I can only speak for myself, but as one of the mob, I welcome you!

Life's not all serious, nor is it all silliness, but both can exist together. Life's all about balance, isn't it?

Thank you both for the warm welcome. Nice place you have here.
Balance is an essential force in life. I used to moderation was, and I tried to inject moderation into everything I did.

I took moderation to excess..... , ...ha
psssssstt..Cloudy, there's lots of room under the stairs.

Perdita, thank you, and maybe you can help draw the screaming artist from inside me.

Have any of us? From when I started here back in 2000 until very recently, my member's page said "Still trying to be a writer". Now it says "Still trying to be a better - and paid - writer". Still, it's fun trying - Troll moments excepted.

Welcome, Ruminator.

Alex

My Earth Day story, The Gathering Shadows, still needs a couple of votes to be sure of qualifying. Please?

Dr M, I'm a member of an invite-only room on Zoetrope.com, where about 90% % of the members are full-time professional authors or screenwriters (I'm one of the 90%).

There's a good deal of flirting, threadjacking and joking there, mixed with the occasional serious technical question or discussion about agents, writing competitions, or legal issues.

Like the AH, the Zoetrope room is a hangout, where people
working in one of the most socially isolating professions in existence can meet and talk shit. And I have to say that in my opinion, that's what bulletin boards are for, mainly.

Which is all to say that it's not really an AH problem. It's probably more of a BB problem.

I understand your frustration. And I think you've now hopefully got the message across that when you post a thread, people should stay on topic in their replies.

OKAY PEOPLE? DON'T FUCK WITH THE DR'S THREADS. He's pissed off about it.

Thanks for the welcome Alex,

Sometimes I'm happy enough just thinking that I even have potential. Familiar with "What About Bob?".......baby steps, baby steps.

Ruminator, hello!

Of course I welcome you here. I can't think of a single person who wouldn't, if I'm completely honest.

We are all a good bunch of people really, even those of us who have a tendency to be outspoken and blow up every once in a while. ;)

Anyway, how can I not want you around, as I've still got you locked up in me cupboard. Thanks for taking that as it was intended, btw: as a pure and silly joke. You're good by me, mate.

Stick around, please.

Lou :rose:

Hm . . . this topic does pose a psuedo-reality check every once in a while, and why not? It's wonderful to know how friends feel, how people, not like ones self is/are thinking.

Just as the funsters enjoy to have fun, the more serious want to get serious - this is life afterall. Thank god for the undead.

The common thread, really, is that we all enjoy writing erotica. Some of us are fun, some flirty, some intense, some serious, some from Mensa, apparently. We are multi-cultured, we are diverse, with different attitudes, experiences, IQ levels even, and that's what makes the mosaic unique. Do you know that I have actually met GB'ers and others who are jealous of this community here? I understand where the good doctor is coming from, I also understand where Lou is coming from. We don't all know what the implications of discourse are or even what it is to be zonated, some of us don't even know what the definition of play is all about.

What a bland mix it would be to have all and nothing else.

And how dull my writing would be if there wasn't such beautiful and awe inspiring diversity. Erotica is, afterall about sex - about sex between different people. The AH board has become, for me, a place to be creative, whether intensely, or playfully.

If you don't look, even at the things that really irritate you . . . you never see, and therefore rarely experience the passion or pleasure of a different angle.

Think about it - not too far from Oedipus.

The word 'balance' is the most beautiful word in the english language, and I do it beautifully :)

P.S. I actually came here to post a serious thread today . . . but will zonate you ALL til later :) I feel funny about posting that now.

Edit to add: Had it not been for Lou's thread, I'd have never had the pleasure of meeting or reading a poem by Ruminator. I feel blessed on both a serious and fun level.

Play or work I enjoy the AH and would be disappointed if some people were deterred from posting because the board is too serious or too flippant.

Like some others I am often too full of my own self-importance (aren't all writers?) but I do appreciate the lovers, clowns and the academics. I could work out which were which if they stayed in one character long enough.

I haven't seen many sheep recently. Garderobes are buried back in history.

Punctuation, length of story, characterisation - perhaps the AH should have its own FAQ's.

If a serious writerly question is asked it is usually answered without abuse. That is a change for the better.

The Earth Day competition produced some fine writing from AH members.

NaNoWriMo benefited from Tatelou's cheerleading. Are you ready for next October?

Not everything is to my taste. I don't think everything could be to any one person's taste but we don't have to contribute to every thread.

Thank you to all who post here. I am pleased to be in your company - even newbies are welcome.

Best wishes from Og who must get back to writing.

Hi Og,

You have such a way with words. You said that all very well. I also think Charley made a very good post, with many valid points. I just want to echo both of you, really.

Yes, I am ready, and I hope to have some of you guys along with me again for NaNoWriMo this year. :)

Love,

Lou :rose:

Edit: P.S. As I said in my first post, it's all about communication and compromise. I seem to have done plenty of my own communicating this evening, now I'll work on the compromise. ;)

What Loulou said (about Charley's and Ogg's posts). There, I think that was one of the better dysfunctional family meetings I've been at in some time. We even acquired a new member (rumi).

SO, my rant is out there for all. Fire at will.

Those who have seen my postings here will know I like playing on various threads started for that purpose. My point is that same playing seems to have become the destination of every thread, regardless of the initiator's intent. My point is to keep serious threads on topic and play around on those intended for that purpose.

Sounds sensible to me.

I enjoy every aspect of the AH, from the total nonsense to the winding political threads to the alctual factual Author-y type threads that pop up now and then. But please folks, try to keep the threads on the somewhat same key that the threadstarter intended.

Lou, I see your point. It's better to be a giddy than an unwelcoming place. I think we can be both. Giddy and serious, I mean. I did something like what you did when I secided to step in. I just started to post replies in all kinds of htreads as if I had been there all the time. Did I make any intro-post? I can't really remember. The cl9imate then (december 03) was not hostile, but pretty much on shrug level. So noone took any real notice, or gave me the key to the city or anything. it was more like "New guy. Oh, ok."

The posse-trhead and the GB-raid are great examples of a good new-ness going on. There was no question that it was all just goof (unless Lou's git rumi locked up somewhere for real. You never know...), was entrertaining to read and didn't quite bother those who couldn't care.

A serious world . . . yes, yes . . . Iraq I know. Without humour, fun, sarcasm, irony - how can one even learn to write, and write WELL? Since writing is a mix. This is not rhetorical questioning.

Despite having seen Thelma and Louise, I am not a basher.

My question in all seriousness though: Why have I seen so few serious writerly threads by those, with exception, no names - they know who they are, who claim to be disappointed? Bored?

My Mother always said, and I have never in my life used the word bored since then, "The only people who are bored, are those who are boring."

Of course, I am not beyond contradiction.

I am like a mathematical conundrum that even Gauche couldn't figure out . . . everything I write has a hidden meaning. Semiotics, and absurd logic.

None of my serious threads have ever been ruined. Why? Because I moderate them myself :) And when the conversation is done . . . it's over. Solution to continue? Post another thread on what made you think the most, like a loop, just being smarter than all the rest :) That's what it's like to have control over your thread :) :rose:

Because 'they' figured it wasn't worth it (see much above). But I think I'll dig up my old festering ideas, unfest 'em and see what happens.

P. :p

Ideas are good like that, aged,....festered. :D

I have noticed a significant drop in the iq level on the AH. Whether it be because of the hijacked threads, or general topics of discussion.

mtnman > As a reference point for discussion, what is an average standard of IQ, or some barometer of the level of intelligence in discussion?

For instance, I appreciate puns, thinking that humor that requires thought is different than humor that doesn't. People would be at opposite ends of the spectrum though when asked if they considered it intelligent humor.

I read all above QP (the Q is Queen, cuz you deserve the best jewels), would have preferred the below the belt, but . . . ah yes, boring, boring, boring? (And ya know and I love ya sexy - oops flirting) . . . Worth what? Where are the oh so thought provoking posts that these people claim they have? I WANT to know, 'cuz you know . . . I love a challenge!!! :D A challenge for anyone who complains: POST something, worthy of my intellect, worthy of Joe's, worthy of Lou's, of Lucky's, of Abs - if not - I will keep having fun.

If I don't post it's cuz I am beyond my contradiction :) Are you beyond yours? Ahhh - yawn.

OOPS - being fun?

I love much ado about nothing. Yes I flirt and make suggestive remarks and highjack threads but is there anyone who can honestly say that they don't? There's a ton of bellyaching and yet no one has stepped up to do anything more than complain. So once again it's a thread where people are discussing themselves. How ironic .

people and subjects

Well, said...mention a topic and I found people usually like to turn it into "thier opinions of the topic"! Well, if they stay with the topic is one thing....the rant or rave is another.
this topic thing is a great idea. I believe - truly - that tell me "you can't" and it is a challenge to make it happen! so, for a story - I would like to say - if it "can't" happen - find an imaginative way to make it happen...
Oh, I really liked reading....great minds create...believe it so!

Posting~

GUILTY ... GUILTY ...GUILTY!!!

"Hi Doc,"

Hey ogg~
Tate~
Seno'ra perdita~

I'm guilty of spending way to much time writing.
Then I take a break and head for the AH. I posted a
couple times asking questions about writing and only
response I got was from perdita and tatelou. (ty)
(The sun shone brightly thru the bay window...)

So I headed else where to learn more on grammer
and Literary ART. So like all animals I frequented
my paths and keep coming back and hunting for
(intel-conv) and woohoo found myself here. (ty)

Thanks to you all there is a place to go and vent
with out getting some part of my body licked. Well
not that thats a bad thing...lol

My school keeps me busy and writing is a passion,
but interacting is still a fault I guess cause here I am
too. Yak-in about nothing and enjoying great company.

Bows Humble...tao

I am a notorious threadjacker.
I admit it.

I am also one of those people that feel the need to inject humor in everything, I guess it's one of my major flaws. It's also a sign of my boredom in general.

There are other reasons, too personal to get into, that I tend to be overactively playful,,,but in the long run, I've found out a lot about some of the different personalities that make up the author's present here. It's a beautiful blend.

However since I have caused such a ruckus, I will exile myself to the general boards or perhaps do some community service in "how to". I can pen an article on "How to behave in an adult environment".

It's been fun folks.

I thread jack you no more.

~A~

Hey Lukie.

Your post provoked a thought, several really, that I thought might merit discussion.

I understand rants, attacks, opinions, challenges and other normal reactions in conversation. I wanted to ask for opinions on what is seen as a hijack and what is seen as expanding on the original thought? If the thread is nothing but individual opinions on the same topic or subject, doesn't that lean more to the mundane?

I think my question is, can we distinguish between a reply that challenges our opinion(self esteem) and one that challenges our thinking?

Re: Will you still love me tomorrow?

I have read all of your posts carefully.

I'm just undrugged happy :D DAMN me. Lou? Lou? Smart ass you too. MM like that and taking over since no one else has ;) Get contol boy!

Oh right . . . you ARe fucking yourself . . . too quickly for me ;)

Good ruminatin', Rumin. I am still appreciating your thinking.

For a hijack I already noted Joe's 'que sera' thread. He posted his own interesting answer to a question and received a few good responses. His question to my first post was good cos it made me think further. Then a flirting hijack killed the thread. I'd still love to see more responses to the subject.

Your second point quoted above is astute and something I wish there was more of, esp. on controversial threads.
