Geese "V" Formation

Geese fly in a "V" shape because it is the most efficient. The lead bird encounters the most wind drag and has to flap its wings more; however, those birds on the outside of the "V" benefit from the air that is moved when the lead bird flaps and don't have to flap as often. This leads to a ripple effect wherein the total output of energy is greatly reduced for all but the lead goose. After frequent intervals, the lead duck switches out and a new "lead duck" takes his place. This enables geese and other birds to fly longer distances with less energy, especially during migration seasons.
