Look at the trade metrics. We WANT Mexico to be successful as a nation, it's in every bodies best interest. Consequently we need to work with and through the Mexican government to clean out the cartels.

The cartels have infiltrated and/or corrupted virtually every local government, the police forces, and portions of the military. The only trusted and really well trained military arm are the Mexican Marines and there just isn't enough of them.

Why doesn't Sheinbaum want US help? National pride? Or the very real fear that the cartels will assassinate her just as they have mayors and other elected officials throughout the country. Then there is the financial aspect. The cartels ARE bringing significant cash into Mexico. Money they use to buy firearms, politicians, and police. BUT that money does end up in the economy.

And that is where Trumps full court press at the border is important. If we can substantially reduce the flow of drugs coming in, we are substantially reducing the cash flowing out. This begins removing the financial considerations from Sheinbaums decision tree and severely reduces the cartels ability to bribe officials. In that regard the street price of drugs is going up but it's too early to tell if this is because of supply constraint or inflation.

Mexico is a failed nacrostate. It is Somalia with mestizos. Entire swaths of the country are under cartel control. Crime is worse than just about anywhere other than Haiti or Venezuela.
So yeah, I am thinking Mexicans would be pretty ok with a strong centralized government.
