It amazes me that some guy took the time to figure out how and why to bend all those tubes just so that when you blow into them, properly tuned fart noises come out.

I chose to play the tuba because of the sound and because it is the necessary bottom voice in any wind instrument ensemble. Additionally, tuba music can be felt. Stand at the curb when a marching band passes by in a parade and you'll feel the moving air against your skin. Tubas sound great when they play the melody and if you've never heard that, get thee to a TubaChristmas concert this year. TubaChristmas.com will have a list beginning around Thanksgiving and adding more for a few weeks after Thanksgiving. You can also look on YouTube for tuba music recordings. Open your mind and you'll understand why we tuba players stick together and enjoy playing our instruments.

Yes, and there are also female tuba players. Harvey Phillips spent his entire adult life making the tuba popular, convincing composers and arrangers to write for the tuba. He created TubaChristmas, Octubafest, and other events to bring the tuba to the center of attention of serious musical performances. Thanks to Harvey, there are now tuba concertos and symphonies and tuba professor positions at colleges and universities.
