looking to weite a story about a time travaing scientist sent back in time from the 39th century, to
study the mating habits of human beings. back in the 20th century.it's a race against time to save humanity.
he's been given enhanced hearing and an invisbillity cloak, to study them upclose without being seen.
any help would be much appreciated.

Not just an invisibility cloak, it muffles sound within a zone, so that the squeals of door hinges and the creaks of floor boards will not be heard. Locks are not a problem.

And a recording device that captures everything in exquisite detail. “Humans of the twentieth century,” he notes, “have a different language reserved for sex. The words are familiar, but if taken literally often contradict reality. One woman calls her lover ‘daddy’ despite incestuous sexual relationships being considered taboo in this period - although there are no common genetic markers to indicate a close biological relationship between the two. Perhaps she is his adoptive daughter, but I lean towards a confusion in the language.”

How about adding a more true layer of 4 dimensional space (time)? Make it so they can move and watch from any time. So for example, the traveller walks in the 4th dimension to a house being build. He can circumvent any fences by going back when it was still grassland, then moving forwards in time until it's being build. They'll walk up the stairs to the bedroom. From there they look in time, seeing what has happened in that room in the future, present, or past. Thanks to the time travel technology it is as simple as moving from one side of the room to the other, only they can do so in time.

That way the traveller can move in their own time to any position, up close and personal, while being separated by years of time. They can freely do anything without being noticed. They just need to be in the same room. It ties neatly with just one technology, the time travelling. Less suspension of disbelief, as you only need to accept that the time travelling exists and works as described. No invisibility, no noise cancelling. Just one technology that's introduced. It is also a novel way to look at it.

In case you want to be more accurate, the time travel and time seeing is calibrated for the movement of the Earth through space and it's rotation.

You can still go for genetic alterations that increase sight, smell, hearing and the like. Genetic engineering is a small leap compared to time travel or invisibility.

This genetic engineering might also have been the cause of the problems, removing the diversity people get from normal mating. They realise this, but have insufficient data how they did it in the past.

I would suggest to use a grammar and spellcheck that doesn't use AI. There's a lot of spelling and grammar mistakes in your post. Unfortunately the AI filters of Lit can flag stories that use spell and grammar check extensively. Be careful for the type you're using. Maybe a human editor wants to help from the start, which can take another load off.

I like Husky’s 4D approach, but perhaps go one step further and have a certain elasticity in play. To see/sense the past is like peering through a cloudy membrane. The more one presses against the membrane, the clearer the past, but also the past becomes sensitive to the future. Imagine being touched by a ghost that you can’t see but it feels cool and smooth, slippery, almost wet, almost like a condom stretched over invasive fingers, and that… No, that isn’t a finger.

It's an interesting premise. But where's the beginning, middle and end?

Is he the only one sent back in time, or are others?

Perhaps he needs to trace someone's family tree exactly, and goes backwards generation after generation, watching the previous generation being concived?

Does the time traveller get involved in any sexual activity, or are they always a passive observer?

What do they need to do or observe for the mission to be complete?

Beginning.... the yr is 37.45 mankind is on the blink of extinction
hundreds of yrs before, just after the hundred yr war.scientists developed
a pill.that takes care of your every need.including your sexuel needs.
children came from a test tube,no need for that disgusting mating habit.
over time, humans forgot how to fuck.

middle........ nature started fighting back.people were becoming immune
the government tride covering it up the porolation were out on the streets
protesting, about this time scientists discovered it was possible to travel
back to any point in history.1985 was picked at random. the location london.
time 9.30pm, saturday night.two renowned scientists dr Kaelin Quasar. male and anzoologist
dr. Zorvath,female............that's as far as i've got .exuse the typo.

So they go back in time to rediscover how fucking works?

Both are horrified at the bodily contact as they silently observe the mating ritual of the primitives. So unsanitary! But they feel their vestigial genitals start to stir, both confused. Surely, it isn't normal for a male urinary organ to be so stiff, or for their to be lubrication in the female? They should make sure it's not an effect of the time travel, and so inspect each other, just to be safe.

Dr. Zorvath: Oh, but that feels so strange! Dare I say... Good? You don't think... what they're doing would feel as good, do you? But how would it even work? The geometries, you'd have to angle everything just so.

Dr. Quasar: And how do we even know this is actually what mating is? Maybe this is something else? Perhaps a religious ceremony? They do keep screaming for their god, after all.

Dr. Zorvath: Sorry, were you talking? I was poking this strange little nub above my hole to see if it felt good and lost track of your words. Please, repeat yourself. Ooh! Sorry, paying attention now.
