ESPN, which first reported the story that other outlets have picked up, assumes that Trump wants the stadium named after him as a political gift or quid pro quo. While it’s true that Trump and Commanders owner Josh Harris get along well (POTUS is joining Harris at the Commanders game this weekend), there’s another way this could go down.

Naming rights help finance debt on new NFL stadiums and I’m sure that’s part of the Commanders financing plan. Trump’s name is on lots of buildings he leases but doesn’t own. There’s nothing to say the Trump organization couldn’t bid on naming rights for the new stadium in DC.
