The word honeymoon first appeared in the 16th century. 'Honey' is a reference to the sweetness of a new marriage and 'moon' is a bitter acknowledgment that this sweetness, like a full moon, would quickly fade.

It dates a little further, but i cant remember if it dates back to the Viking era or if it was further back and in the middle east. It goes back to the whole honey being an aphrodisiac thing again. The father in law was expected to provide the new groom with mead for a month, which was suposed to make the newly wed couple as randy as rabbits in the springtime and result in a child. This lasted for a lunar month, and hence the term Honeymoon :)

They quite often did not spend it in the home they would be sharing either. Spending it at their father in law's house, or in a specially made dwelling. Which probably results in the tradition that sruvives today of going away for your honeymoon :)
