To Bodly Go (IC)

Kyle MacLeod

"Steady as she goes lieutenant." Kyle said to his helmsman as Trinity drifted past the spacedock doors and out into space. The sight of the countless stars seperated by the endless black of space was a sight Kyle never grew tired of seeing, but his knowledge of the coming mission dimmed it somewhat.

Kyle tried to clear his mind and focus on the here and now. Trinity had cleared the thrusters only area surrounding the spacedock and now waited solely on his order to engage impulse and begin their mission. Kyle rose from his seat and adjusted his uniform as he looked at the stars for a moment longer./

"Lieutenant Arun engage impulse engines and set a course for Wolf 359. Bring us to warp 8 as soon as we are cleared." He said to Arun then turned to Commander Wolf. "Assemble the senior staff for a meeting in one hour. I will be in my ready room, you have the bridge Commander."

Kyle walked to his ready room and only once the doors closed behind him did he allow himself to relax. This was going to be a difficult first mission...

Commander Wolf knew that this was a new situation to be in for everyone, least it was for her. She nodded to the order the Captain gave her, she sat down and crossed one leg over the other. She had a bad feeling something may happen, but kept it quiet. She was being watched now, by everyone on the ship. She had to do her job and had to do a damn good job. She was multi talented like most people here, her eyes looked forward and was open to everything around her. Thinking for a moment, she smiled some, she was in charge and liked it. Though she wasn't a power hungry women like most could be, she enjoyed the crew and didn't even know them.

Dr. Vayen

The doctor sat quietly, appearing almost meditative with her gaze focused on the main viewscreen. It was the first time she saw the stars with such intimacy - she had been exposed to intricately constructed replications of space, but she had always been aware that it was a simulation. She distinctly recalled reminding herself of the falsity throughout such presentations to keep from becoming overly anxious.

As she stared at what she knew to be real space, she felt a sense of levity.

Savok's voice brought Dr. Vayen's attention back to the crew. She couldn't help but smile in response to his formal report coupled with chair swiveling. It must have been his timing.

Her eyes fell on Lieutenant Arun as Captain MacLeod addressed him; she would remind herself to make formal introductions with him in the near future. In the meantime, she would consider the captain's orders. Warp 8 and senior staff meeting? Dr. Vayen found herself excited at the prospect of an adventure and would await the details with speculative wonder.

As Commander Wolf took the bridge, Dr. Vayne stood from her seat and approached the other woman. She expressed that she had duties to attend in sickbay and added "I'll see you at the meeting," before making her way to the turbolift.

She would allow her eyes to scan over those that occupied the bridge before departing, a sincere smile on her lips. She felt more at ease than she had in a long time and she looked forward to her work with renewed spirit. She would leave and attempt to conduct business as usual while she awaited the time of the meeting.

Lieutenent Aurn

Wolf 359! Odd destination for our shake-down cruise.

"Aye Sir." My fingers danced over the console as I noticed the captan leave the bridge.

"Course laid in for Wolf 359, Commander. Going to impulse. Warp 8 in 20 seconds."

"...10..."

"...5... Engaging warp engines...."

The familiar whine of the building energies in the warp engines rapidly climbed in pitch towards warp threshold. Then we left Sol space dock behind in a flash of light.

"ETE Wolf 359... 2 days, 19 hours, 11 minutes, Sir"

Great. Now I just needed to not do anything outrageous like sprout eyes on tentacles, and I might just fit in here.

I once again focused on my ears, ensuring they were properly formed. Difficult to get right, you know?

Warbro

There was that tenseness when the warp engines engaged, not that it was needed, nor that it would help anyway if something went crytically wrong. The warp engaged and he breathed an unnoticable sigh of relief. He went over his scans, weaponry reported no problems at all and the shields still held firmly. Proximity scans showed them to still be in the clear. For a moment he wondered if he should get ready to join the meeting, but then again he was the Security chief so he had to be there.

He glanced at the viewscreen, the stars passing them, it gave the feeling of movement, not that they were moving at impulse speed, but much faster. A speed most Klingon ships could perhaps struggle with, but they were built for war, not speed. He was quite satisfied with the weaponry on the Trinity, but it was not a Klingon warship. He stood at his post and waited, he had time.

~One week Prior to departure~

Security had just been doing it's job, but it had still pissed her off. Little snot nosed barely out of academy idiots. Kayla hadn't thought she's need to be in uniform to board the Trinity. Stupid of her really; she knew better. Maybe she'd been looking for a reason to not board and just go back home. With mother retired and moved offworld, home was safe again for the first time in her adult life.

That brought her thoughts right back around to what had been in the back of her mind since it had happened. She pushed Caleb back into the place she kept the memories and the fears. Not a fear that he had died, but a fear he hadn't. A fear they had gotten him. A fear he had become one of the things she could honestly say she hated. Kayla Soffen let a heavy sigh through her lips and carried on.

In uniform, with credentials in hand she apologized to the shipyard security guards and went to her ship to get settled in and her domain in the condition she would accept.

~Three days prior to Departure~

Engineering would be acceptable. The men and women working under her would survive as well. There had only been one or two that she'd had to bust chops on. One was the junior most Petty officer, the other her number two. He had made the mistake of assuming he could "Be the man of the house". Very bad call. He knew better now. They had worked out, that for departure, he would be the one up on the bridge doing the stuffy, boring job of manning the Engineering console. That left one less step and considerablly less distance between her and her main duty.

~Departure day~

Kayla knew the rest of the senior crew would have finnished arriving, so she kept herself down in main engineering monitoring the engines.

When the X.O. had called for her status report Kayla gave Petty officer Mansfield, her new project, an order to give the report that engineering was ready.

The ship nudged out of the clamps. Kayla smiled and said to the crew around her "Oh, it is the wedding night boys and girls," she grinned at their confussion, "Captain's making helm treat her like a virgin after the wedding. Soft and gentle." Most of her people managed small laughs. They knew that had been meant lightly. Or at least they hoped.

Simulatiously engineering received the call for warp eight as Lieutenant Martin tapped the comm to Engineering as he had been instructed to. "Ma'am," he said with a twinge of fear for her reply, "Ship's course set for Wolf 359. Captain wants senior officers in his ready room. You going to handle this?"

Kayla stood stock still. What in the hell was he thinking taking the ship there? Before Martin could ask again she said "You take the meeting. Make my apologies. If he wants me up there he can ask me himself."

Before Martin could say anything she said "Soffen out." tapped her comm and went back to the task of monitoring the warp drive. If the Captain kept this kind of thing up, she might just have to move the still set up higher on the priority list.

As the starship accelerated to Warp 8, Savok adjusted the ship's sensors.

He gave the captain a nod as the man retreated to his Ready Room.

One of the smaller displays before him showed the unique warp field as it enveloped the ship with its curving nimbus. Savok noted the doctor's departure from the bridge with a nod of his head to her as she was leaving.

Further adjustment of the sensors focused a narrow, penetrating beam ahead of the ship. This sensor beam rebounded constantly into the ship's navigational deflector, which in turn bounced the signal forward in several different directions, creating a nearly limitless path of sensor return information. Should there be anything significant or of intelligence value within a relative plane of a quarter light year, Savok would immediately get the information on his display. And, because the sensors and the navigational deflector were on two entire seperate bandwidths, there was no distortional or sub-space interference from either.

Savok had heard the meeting to take place in one hour. He logically assumed the captain would be briefing them on their mission.

Kyle MacLeod

It was shortly before the the briefing with the bridge crew and Kyle wasn't looking forward to it. Command was sending them to Wolf 359 for their first mission together and the first for Trinity. He wasn't sure why they would choose Trinity for this mission and Command gave no explanation. Certainly there were more seasoned ships nearby that could handle this with ease.

Kyle shook his head and set down the data pad containing the mission profile. He looked out the window of his ready room and thought about his first experience at Wolf 359. He had watched many friends die and many suffered worse fates. Kyle had hoped to never have to go back to the system but orders were orders.

Kyle stood up and grabbed the data pad off of the table as he headed out of his ready room and to the briefing room in front of the bridge.

Warbro

Time for the meeting was at hand, he had called one of the senior tactical officers to the bridge and have now handed over his post. He stopped at the door to the Ready Room, made sure that he was presentable and entered, he was quite surprised to find that he was the first to be there, but he took up position close to the door, staying in his Security role. The door hissed open and Captain MacLeod entered, Warbro stood at attention, something they could not get out of him,

"Captain."

The greeting was formal and short, he did not believe to waste time of a superior officer with useless remarks or lavish greetings. It was when Lieutenant Martin entered that Warbro moved from his position,

"Sorry sir, but as far as I know you are not the Enginering CO. I have not been informed that you are here on special order."

He waited for word from the captain to change his detention, but as far as he was concerned, he was following the rules

Martin stood in his tracks for a split second to consider his choices. Potentially lethal Klingon or the absolutely lethal in ways he didn't want to consider new Cheng. "No Lietenant I am not the Cheng," he kept his tone calm and steady, "But I am here on her orders while she is in Engineering doing her duty."

He gave the Klingon a closed mouth smile, not showing teeth. He had heard that some Klingons might take the showing of teeth as a challenge. "I was under the belief she had already made the arrangements that I would be her stand in."

Dr. Vayen

Dr. Vayen was keenly aware of the time as she waited in sickbay. 'Waiting', perhaps, is not the right term for it. Despite the fact that the medical facility was empty, the doctor was not the type to sit by idly. She always had a research project at hand - but now, she had a staff to consider. She grabbed their files and browsed quickly before calling an immediate meeting. Still, she found herself glancing at the time often enough that she certainly felt like she was in an active state of waiting.

She identified the specialties of individuals and worked to commit the information to memory. In an emergency, she couldn't spare the time it would require to look that sort of information up.

She laid out how she expected things to happen under her supervision. Dr. Vayen had a very matter-of-fact tone; her voice wasn't harsh or meek and her word choice left little room for interpretation. She made sure to hold herself carefully as she took steps around the room, making eye contact with every single person as she gave her little speech.

She ended the meeting by giving a short-term schedule, reminding the crew that no matter what "shift" you found yourself on, you were always on duty. Their profession was the definition of life and death.

With that, she concluded the meeting. She glanced at the time again - she had five minutes to spare until the meeting. She doubted her ability to finish anything productive, what with checking the time every 30 seconds. She announced her departure to the staff, leaving the appropriate individual in charge during her absence.

Dr. Vayen entered just moments after Martin, who she had not yet met. She didn't hear the conversation but it was obvious that Warbro was not allowing this unknown to attend the meeting. She let her eyes shift to the Security Officer and smiled, giving him a nod before crossing further in to the room.

She had no doubt the issue would be solved easily enough. Dr. Vayen took a seat and waited for the resolution and the arrival of the other senior staff members.

Kyle listened to the exchange between Warbro and Lieutenant Martin for a moment.
"Its alright lieutenant Warbro." Kyle said walking up to them. Turning to Martin, Kyle said "Thank you for coming Lieutenant but we do need the Lt.Cmdr. You can head back to engineering and I will personally contact here."

Kyle went to his chair and sat down. He hit a few buttons and opened a channel to engineering. "Lieutenant Commander Soffen. I request that you attend the meeting. We will need your incite on matters."

He hit the button before a response came. He knew from reading her file that Soffen liked to do things her own way but he hopped that he could prove to her that he wasn't like some of the more ridged captains in Starfleet.

Aurn quietly watched the senior officers going to the meeting, and wondered what they would talk about. Seemed there was a little friction going on already; the new Chief Engineer was rocking the boat, and we were barely an hour out on our first cruise.

Things might be interesting after all.

As the crew told her what they were doing she nodded, standing up she placed her hands on her hips. Wondering why this ship was sent for this mission, felt almost like a trap. But she knew that it was just in her head, her eyes looked around at the crew as they traveled the uneasy feeling still hit her but said nothing. These were the orders they got, and she knew the captain didn't like it himself.

Savok, after having been relieved by a junior sensor technician, gathered up a PADD and made his way to the briefing room.

When he entered, he saw the others had already gathered.

Savok spoke to no one as he made his way around the briefing room table and took a seat. He placed the PADD in front of him on the table. He then folded his hands in his lap and waited patiently.

Savok was unaware of the exchange between the security chief and the engineering officer. He did, however, pick up on the miniscule body postures and physical tells there had been an incident. The Vulcan filed this away, considering each species has their own peculiarities. He figured he no doubt seemed peculiar to some of them. This, he decided, was only logical.

Turning to Martin, Kyle said "Thank you for coming Lieutenant but we do need the Lt.Cmdr. You can head back to engineering and I will personally contact her.

That was all Lt. Martin needed. "Yes sir." he said and turned heading back to Engineering. The younger officer knew that if she was going to be up here she would want him there. And Samuel Martin was not going to come afoul of the Cheng again. Once was quite enough, thank you very much.

Kyle went to his chair and sat down. He hit a few buttons and opened a channel to engineering. "Lieutenant Commander Soffen. I request that you attend the meeting. We will need your incite on matters."

Kayla Soffen's eyebrow went up into her hairline in Main. He was going to insist was he? Okay, his call. The Cheng looked over to one of the Ensigns and said "You have the main until the DCO returns." With that she departed Engineering.

As she entered the turbo lift from Main it hit her how her attitude must seem to the rest of the crew. Something to address. Something to deal with. That was one of the things Kayla Soffen needed right now. Something to deal with instead of the thoughts of hanging up the uniform. She'd taken this assignment as a favor to her old friend in Starfleet Detailing. Now she started to wonder if she took this assignment as a way to bring the old fire back. Food for thought.

The turbo lift opened and the Cheng went to the entry of the Ready room. As she entered the room she realized that she hadn't bothered to get into uniform. Nothing to do about it, the Engineering coverall would just have to do. She was more comfortable in them anyways.

Looking into the room as the door opened she smiled her best and said "Captain, fellow officers, my apologies. I was making sure the mains were up to standards."

She moved to her seat and took it. "Have I missed anything?"

Warbro

When the Cheng entered after the departure of the Lieutenant he relaxed, so she wasn't in uniform, that was not his problem. Though it reeked of disrespect, he also thought logically about it and in the end it was not really disrespecful, she had just come from her work and a uniform that is dirty is worse than dirty coveralls. He stood next to the door, even though there was enough seats available, folding his arms akimbo he looked over the officers present, it seemed strange not to have the CO present, but perhaps the captain would brief her afterwards.

It occured to him that most people on this ship was multi talented, the only talent he brought to the table was his tendency for battle and protection. He stopped that train of thought before it could develop, he may not be able to do much, but he was the best at what he did or he would not be where he was. He relaxed his muscles which had tensed up as he wasted time on dishonorable thoughts, he knew better, calling forth on that centre which kept his mind focused and calm, he relaxed to a certain degree. Then he focused his attention back to the people in the room and their captain, who in turn had the look of a man with bad news.

Looking into the room as the door opened she smiled her best and said "Captain, fellow officers, my apologies. I was making sure the mains were up to standards."

She moved to her seat and took it. "Have I missed anything?"

"An introduction," Savok said with a raised eyebrow. He gave her a nod of his head. Where Vulcans usually bowed in greeting and departure, or in more formal occasions rendered the parted-finger salute, he offered a respectful nod of his head. "I am Lieutenant Commander Savok," he stated.

He noticed a look of distaste from Warbro. Then the Klingon's body posture changed. He seemed to center himself. Savok noted the Klingon's acute awareness of all that seemed to be going on around him. Even though there was obviously no threats present in the briefing room, the Klingon seemed prepared to react to one. This, Savok knew, was the way of the warrior.

Dr. Vayen

As the Chief Medial Officer awaited the beginning of the meeting, she watched as fellow senior staff members arrived. She couldn't help but study them; she had a desire to know each person as an individual. Trista had been told on previous occasions that the community of a starship was like nothing she had ever known - it was often described as a family.

The actions that unfolded in front of her were met with a professional front that kept her from reacting. She sat back in her seat with a false calm and crossed one leg over the other, placing her hands on her knee.

That is - until the Engineering CO arrived. She couldn't help but get a small smile as she watched the woman enter and observed her attitude. She seemed confident and at ease; Dr. Vayen had to admire that.

"Have I missed anything?" the woman asked nonchalantly.

"An introduction," Savok replied. Dr. Vayen couldn't suppress a quiet giggle as she observed the Vulcan's expression. After he had made his own introductions, the doctor stood and offered her hand to the other woman.

"I'm the Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Vayen."

After formally shaking hands, Dr. Vayen would return to her seat and observe Warbro for a few moments. As she looked upon him, she suddenly felt something as she observed the way he held himself. She wasn't able to identify it, but she suddenly felt like they'd have more in common than she would've thought at first.

She repositioned herself in her seat, sitting at attention as she awaited the news from Captain MacLeod.

Savok turned towards Dr. Vayen and again raised an eyebrow. He studied her quietly for a moment, then lowered his eyes to the PADD that lay on the table in front of him. Her nearly-quiet laugh was surely at his expense. He did not understand why.

Humor is a difficult concept, he thought to himself. It is not logical.

Dr. Vayen

Dr. Vayen only saw Savok watching her with a raised brow from from her peripheral vision. Which was good, because had she faced him directly she would have been in danger of giving him a stupid grin.

There was something about his matter-of-fact responses that the doctor found priceless. It was cute.

She tensed slightly as she realized that her response had been akin to a schoolgirl with a crush. She should probably watch that.
