inside and removed his cap.
Mr. Griffiths walked up and placed one hand upon Matthew's shoulder, and with his other, shook Matthew's hand, smiling. No words were necessary.

He was led through the hallway to the foot of the ornamental staircase, and just as he looked upwards, Mrs Griffiths descended the stairs.
"Good Evening Colonel James." She smiled, and turned, then looked upwards to the top of the stairs, and Matthew followed her gaze.

Miss Isobel stepped around the corner, into Matthew's view. He gasped, She was, indeed a vision of beauty.

Her white silk dress fitted her perfectly, with her tiny waist and heaving bosom; and the long gloves she wore made her hands and arms seem even more delicate.

She would certainly be the Belle of the Ball!

As was proper, she curseyed first to her Father, and then to Matthew, smiling as she did so. A maid handed her the red velvet cloak, which she draped across her shoulders.
She then offered Matthew her hand, which he gently took in his own and tentatively kissed it.

"Good Evening, Miss Isobel. I am speechless. You look absolutely divine!"
He handed his cap to the maid, and reached into his jacket pocket to retrieve the case of pearls.
"As a token of my esteem for you, Miss Isobel, please accept this gift."

He handed the case to her, and waited with bated breath, for her reaction.

Isobel smiled to herself as she heard Colonel James’s sharp intake of breath when he espied her at the stop of the stairs. She descended slowly, seeming to float along smoothly rather than walk.

She had to suppress a small giggle as he lifted her gloved hand and pressed a kiss to it through the fabric, she giving his hand a slight squeeze before he released it. She could see her parents smiling at each other as they watched them pair before them. Both were slightly awkward and smiled slightly foolishly at each other.

He handed her the case and she looked at the velvet presentation box curiously. Slowly opening the lid she gasped as she saw the delicate string beladen with pearls. One hand raised to her lips as she covered her mouth in surprise. “They’re beautiful Colonel James, you are too kind!”

Isobel skipped across the floor to her mother, brandishing the case “Look Mama aren't they wonderful! May I wear them tonight?” Her eyes pleaded with her parents even as they looked at each other and both gave a small nod. She smiled and gave each of them a quick hug before moving back to her partner. “Would you put them on for me please?”. Isobel held the case before Matthew until he took the string.

When he had the pearls in his hand she turned slowly, her skirts rustling slightly and lifted her hair, easily lifting the mass of curls in one hand, baring the back of her neck to him while he clasped them around her slender throat “Thank You” she murmured as he finished and slowly released her hair. Isobel’s parent’s exchanged a look and a small smile. It seemed that their decision had been made.

Before they left Mrs and Mrs Griffiths called her over to deliver their own presents. Mr Griffiths gave a small box that contained a pair of pearl drop earrings and a delicate bracelet which she adorned herself with and kissed her father on her cheek. Mrs Griffiths handed over a beautiful linen handkerchief hand embroidered with her initials which Isobel tucked into the bosom of her dress.

Mr Griffiths cleared his throat then “Well then my dears” here he turned and inclined his head at his wife and daughter, “and friends” he indicated Colonel James “we had better leave, or we shall be late” He offered Mrs Griffiths, who took it gently, and Isobel moved to Matthew’s side as her parents walked across the hall and through the large front door to the outside where the two carriages were waiting.

Isobel and Matthew followed close behind but they took the first of the two carriages, her parents travelling behind to watch as the young people put their heads together, lost in conversations and each other. All too soon it seemed they arrived at the ball and made their way inside. They were relieved of outer garments at the door and the party split apart. Isobel’s parents moved to the left while Isobel and Colonel James moved to the right into separate ‘waiting’ rooms until the doors to the main ballroom were opened. There were many people attending the ball, it was an important social function, but only 4 girls were debuting this year and they stood out in the starched, bright white dresses.

Just as it seemed not one more person would fit into the room the doors to the ballroom opened and people streamed in on both sides. Isobel and her three friends hung back with their partners while the other attendee’s lined the walls of the ballroom. Isobel was to enter last and she waited nervously with Colonel James, her hand resting lightly on his arm and he could feel her trembling.

The four couples made their way into the large, now filled ballroom. Isobel carefully grasped the train of her dress in her left hand, tucked her hand into the crook of Colonel James’s arm once more and waited for the usher to announce them, at which point they made their way up the column made by the people on either side. Isobel heard a small sussuration shiver across the crowd as she entered with her partner, in full military dress and she lifted her head even higher, proud to be on his arm.

When they reached the centre of the room each girl dipped a low curtsey to her partner and they began a slow quadrille. As the music ended to be replaced by another, more jaunty tune the room clapped and the four debutantes curtseyed once more, first to their partner’s and then to their families before the ball really began. The room filled with laughter and talking as couples separated out and began to dance

Matthew was pleased that Isobel liked the pearls. He hadn't really considered that she wouldn't, but his relief was a weight lifted from his shoulders nonetheless.

He gazed into her eyes and saw nothing but happiness. Her naivete was refreshing, compared to the cynicism he usually encountered amongst his peers, when fighting at the front. He wanted this moment to go on forever.

As her parents reminded them they had to leave, his mind was focussed once more upon the evening ahead.

After all, this was actually for Isobel's benefit, as she was being presented at Court.

As they walked out to the waiting coaches together, Isobel slipped her arm into the crook of his, and as he guided her to the door and held his other arm out to steady her as she climbed in ahead of him she smiled widely and carefully boarded the coach.

He clambered deftly aboard after her and sat beside her. No words were necessary - he could see by the expression upon her face how excited she was. As the coaches pulled away, she rested her head against his, as they talked of what they expected the evening to bring.

After they arrioved at Cardiff Castle, they were ushered inside.
The cloakroom attendants were very prompt, and their outer garments were taken from them almost as soon as they were inside the inside the building. Her parents were separated from them, as the Debutantes, Escorts and guests were led into another room, and after a short wait, the doors were opened and a stream of people flowed into the Ballroom. The Debutantes and
Escorts hung back, as instructed, to allow the other attendees to form a Reception Committee.

As befitting his rank, Matthew being the senior Officer in attendance, acting as Escort, he was permitted to choose to enter last, with his charge, to allow her to make the grandest entrance, and that, she did!

The assembled crowd were in awe of Isobel's beauty as the Usher announced them both:
"Miss Isobel Griffiths & her Escort, Leftenant Colonel Matthew James, First Batallion, Coldstream Guards."

Isobel wondered why she was instructed to walk on Matthew's left side, when all the other girls had walked on their escort's right, but this became apparent once they had entered the Ballroom and the doors closed behind them.

Sat opposite them was the Prince of Wales, Prince Edward (Later Edward VII) as the senior Royal personage present. As is customary in the prescence of Royalty, Matthew was required to salute, to demonstrate his deference and respect to their station in society.

As Isobel had to take both hands to lift her skirts in order to curtsey, Matthew took two steps to the side, and standing smartly to attention, with his heels
clicking on the smooth wooden floor, the sound resounded throughout the room.
He then drew his sword, and held it upright by his side, before drawing his hand inwards so the flat of the upright blade almost touched his nose.
After a short pause, he returned his sword to his side and then replaced it within its scabbard.
Now Isobel understood, that she stood on Matthew's off-side, to avoid any potential accidents with his sword!

As they walked, together again, to the centre of the room, the orchestra started playing a slow quadrille, to which all the couples danced, watched by the assembled crowd.
As the music ended to be replaced by another, more jaunty tune the room clapped and the four debutantes curtseyed once more, first to their partners and then to their families before the ball really began. The room filled with laughter and talking as the other couples separated out and began to dance.

They were then approached by the Lord Chamberlain, who wanted to present Isobel formally to the Prince. As they walked forward and the Lord Chamberlain announced them, the Prince, also attired in the uniform of a
Guards Officer, stood and as Matthew saluted, this time with his hand, the Price returned his salute.
The Prince shook Isobel's hand first, saying:
"Miss Griffiths, a pleasure to meet you. My Mother wishes she could be here to meet you in person, but other Royal business to which she must attend needs her personal attention, so you're stuck with me, I'm afraid!" His disarming smile, showed that he was enjoying the experience, and hoped that he was putting her at ease.
He continued "Please convey my personal thanks to your Father, for his wares have adorned my table on many occasions and helped me entertain many influential guests."
Matthew looked at Isobel then, who was blushing with pride. She could simply nod her acceptance of his instruction.
Then the Prince turned to Matthew.
"Colonel James, I am pleased to meet a true soldier. I am permitted to wear this uniform to carry out matters of state, not as a badge of honour, as you do. I am not at liberty to go to war. You have my gratitude and that of my entire family for your service to your country."

Matthew replied "Your Highness, My Prince, the honour is mine. You have single-handedly injected more style into society than all the fashion houses in Great Britain. This inspires all young men who wish to dress well, to emulate you. I myself have just acquired a suit from Taylors of Savile Row, in your new style of checked patterned cloth."

The Prince smiled broadly and shook his hand.
"Colonel - It is a pleasure to meet a kindred spirit, a man who enjoys the simple pleasure of good tailoring. Perhaps we can talk later, if circumstances permit?
This evening is for the benefit of ladies such as Miss Isobel here, not us, although, if I may be so bold, if she were looking for a potential husband, she should just leave with you. You are obviously the best candidate here by a country mile! Besides, you look so good together."
He laughed then, a deep, chuckle which was quite infectious, and shaking Matthew's hand once more, and then bowing to Isobel, and shaking her hand, he was whisked away by the Lord Chamberlain.

Matthew turned to Isobel and said. "There you have it - husband material by Royal Approval!" He smiled at her, and she at him, although he felt emboldened by the Prince's declaration, he wondered if he had just worn
his heart too much on his sleeve?

As he escorted her back to the middle of the room, Isobel's parents intercepted them.
"Is everything alright? The Prince seemed to be talking to you both for quite a while!"
Matthew let Isobel reply, as her parents had asked the question.
"Oh Yes, Papa. Prince Edward asked me to convey his thanks to you,
for your wares adorn his table on many occasions." She beamed with pride, as did her Mother also.
Her Father chuckled then. "Excellent news! Maybe I can apply for a Royal Warrant, if he thinks so highly of me? I'll ask our MP to petition for it!"

Matthew then spoke. "I would like to congratulate Miss Isobel. Her beauty dazzled the Prince, and he said that we look so good together."

Mr. Griffiths laughed again.
"Did he now? Well, we shall talk of this later." He swapped a glance with his wife. He indicated they all rejoin the dance floor.

After a few more dances, a herald announced that dinner was about to be served, so everyone should take their seats at their table.
Isobel led Matthew to her table and joined her friends, who were now able to show their appreciation of both her beauty, in her white dress, and Matthew resplendent in his dress uniform.

As he looked around, he could see the other debutantes were enjoying their evenings in similar fashion.

After a delicious and sumptuous dinner, there followed more dancing, this time with the debutantes dancing with other young men, who wished to be considered as potential suitors.
As Matthew was required to dance with other young women, as part of the arrangement, several times, he looked across to see Isobel enjoying herself, but after a few seconds, her gaze would drift towards him once again, and one's eyes would catch the other, and they would smile.

Eventually, the evening came to a close, and with guests drifting away, the Herald called a formal close to the Ball.

A short speech of thanks by the Prince followed, and then people were invited to leave for their homes.

The nerves in Isobel’s stomach had begun the moment she espied the castle from the carriage. She hid it well at first though. There was no tremor in her voice and her hands were perfectly steady. She talked calmly with Matthew, terribly aware of where their bodies connected as they were sat on the carriage seat. They pulled up outside the grand building and Matthew alighted first and turned to hand Isobel down. She stepped lightly onto the wide pavement and smoothed her white silken skirts down with gloved hands.

Her parents arrived soon after Isobel and Matthew and quickly descended from their own seats, and both parties moved inside the castle, handing over wraps and cloaks. A quick hug and kiss on the cheek for both of her parents and Isobel parted from them for now. The guests, debutantes and escorts milled around, talking quietly until the usher announced the beginning of the festivities. Isobel had noticed the usher speaking quietly with Matthew not long after they entered the room and wondered what they spoke of but put it out of her mind, preferring to chatter with her friends, trying to forget the nerves building inside of her.

The usher positioned each couple and Isobel frowned as he put her on Matthew’s left, when all the other girls walked on their escort’s right side. As the doors opened she turned, dipping down to straighten the train of fabric behind her, and standing upright once more, smoothed down her skirts. Isobel tucked her hand into the crook of Matthew’s arm, her hand gripping his slightly tighter than before and he could feel the slight tremor running through her body, the only sign of her nerves. As they began to move forwards she shook back her hair, it all falling perfectly into place.

They processed into the opulent ballroom and Isobel lifted her chin high, displaying the fine string of pearls around her neck and swallowed hard as she saw the prince. She carefully disentangled her hand from Matthew’s arm as they reached the slight dais where a grand chair had been placed and in which sat the heir to the throne. Grasping her skirts and pulling them out slightly she smoothly dipped to the floor, almost kneeling she curtseyed so low. Out of the corner of her eye she saw a flash of silver and a smooth swish of metal being withdrawn and had to suppress a gasp and shiver as Matthew drew his sword. She understood now why she had been positioned differently to the other girls. It had definitely meant that she made the grandest entrance as she heard a collective gasp and flurry of movement as the ladies nearest Matthew took an involuntary step backwards.

After a few moments Isobel rose as smoothly as she had dipped, her control perfect as she straightened up unwaveringly, her balance not shifting as was common with such a low, prolonged curtsey. She took Matthew’s arm again and they moved into the centre of the room to dance. The quadrille was a slow even dance that was not physically demanding, but laced as tightly as she was, Isobel was breathing harder and her cheeks had flushed by the end of the dance. She thought that was the ‘worst’ part of the evening over with and she visibly relaxed as the next dance started.

Isobel saw the Lord Chamberlain approaching as her heart skipped a beat, wondering what on earth he wanted. Nodding in acknowledgement and assent (not that she would turn down a chance to meet royalty!) she moved with Matthew over to the prince, she nervously smoothing her skirts and bodice. As her partner saluted again, Isobel stood beside him and as the prince offered her his hand, she carefully took it, her touch feather light and even as he shook it she dipped another curtsey, this one not quite as low as her previous one but respectful nonetheless.

The prince spoke to her, Isobel’s heart was in her throat and she didn’t think she would be able to speak for fear of disgracing herself. She managed to nod, even though she was blushing with pride and felt like her face was on fire. “Yes Your Majesty” she managed to murmur before he turned to Matthew and the two spoke comfortably together about their duty, and of all things, fashion! Isobel took this as an opportunity to calm herself and surreptitiously examined the prince from under her lashes.

Suddenly he turned back to her and complimented the way she and Matthew looked together. Blushing she dropped her head briefly then lifting it again with a smile on her face she boldly replied to him “Perhaps you should tell my parents that Your Majesty!” He laughed, shook Matthew's hand and she dipped a low curtsey as he bowed to her and was hurried away by the Lord Chamberlain.

She laughed softly at Matthew’s response and lifted her gaze to his. “Its not me you have to convince of that……Matthew” It was the first time she had used his given name and it seemed to roll easily off her tongue. They moved back into the centre of the room, she leaning against him slightly for support “I’m not sure I can take much more excitement tonight” she murmured as he parents approached and she could see their faces were full of questions.
"Is everything alright? The Prince seemed to be talking to you both for quite a while!"

Isobel smiled "Oh Yes, Papa. Prince Edward asked me to convey his thanks to you, for your wares adorn his table on many occasions." Her Father chuckled then. "Excellent news! Maybe I can apply for a Royal Warrant, if he thinks so highly of me? I'll ask our MP to petition for it!"
Isobel answered him “Oh Papa, you should, think of what it would do for your reputation! You could expand the business even more!” She was clearly excited at the prospect.

She looked at Matthew as he spoke "I would like to congratulate Miss Isobel. Her beauty dazzled the Prince, and he said that we look so good together." She blushed and gently inclined her head “Thank you. Papa, the Prince also said that Matthew would make a good husband” and she snapped her mouth shut after she had spoken, wondering how her parents would react to the statement, and the use of Colonel James’s first name.

Mr. Griffiths laughed again."Did he now? Well, we shall talk of this later." He swapped a glance with his wife. He indicated they all rejoin the dance floor.

It appeared that Mr Griffiths was unfazed by Isobel’s statement and the two couples returned to the dance floor, whirling and spinning in the patterns of the quadrilles, waltzes and jigs. Isobel lost herself in the moment, she not noticing the other couples moving around them, Matthew held her completely enthralled. She couldn’t speak much, the speed of the dances and the tightness of her corset took her breath away but she didn’t mind, she was enjoying herself too much. She became almost sad when the ushers announced it was time for dinner.

They moved to their tables and with a low scrape of chairs everyone was seated. Isobel ate delicately, and was very glad of the small portions, as the food was delicious but she couldn’t eat very much. After the meal, dancing resumed, although at a much slower pace. Isobel frowned slightly as Matthew had to depart to dance with the other girls, and both she and him were in high demand, with a long line of suitors waiting to dance with them.

Isobel fixed a smile on her face and danced well with each of her partners but Colonel James still held her attention. She glanced his way each time she could, a little spark of jealously developing each time she saw him dancing with another girl.

She was glad when the herald called an end to the music but it was a bittersweet ending. She was absolutely exhausted and knew she would sleep well that night, but it would mean saying goodnight to Matthew, and she really didn’t want to do that. Everyone gathered to listen to the Prince’s closing speech, giving him a round of applause as he finished. He left the hall first and there was a susurration through the crowds as everyone bowed or curtseyed low. The guests then began to leave, the debutantes, their escorts and families lingering to formally say goodbye to everyone. The hall gradually emptied and Isobel, Matthew and her parents waited a little longer for the crowds at the cloakroom to abate before dipping a curtsey to the other families, and collecting their cloaks.

Wrapping herself tightly against the chill outside, Isobel stifled a yawn and the group left the castle and entered the waiting carriages. She was handed up and as soon as Matthew entered and settled beside her she inched closer to his warmth, resting her head on his shoulder and almost falling asleep from the comfortable position and the gentle rocking of the carriage.

Matthew had to rouse her when they arrived at the house to dismount and enter her home. She winced as she stood and stepped down to the pavement, the soles of her feet burning from all the dancing she had done. It had been a successful night though, and she wouldn’t change it for the world.

Entering the house, she noticed it was very late, past midnight, and the servants had dimmed the lights to a gentle glow. Mr and Mrs Griffiths had instructed the maids to go to bed and not wait up for them, the family could undress themselves that night. Isobel took her own cloak off then moved to take that of her parents as well when they entered, she then moving to a closet near the door and hanging them carefully up.

She heard her parents talking with Matthew behind her but she was so tired that she couldn’t quite hear what was said. Moving back over she stood close to Matthew and sighed softly, not wanting to say goodnight. Then her father looked to her mother and spoke “Matthew, it is very late, if you would like to sleep here tonight then you are most welcome, we have had a guest room prepared in case, or one of the carriages is waiting outside to take you home now. I leave the choice in your hands”

Matthew had really enjoyed his time with Isobel at the Debutante's Ball.
He was pleased to make the Prince of Wales' acquaintance.
He was most pleased that the Prince told them that they looked good together, and Matthew knew he had taken the most beautiful woman on his arm. Isobel was everything he could want in a wife - smart, pretty, hard-working.

As she rested against him in the carriage on the way back to her house, Matthew could not recall a time when he had been happier. They hardly spoke, other than to tell leach other how much they had enjoyed the evening.
No other words were needed, they had experienced the evening together and their mutual enjoyment of the whole event was plain for everyone to see.

When Mr. Griffiths offered Matthew the guest bedroom for the night, he was most grateful.
He had enjoyed the bonhomie of the evening and felt a little the worse for fatigue. He still hadn't got used to the fact he was healing from his war wounds. He gladly accepted his offer.

Mr. Griffiths himself escorted Matthew to the guest bedroom and made sure he was comfortable, before bidding him a good night and promising to send Isobel to fetch him for Breakfast. Matthew was surprised, but thought it prudent not to query the point - perhaps it had been a slip of the tongue?

Matthew undressed to his underwear and carefully hung his uniform in the wardrobe made available to him.

He found the bedpan, and slid it back under the bed, for when it may be needed later.

He pulled the blankets back and slid beneath them, feeling the cool, smooth sheets beneath him, and the call of sleep was too much to resist.

As he faded into slumber, the image of Isobel in that filmy white gown resurfaced in his mind. This time, however, she was bound, by wrists and ankles to a square frame, and the top part of her gown, was dragged by an ethereal breeze, across her breasts, and the gauzy
material served to highlight, rather than hide her womanly form.

"She seemed to be inciting him to 'Take me, Matthew - make me yours!'

He smiled as he fell over the precipice into a deep sleep, which did not break until morning, when a knock was heard at his door and a woman's voice called softly."Colonel James?"
Matthew wearily opened his eyes, and slitted them as the already bright sunlight streamed through the curtains, and reminded him that he had drunk a few glasses of brandy last night. He hadn't abused the hospitality, but hadn't drunk any water afterward to lessen the alcohol's dehydrating effects.

He held a hand over his eyes as he replied "Yes? Come in."

Isobel was utterly exhausted and could barely put one foot in front of the other to ascend the stairs to her room. It had been a long night, and full of heightened emotions, she had been laced tighter than ever before and there had been a busy fortnight’s build up to the ball. Her fingers fumbled with her buttons and laces and she knelt to pick up the dress from where it pooled on the floor with a groan. Settling for draping the fabric over a chair, Isobel blearily washed her face and body, donned her nightgown and fell into the soft comfort of her bed. She curled herself up into a little ball, and slept the deep sleep of the hard worked.

Her parents had equipped the guest room well, knowing that he guardsman might take up their offer. The fire had been built up and a warming pan made available if he wished it. A nightgown lay atop the warm covers and an ewer of water, along with a crystal glass sat on a table. Crisp, clean linen sheets had been put on the bed only a few hours before the family arrived home. As he slid between their coolness a faint aroma of soap wafted under his nose.

Mr &Mrs Griffiths had intended to allow Isobel to wake Matthew the following morning but as the sun grew higher neither stirred. Mrs Griffiths went to check on her daughter and found her in a deep sleep and decided not to wake her, instead sending one of the other girls to wake Matthew. After all, this would be an opportunity to discuss with him the possibility of him courting Isobel.

So it was Sally who knocked on the young man’s door, quietly calling his name and waiting for his consent to enter. She slipped inside the door and dipped a quick curtsey, her head and eyes lowered to preserve his modesty “Please Sir, Mr and Mrs Griffiths would like you to join them for breakfast in the Parlour. They regretfully inform you that Miss Isobel is still asleep and they do not wish to wake her” She dipped another curtsey and slipped out of the room, leaving Matthew to get dressed. When he rose he would find that one of the maids had entered while he was sleeping and brushed and freshened his uniform up. It now hung on the front of the wardrobe, each of its buttons gleaming brightly in the sunlight. On the chair lay a simple suit and shirt, if he wished to dress more comfortably and informally. The suit was an old one belonging to Mr Griffiths and was a little large for Matthew but not hugely so.

Downstairs a light but filling breakfast had been laid out, a wide variety of foods and juices being made available. Mr and Mrs Griffiths sat quietly eating while they awaited Matthew’s appearance. When he did they both bid him good morning and spoke cordially with him while he ate.

When he had finished Mr Griffiths rose and cleared his throat “Now Matthew, I think it is high time we speak of your intentions towards my daughter. I believe that you wish to, if she is amenable, take her hand correct?”

“Yes Sir, I would” answered Matthew, he himself rising from his chair proudly, yet remaining respectful.

“Well, my wife and I have given this much thought and discussion” here he paused and looked to Mrs Griffiths who gave him an impatient nod “If Isobel wishes it, we are quite happy for you to court her.” Mrs Griffiths spoke then “I think it is clear that she has feelings for you, and I hope that you have some for her.” Mr Griffiths nodded his agreement with that statement “I am trusting my daughter to you Colonel James. I hope that you will not let me down”

Upstairs Isobel had awoken and slowly gotten dressed, wincing as she slid her feet into shoes and having Sally lace her looser than normal. She descended the stairs, hearing the low rumble of voices in the parlour and made her way into the room, pushing open the door and moving to a free chair where she sat a little stiffly, a murmured “Good morning Mama, Papa. Good morning…..Matthew” coming from her direction. She selected some foods and began to break her fast, stifling a yawn – she was still very tired and would need a day or two to fully recover

Matthew had roused, when Sally had knoced on the guest room door and delivered her message, that Mr. & Mrs. Griffiths had invited him to breakfast with them.

He donned the suit which Mr. Griffiths had thoughtfully provided and decended the stairs and walked to the Parlour, where he found his hosts, already eating.
They invited him to join them and they all enjoyed cordial conversation.

Isobel was nowhere to be seen, and due to her being very tired, they had allowed her to sleep in, even later than their guest. This was explained to Matthew in due course.

Then, when he had finished Mr Griffiths rose and cleared his throat “Now Matthew, I think it is high time we speak of your intentions towards my daughter. I believe that you wish to, if she is amenable, take her hand correct?”

“Yes Sir, I would” answered Matthew, he himself rising from his chair proudly, yet remaining respectful.

“Well, my wife and I have given this much thought and discussion” here he paused and looked to Mrs Griffiths who gave him an impatient nod “If Isobel wishes it, we are quite happy for you to court her.” Mrs Griffiths spoke then “I think it is clear that she has feelings
for you, and I hope that you have some for her.” Mr Griffiths nodded his agreement with that statement “I am trusting my daughter to you Colonel James. I hope that you will not let me down”.
Upstairs Isobel had awoken and slowly gotten dressed, wincing as she slid her feet into shoes and having Sally lace her looser than normal. She descended the stairs, hearing the low rumble of voices in the parlour and made her way into the room, pushing open the door
and moving to a free chair where she went to sita little stiffly, a murmured “Good morning Mama, Papa. Good morning…..Matthew” coming from her direction. She selected some foods and began to break her fast, stifling a yawn.

Matthew was amused at her conduct, but very happy that she had called him 'Matthew'. It was the first time she had done so. Her parents hadn't quailed at it, either.
He wanted to propose to her privately, to allow her the joy of anouncing the news to her parents. That said, he was fairly sure she would accept, but until he asked, he wouldn't know for sure!

Matthew stood, as Isobel walked to her chair and he gallantly slid it back from the table and then back under her as she sat.

As she started to select a few morsels to eat, Matthew poured himself another cup of tea. It was very good, and as a soldier he appreciated quality tea!

He turned to Isobel and asked:
"Isobel - I'd like to ask you to accompany me around the Park again this afternoon, with your parents, of course!" He added quickly, not wanting to exclude them.

"Perhaps we could lunch at the Guards' Club again, beforehand?"

He looked sideways at Mr. Griffiths, who smiled and said nothing. However, Matthew thought it would be a popular choice, for a way to spend a Sunday.

He looked at Isobel, wondering what she'd choose to do.

"Yes, the Park would be nice!" Isobel replied, smiling, but I don't know about the Guards' Club...I don't know what I would wear!"

She looked over at her Father for guidance and he in turn looked to Mrs. Griffiths.

Meanwhile, Matthew laughed light-heartedly, then said:
"Isobel - you could wear a sack-cloth and still look wonderful, I'm sure!"

She blushed and then smiled, before saying " Well, I would still need to get ready for lunch!"

Mrs. Griffiths smiled and then offered:
"We could lunch here. Cook already has enough provisions and we were going to eat here
anyway - you'd be welcome to stay, Matthew, if you'd like?"

Matthew smiled and answered "I gratefully accept your invitation, but I have nothing suitable to wear."

Mr. Griffiths chuckled and then responded:
"Matthew - I think I can loan you a couple of changes of clothes without any trouble, unless you need to get back to Camp?"

Matthew laughed with him.
"Well, then Sir, I do not need to return to Camp, so I am happy to remain as your guest for the day!"

He smiled over at Isobel, who beamed a smile back at him.

Isobel gave Matthew a slightly wan, tired smile and inclined her head a little in thanks as he slid the chair from beneath the table, waited for her to sit and slid it smoothly back in again. The conversation resumed as she selected her breakfast. She began to eat daintily in small mouthfuls, knowing that she shouldn’t eat too much now, she was very late up and lunch would be served before too long. The frantic rush of the last few weeks had left little time for trivialities such as eating and Isobel didn’t want to overdo it straight away. Slowly she sipped at a glass of fresh juice before her, she not enjoying hot drinks and tea’s that much. She would drink them of course, but more out of courtesy than desire. In her own home she was much more relaxed.

Matthew turned to her and asked her to accompany him around the park that afternoon. "Yes, the Park would be nice!" Isobel replied, smiling, "but I don't know about the Guards' Club...I don't know what I would wear!" She gave a little laugh and clarified “besides, I’m not sure my feet would hold me up attending the Guards club as well as a walk around the Park. I might need the carriage to take me there as it is” she said with a small grimace as she pressed her tender soles to the floor “I think I did too much dancing last night” she added ruefully.

She turned to her father, gauging his reaction to the sudden offer of a jaunt in the park, and he turned to Mrs Griffiths as Matthew spoke again with a light hearted laugh."Isobel - you could wear a sack-cloth and still look wonderful, I'm sure!" he said

She dipped her head, her hands folding in her lap and squeezing tight together as she struggled to contain her excitement and hide the blush that coloured her cheeks. " Well, I would still need to get ready for lunch!"She countered with a laugh of her own.

Isobel nodded as her mother spoke “yes and those provisions, and Cook’s time spent preparing a meal would be a waste if we dined at the guards club now”. She sat quietly as she waited for his reply to the invitation for lunch.

When he accepted she positively squirmed in excitement, noticing her mother glancing her way she ducked her head once more and reached for her glass with one hand while the other smoothed down the fabric of her skirt. Matthew smiled at her and she beamed a smile back at him, her eyes sparking and twinkling in the sunlight that streamed through the window. He could see the excitement and pleasure that set her body almost a quiver, reflected in her eyes.

Finishing her breakfast, the whole family moved into the comfortable chairs at the other end of the room, her parent’s taking up their usual arm chairs while Matthew and Isobel occupied a chaise longue. Her hands couldn’t stay still and it wasn’t long before she retrieved her work basket from beside the fireplace, nestling it securely in her lap she pulled out a shirt she had been sewing for her charity work. She settled to the task in hand while the group chatted amiably, her father enquiring about Matthew’s service and past, his family and friends, Mrs Griffiths and Isobel speaking quietly about their plans for the week.

After Isobel accepted Matthew’s invitation to go around the Park once more, he felt relieved, and also very pleased.
Isobel was still obviously exhausted after the Debutantes’ Ball the night before, but as they chatted over Coffee after breakfast, with her parents, it was clear that the night had been an outstanding success.
As they chatted both Isobel and her mother were working on needlework items, for their charity work, in order to provide something for the under-privileged.

As the morning wore on, and the ladies retired to meet with some of their fellow charity workers, Mr. Griffiths and Matthew took a walk around the garden, and chatted. Mr.Griffiths had really taken a shine to Matthew, and still seemed, not quite suspicious, but a little perturbed as to why this slightly older man had taken a fancy to his daughter.
Matthew met his doubt head-on, saying that yes, whilst he was slightly older than Isobel, he did not feel his age made their relationship inappropriate. He had never been married, as his career in the Army had made that infeasible until now, in his eyes. He admitted that to start with he had doubts himself, but he soon found that his heart yearned to be in her company and whenever he was with her, he felt younger and more vibrant than he had ever felt in his life.
He complimented Mr. Griffiths, on both his success as a businessman, and his also his wonderful Wife, whom he could clearly see doted on their daughter. Matthew then admitted that he would seek her hand in marriage, as it wasn’t so much a question of him living the rest of his life with her, but rather, could he face the rest of his life without her?

As they returned to the Parlour, for pre-dinner drinks, the ladies had already returned and were sat awaiting the men’s arrival. As they sat talking over yet more memories of the previous evening, Cook interrupted them to announce that lunch was ready to be served.
Lunch was a very pleasant, relaxed affair, with sumptuous food & fine wine. The conversation flowed as easily as the wine, although everyone took care not to indulge too much, as it might spoil their walk around the Park after Lunch.
Once dessert had been enjoyed, and a small cup of coffee drunk just to warm their insides before the ventured outside, to the waiting carriages; as it was deemed that Isobel’s feet were in too delicate a condition to stand up to all the walking necessary if they walked from the House to the Park.
It was only a short ride, perhaps a couple of minutes, with Isobel and Matthew in the first coach and her parents following in the second. Once they had arrived, Matthew help Isobel down from the step, onto the gravel footpath, and as her parents arrived, the younger couple waved to them, and started to walk on, with Mr. & Mrs. Griffiths following a discrete distance behind.

Isobel was limping slightly, but put a brave face on it, as she obviously wanted to spend more time in Matthew’s company and if a walk was the best way, then so be it. They chatted about anything and everything, and then Matthew paused and suggested they sit down upon an ornate bench overlooking the Lake, with swans and ducks swimming across it.

As they had walked almost half way round, Matthew used the bench as pretext to allow her to rest her weary feet, and as Isobel leant back slightly for a second, and allowed the sunlight to play across her face, he thought she looked absolutely radiant!
He leant in close and whispered in her ear:
“Isobel, I would like to kiss you. Will you permit me?”

Isobel spent most of the day in a haze, going about her business efficiently but not really paying attention to what she was doing. She went visiting with her mother but only with bad grace. Anyone who knew her well would be able to see the fatigue and apathy that infected her being on what she felt were mundane, inessential tasks when all Isobel wanted was to be curled up at home on a chaise longue, or in her bed with a book (and she would tell no one else this – close to Colonel James). To those who were mere acquaintances, or friends of necessity, she appeared to be full of life. A perfect smile plastered onto her pretty face and a spring in her step, with a hint of tiredness (which was, considering the debutantes ball, to be expected).

Returning to the house in time for the plain but filling lunch that the cook had prepared, Isobel sighed in relief as she sank into her chair. Back in Colonel James’ presence she perked up slightly, becoming more naturally animated and talkative. She could tell that her father and Matthew had been talking at length, and that they had gotten on well. The two men had an air of familiarity between them, of companionship and seemed to be comfortable together, which Isobel realised, relieved her for some reason.

The family retired once more to the parlour for a post-meal coffee. Isobel declined the strong drink, opting instead for a hot milk to warm her bones. She did not want to be up for hours that night, wanting nothing more than to slip into the warmth and comfort of her down filled quilt and sleep deeply and dreamlessly.

Before long, they all left the house, in the same manner as the night before, and proceeded to the park. Matthew gallantly handed Isobel down, and she winced as the gravel path bit into the soft, sore soles of her feet. She tucked her arm into Matthew’s leaning on him more heavily than she would have normally and doing her best to disguise the limp that entered her step. They moved around the footpaths at a sedate pace, the gentle movement becoming less painful to Isobel’s feet, but still she was grateful when Matthew led them to a bench and she sank carefully down onto it and lifted her feet from the ground under the cover of her voluminous skirts.

She leant backwards and rested against the upright of the bench, letting out a little sigh of contentment and lifting up her face to the late afternoon sunshine, closing her eyes as it encompassed her. She relaxed, feeling Matthew’s presence beside her, listening to the rustle of leaves, the gentle chirp of the birds around them and the low hum of conversations as people walked along the secluded pathways of the park.

Suddenly she felt lips near her ear, breath on her cheek and she gasped, a shiver running through her as Matthew came this close and spoke suddenly, breaking her reverie “Isobel, I would like to kiss you. Will you permit me?” Matthew asked and Isobel turned to him, her eyes wide and she exclaimed “Colonel James! You know as well as I that is most inappropriate! And in such a public place!” Her cheeks flushed red and she turned to face the path again, casting a quick glance around to see if her parents were watching.
She saw them, three benches down, lost in their own conversation and she gave a curt nod “Yes Matthew you may kiss my cheek, bearing in mind we are in public and we are not even……betrothed” her voice trembled slightly and dropped to barely a whisper as she spoke those words

Matthew smiled when Isobel stated they were not yet betrothed. He had known she would mention this point, as he knew it would be foremost in her mind as a barrier to them becoming intimate together.

He had also looked round and checked that Mr. and Mrs. Griffiths were not looking in their direction, before he asked Isobel her permission to kiss her.

He had not intended to startle her, by whispering in her ear, he just wanted to be discreet. As she gave her assent, he rested his lips lightly upon her cheek and ever so gently kissed her.

He felt his heart rate quicken and in that moment, reached down and held her small hand in his. He then sat up straight and continued talking to give the impression to any onlookers that nothing had happened.

Her beauty really was startling. He had known many women, a few older than Isobel, but none had ever had this effect on him before.

As they sat their side by side, holding hands and gazing out across the pond, Matthew gathered his nerve for what he was about to do. He reached into his jacket pocket, and finding the velvet covered box within, he knew it was time.

As they were still holding hands, he was able to bring Isobel’s to his lips, and gently kissed it, before sliding off the bench onto bended knee.

“My darling Isobel, I have been wondering what my life would be like in the future and cannot bear to face that future without you in it beside me. My heart soars like a swallow on the wind, whenever we are together. When we are apart I feel so alone. It feels to me as if we were meant to be together, that you are the missing part of me that makes me the whole person I feel I should be.”

At this point, Matthew choked, he not being used to think such emotion. He then continued:

“That is why, my darling, I ask you to become my Wife. Will you do me such an honour?”

He stayed on bended knee, and looked up into her eyes for a hint of what the answer might be.

Isobel wasn’t exactly startled, it was more that she was unaccustomed to having someone of the opposite sex so close to her. Even at dances and parties, there were certain rules that everyone had to follow and that included how close it was appropriate for a man to be, and Colonel James was crossing that line very slightly. Isobel could have caused a scene and moved away, but if she was truthful she enjoyed being this close to the man who had stolen her heart.

His lips lightly made contact with the soft warm skin of her cheek, and Isobel fought to control a flush. The next thing she knew, he was taking her small hand in his much larger one. Her gloved appendage nestled quite comfortably there but he could feel the quiver of her body beneath the layers of fabric, the tension that strummed through her small form.

Isobel could feel his eyes on her and her head dipped as a flush of pink coloured her cheeks. Raising her head again, she kept her eyes fixed on a point ahead as he shifted and fidgeted on the cold bench beside her.

Matthew lifted her hand once more to his lips, kissed it and slid off the bench, lowering to one knee on the cold pathway. Isobel’s breathing increased as she tried to make sense of what he was saying to her. She heard his words but her mind wasn’t exactly listening. her mind processed them without her realising it. Her thoughts were in a whirl, trying to make sense of the fact that there was a man, that she barely knew, but had made an instant connection with, kneeling before her and offering her marriage.

Isobel’s free hand fluttered to her abdomen, pressing against her body through the corset while she struggled to control her breathing “I am NOT going to faint” she told herself fiercely “Now Isobel, get a grip, he is waiting for an answer”

Her eyes were caught by his own glittering gaze, she seeing them sparkle with emotion and her gaze flicked up to the bench where her parents were sitting, seeing them both perched and watching them intently. She saw her mother smile, and pull out her handkerchief, dab at her eyes, and her father, who has risen from his seat, give the slightest nod of his head.

Isobel’s gaze returned to Matthew, kneeling before her, and she pulled her hand from his gently, and pulled off her gloves before returning it and lifting her other to rest ever so lightly on his cheek.

She nodded slowly. “Yes Matthew, Yes I will marry you” was her quiet reply and she took a breath as deep as she could within the confines of her lacing, straightening her neck and back proudly as her fingers gently caressed his skin

Matthew was happier than words could describe.
Isobel had accepted his proposal of marriage and he was so relieved!
He reached into his jacket pocket and produced the engagement ring he had bought for this day.
He hoped she would like it as much as he.
As he opened the small royal blue velvet-covered case, he proudly showed Isobel the token of his proposal:
A single-carat diamond nestled between two half-carat rubies, atop a slender band of white welsh gold, sat within a bed of lightly padded royal blue silk.

As he arose & sat back next to her and withdrew the ring, he pulled her left hand gently toward him, held her wedding ring finger tenderly, poised the ring at its tip & asked “May I?”

He looked deep into her eyes, and smiled a wide smile, that of a truly happy man.

Isobel smiled softly and spoke as he reached into the pocket of his coat “Did you think I would refuse….?” Her eyes locked with his for a moment until the small velvet covered ring box appeared between his fingers .

Her right hand pressed more firmly against her abdomen and her left eased down to rest on her lap as she tried to quell the shaking in her limbs as the beauty of the dainty circlet of silvery metal almost took her remaining breath away. The rubies twinkled and danced in the dappled light slanting through the trees as the white gold shone between Matthews’s large fingers.

A slight inclination of her head indicated that she was happy for him to slide the ring onto her finger, sure that it would be a perfect fit for her slender digits. She could feel the eyes of those passing upon them, but right then it didn’t matter.

He slid the cool metal onto her finger, settling it into place – as she had expected a perfect fit. His skin ‘accidentally’ brushed hers as he did so and a spark of electricity shot through her, settling as a strange heat at the base of her stomach and she found it hard not to squirm, such a pleasurable sensation it was.

Her eyes lifted again, to meet his gaze and she utter two words, so quietly that even he, so close to her, struggled to hear them “My Love”

Matthew too felt the spark as their skin touched. Isobel had bewitched him unlike any other woman he had ever known.

Isobel had called Matthew “My Love”.
His smile grew even wider and he stood and gently pulled her to her feet, gingerly holding his hand in hers, and gazing lovingly into her eyes.

“I would suggest, my love, that your parents have waited long enough and honoured us by being patient chaperones, but perhaps we should approach them and you could share the good news?”

He waited for her to tuck her arm into the crook of his elbow and he allowed her to set the pace, given her sore feet and seeing that she was to break the news to her parents.

Isobel tried to hide a wince as Matthew gently pulled her to her feet. She was still very sore and tired from the previous night’s gaieties and that was an ache that would take a few days to subside. She blushed and dipped her gaze as Matthew openly smiled and gazed into her eyes, taking a moment to replace her glove.

A slight shiver ran through her as he called her his love, even though she had named him the same just moments before. A soft laugh escaped her as he reminded her that her parents were waiting just steps away. “Yes I suppose we had. Though part of me wishes that we could keep this just for us for a while” she sighed softly “I expect there will be plenty of time for things between ourselves” her cheeks flamed as her mind flew to a picture of a house, a bed, a flash of ankle.

Obediently, she tucked her arm into his own and leaning slightly more heavily on him than before, began to step gingerly towards her waiting parents who were positively hungry for news and fidgeting in their seats.

As they newly engaged couple approached Isobel nodded at them slightly and began to tug her glove off once more to show the beautiful engagement ring to her parents.

They neared the bench where her parents were sat and Isobel’s mother clapped her gloved hands together and pulled her handkerchief from a pocket and wiped her tear filled eyes. Her father stood, cleared his throat and held his hand out to Matthew congratulating him ”well done my man. I hope you promise to look after her” giving his daughter a quick hug “She is very dear to me you know”

“Father!” Isobel exclaimed “Really. I am sure Colonel………Matthew will look after me quite wonderfully” she turned and gave her betrothed a slightly tired smile. Her voice quietened, sounds more like that of a child now “Can we go home now? I feel rather tired……..” she kept a tight hold of Matthew’s arm though, indicating she wished him to come too.

Matthew could sympathise with Isobel’s tender feet. Although he had not had to squeeze his feet into fashionable shoes, he still felt a little drained as they had bith enjoyed the evening to its fullest.

Matthew smiled at Isobel’s comment about ‘wanting to keep this moment for themselves’, but he also saw the necessity of announcing their engagement to her parents.
As she said, there would be time a plenty in the future to enjoy each other’s company.

Matthew smiled broadly as Isobel announced Matthew’s proposal and her subsequent acceptance to her parents, and gladly took Mr. Griffiths’ offered hand in congratulations.
He replied to Mr. Griffiths’ request that he look after Isobel:
“Of course I shall look after her. Although I shall never seek to replace you, I can promise you that she is most dear to me, and I shall care for her like no other.”

When Isobel stated that she was sure “Matthew will look after me quite wonderfully”; Matthew nodded in confirmation, and agreed that they should return home, to enable her to rest.

As the two couples walked back to the carriages awaiting them, so they might make a speedy journey back to the Griffiths family home, they kept their silence, each couple seemingly lost in their own private moment.
Matthew could feel that Isobel was in pain, her feet still tender from the dancing the previous night, by the manner with which she gripped his arm, as they strode side by side.
As they reached the carriages, Matthew opened the door for her and held out his hand to assist her climb up into the carriage.
As they settled into their seats and the carriage pulled away, Matthew looked into her eyes and simply smiled. He was as happy as he had ever been.
As they arrived at the house, he asked her:
“My Love, do you wish me to stay with you, as you rest, or should I return later?”
He asked out of courtesy, but he would quite happily sit either at her bedside, or in the Parlour, depending on her wishes and those of her parents.
He dismounted quickly, and again held out his arm to assist Isobel as she climbed down to the gravel driveway.
He hoped he might also enjoy a quick snooze, as he waited, unnoticed by his soon-to-be in-laws.

The walk back through the park seemed to take an eternity and Isobel’s feet and legs complained every step of the way, she was definitely glad of Matthew’s warmth and support that seemed to seep into her through the many layers of fabric that separated them. Her breath whooshed out of her and a small whimper –almost- escaped from her lips as her beau handed her up into the carriage.

He entered behind her and she whispered her thanks to him, she nestling as close as she dared to within the confines and the privacy of the carriage. She took great pleasure in taking deep breaths and slowly letting them out, enjoying the freedom that her loosely laced corset gave her.

“hmmmmm?” she answered, having been in a daydream world of her own while they drove in a companionable silence “well, of course I’d like you to stay, but I’m sure it will be very boring for you waiting around while I rest so I leave the decision up to you my love” a little shiver ran through her body as she said those words.

The carriage slowed, and then halted. Matthew dismounted first and then helped Isobel down. She placed her hands on his shoulders and gave him a cheeky smile before stepping lightly to the ground and letting her hands linger there for a moment. Her parents carriage pulled up moments later and so, with a slight pout she withdrew her touch and turned to the front door, disguising a yawn.

“Would you like some tea or other refreshment Matthew?” she asked him softly, rubbing her chilled hands against her arms as they stepped inside. She pulled off her gloves carefully and handed both them and her cloak to the maid, who gasped as she saw the glitter of the new ring adorning her hand. Isobel smiled and nodded, speaking quietly to the girl “Yes, he asked me to marry him isn’t it wonderful? Do you think you could ask Cook to arrange for some refreshments please, with hot drinks. I’m not sure where we will be taking them yet” The maid bobbed a curtsey and hurried off, more than likely to spread the news amongst the other staff.

Isobel’s parents arrived then and she smiled to them “I’ve asked for some hot drinks and refreshments Mama. Where would you like to take them?” There was no answer while the two disrobed their coats and gloves. “In the parlour I think” replied her mother “Next to the fire. I am chilled quite to the bone”

“Go ahead without me my dears” her father instructed. “I have a few telephone calls to make, most importantly to the paper to announce your engagement!” The party of three proceeded into the warmth of the parlour, the two ladies huddling as close as they could to the fire without setting their voluminous skirts ablaze.

Matthew opened the door to the Parlour for both women and followed them inside.
He waited until they were bith settled before clearing his throat nervously and then saying:
"I know Miss Isobel is tired from last night and our walk round the Park, but I would like to ask your views whilst we are together, regarding plans for the Wedding."

He paused for breath before adding "As a Guards Officer, there are certain things that society expects from a Wedding Ceremony and I would like to maintain the traditions wherever possible, but also wish to incorporate any ideas that your family may want to add."

He looked over at Isobel and smiled, using her image in his mind to galvanise his confidence, before continuing.

"One tradition which survives to this day is the armed escort of a Guards Officer's 'bride to be' to the Chapel, or whichever house of God the ceremony is to take place within. I know you have met my close friend, Major John Hughes. With your assent, I would ask him to be the Captain of the Guard for us, as well as my best man. We have become very close friends and I feel his inclusion in our special day would be appropriate."

As he looked over at Mrs Griffiths, he wasn't sure if he had stumbled into a subject she wasn't yet ready to discuss, so to clarify he asked:

"Have I spoken too soon, of matters which should wait a while longer? Please forgive me if I have, as I have never been in this position before, and just want everything to be perfect!"

Isobel squirmed in her seat as Matthew spoke of the wedding. She could hardly believe that this was all happening. She had only known this man for a matter of weeks, and yet here they were, engaged the day after her coming out ball. She was so exhausted that this all felt like a dream but she couldn’t suppress the excitement that bubbled up inside of her. It was every girls dream to fall in love at first sight and to be whisked off her feet in the manner Matthew had swept her.

A sly look at her mother confirmed that the older woman was just as smitten with the guardsman as her daughter was. Slowly Matthew’s words penetrated her tired brain and she sat up straighter and paid attention, fiddling with her ring that felt oh so strange settled on the fourth finger of her left hand. She returned his smile and nodded at him encouragingly.

“But Papa must be the one to walk me down the aisle” she protested hotly and indignantly. She froze for a moment after her outburst, a hand pressed to her mouth “My apologies” she murmured quietly. A lady must not be prone to sudden outpourings of emotion she knew and privately she remonstrated with herself.

After a moment she continued “I agree that Major Hughes should be a part of the ceremony. It is clear that you are very close to each other. I should like it if he were involved, but I would have to insist on Papa walking me down the aisle. Of course if it is an army tradition, Major Hughes could walk alongside us” Isobel sat back, confident that she had rectified her mistake and reached a suitable compromise. A slight nod from Mrs Griffiths told her that she had done well.

Mrs Griffiths stood and walked over to Matthew’s side, patting him on a shoulder “Come and sit dear, if you are to be one of the family, you should make yourself comfortable. It is a new situation for ourselves also, but I do not think you are too forward. It would be ideal to discuss preliminary arrangements now”

She waited until he had settled himself and returned to her own seat “When were you thinking of holding the ceremony Matthew? I only ask as there will be much planning to do and it will influence how large a ceremony there will be” She smiled up at her husband as he entered and picked up her needlework “All done George dear? Good. I was just asking Matthew here when he had in mind for the ceremony”

“Mama?” Isobel asked almost timidly “If it needs to be soon, could we not have a small family ceremony and reception, and a larger party or ball to celebrate afterwards?”

She watched her parents exchange looks, as if they were communicating silently and she sighed softly, hoping that her own wedded life would lead to a partnership as close and loving as that of her parents “Hmmmm Yes I think that would be an acceptable alternative, if time is of the essence Matthew?” Mr Grifffiths confirmed “What about your family Matthew? I do not seem to remember much mention of them, and obviously they will need to be included”

“I will ask our Regimental Adjutant, as I suspect I am going to be placed back on the Active Duty list soon, as I am almost completely healed from my wounds, and the War is still raging. Even a newly-married soldier is still needed at the front!”

He looked at both women, hoping he had not spoken too honestly, and had them start to worry over something which may not happen for a while yet.

“Isobel – I heartily agree that your Father should give you away, as that is his right as your Father. I would not dream of having it any other way. John's role would change from Captian of the Guard outside the Church, to my Best Man inside of it. The traditions I spoke of are long standing, but do not encroach upon the privacy of the family during this most holy of days.”
He paused for breath and to make sure the women were reassured by his words.

“As tradition dictates I cannot see you the day before our wedding, Major Hughes – John, will collect you and your Father from the house with a military escort. They will ride with you, on horseback. You and your Father would of course travel by coach or carriage, and they would act as escort from here to the Chapel. I am going to ask if we could marry in the Guards’ Chapel, unless you would rather the ceremony take place elsewhere?”

Mr Griffiths nodded as Matthew spoke of being returned to the front, and the need to consult his regimental organisers with regards to the speed needed for their union. A meaningful look passed between Isobel’s parents, which she noticed, but did not understand just yet.

She turned to her mother, about to ask what they knew and she did not, but Matthew had addressed her directly and she shifted in her seat to look up at him. Slowly she nodded her head “I would not have a problem with that arrangement, as long as Papa walks me up the aisle” She glanced first at her mother, then her father, “Mama, Papa? Do you feel that would be acceptable?”

Mr Griffiths answered “I think that would be most agreeable” he paused “we can work the finer details out closer to the time, but we must honour Matthew’s traditions, as he is honouring ours don’t we my dear?” He addressed his last question to his wife, and she nodded, taking a sip of her tea as she did so, and then dabbing at her mouth with her handkerchief.

Mrs Griffiths then inclined her head “We could make an announcement at our church could we not, perhaps a small service there either before or after the official wedding ceremony, whichever is more convenient. I am more than happy for the main ceremony to be at your Guards Chapel Matthew” She looked to Isobel who had gone strangely quiet, and saw her daughter was struggling to hide a yawn.

Giving a small smile she continued “I am sure Isobel will be more than happy for us to discuss this while she rests” Standing and rousing her daughter from her stupor she led the girl to a day bed near the window, settling her on it and drawing a light blanket around her slender form as Isobel reclined and dozed, the comfortable hum of voices enveloping her. "Matthew, are there any other traditions of which we should be aware?" she inquired of the young man
