What the President should do is go on national TV and appeal to the State legislatures which don't already have just, logical, due process statues, to do as much as individual liberty-revering possible to make sure at least obviously mental troubled individuals like Nikolas Cruz cannot keep and bear arms of any kind until they can demonstrate that safeguard is no longer warranted. Doing so would also provide Trump the opportunity to urge State legislatures to tighten-up all existing statues legislated to prevent certifiably mentally ill folks from keeping and bearing.

The record keeping part, the digital investigation parts done by local, state and federal leo, can almost COMPLETELY eliminate the human negligence/error part of the equation by simply incorporating an immutable blockchain to store all information collected, which then can be processed however any computer is commanded, virtually cutting the human error rate to 0 in that analytical process.

Once a blockchain is incorporated, that issue will eventually be rendered irrelevant (% wise) too, as the collection of all needed information will soon be almost fully automatized/digitized, and once collection is a digital part of an immutable blockchain, it's all immutable solid gold from there to eternity.

I too am a gun owner, I don't own any automatic weapons, but I understand the appeal. (25-yrs in the Marine Corps; I've fired the standard array.) For most it's not a matter of expecting a siege, it's the enjoyment (thrill) of firing automatic weapons on occasion. Why do people own muscle cars and high speed motorcycles whose power can't be fully realized on public streets and highways?
