Living in a city has its ups and downs, good and bad things .. and temptations to explore, all those carnal sins with each corner we turn. Some become complacent and immune, while others seize opportunities.. That’s kind of what this story is about in some obscure sense. How decadent can the human mind get when tempted and teased? Packed like sardines in the city of concrete and steel, sometimes immune to what’s going on around you isn't a good thing.. or is it?
Tyra, a free-lance writer for one of numerous publishers within New York, spent her life with work colored glass blinders on. Working from home, from her car, hell.. some days from her vacation spots even, forever typing her way up the ladder. It sounds more glamorous and adventurous that it really is. She got by, but she wasn't 'known'. Her aim was of course the front page, but she settled for any page after the first four years of beating her heels into the New York concrete.
Up town, down town. From the sprawling northern estates down to the Jersey shore, she hunted that ONE story that would make or break her... In doing so, she doesn't spend much time with the opposite sex. Just her and her teacup poodle, Brutus. Probably the only male she even stops to notice these days. Dedicated or closed off, she gave up trying to have any real relationships with the opposite sex when she always chose work over the man. Not to worry though! She had her handy-dandy BoB... And he didn't snore, eat all her food nor leave socks all over the damned place.. Nope! Bob.. god bless that inventor into heaven! ... kept her sane and SANE!
She had been day dreaming, staring out her apartment window to the barely visible alley below. The window open to let in what breeze the sweltering June sun would allow. Her fan going full bore rustled her hair and small thin top but didn't seem to stave off the damned sweat she was pouring from every where indecent for a lady to mention.. Even talking to herself! Her eyes moved, something had caught her attention down there, but too annoyed with the sweat, she missed whatever it was. However, she did not fail to notice the moving van.
A common sight in this area of New York. Packed like sardines, the apartments lining both sides of the street were each five stories tall, all identical and all tightly pushed together and owned by what had to be nearing 'slum lord' status. A trash truck barely managed to squeeze through each week down there, surprised to see a U-Haul made it attached to some manly looking truck... judging from the bit of truck bed she could see.
Her eyes never wandered across to the vacant windows not more than 20 feet from hers. It just didn't interest her nor dawn on her she might just be getting a new neighbor.. They wouldn't speak, wouldn't ask each other for eggs or sugar. It wasn't done here. She'd lived in the building she was in and this apartment for seven years, she didn't know who was on the other side of her walls, let alone across an alley.. That might as well have been across town in her world. So she paid it no mind when the lights came on across from her. Didn't spare it a thought that the bedrooms lined up, nor the small living room window would as well. She hadn't had a neighbor across from her in seven years.
"Brutus stop that!" She scolded as the pup jumped onto her bed and began digging. At the sound of her voice and icy blue eyes, he halted... for now at least. Turning back to her laptop, her desk growing ever more uncomfortable, she stared at the flashing cursor, hoping for some kind of epiphany. Lifting her brown thick mane from the back of her neck, she sat up from her slouch enough to grab a little hair tie. Scooping the clinging mass into a haphazard knot, she tied it up and out of the way. Fingers brushing a wisp of stray hair from her eyes, she replaced her rounded fingertips back to the keys for one more chance at something respectable for tomorrow's issue of some teen magazine knock off done here locally.
"Perhaps some pointless air headed.." She paused to make air-quotes, "ten ways to make your best friends boyfriend notice you." She sighed, her fingers moving to rub the bridge of her nose and between her eyes. She was growing restless in the heat.
