Does the series actually recover at any point? The first book was really good but goes downhill after that quite rapidly, I've never bothered reading past the fourth book (Fist of the Fold I think). I really liked the background to it all but the stories just really started to drag me down after a while.

Well Goodkind does have a habit of beating a drum over certain issues but I still feel he writes pretty well, he's one of my favorite authors so I feel like I have to defend him a little but there are books that do have problems. The latest is the third from last and you can tell he's trying to wrap up the story, you can also tell that he's been reviewing the previous books to see what he can include. I'd say that in style at least Chainfire is very close to the first book. By the way, its 'Blood of the Fold' and the first time I read it I was really confused by the middle of it. When I read it the second time I realised that I had to chalk it up to the fact that I was in hospital and doped up at the time!

WantonWitch, you get the point of what I'm talkinf about. Flowery language I often find is the most insincere form of writing that exists, even speaking it I can't help but sound sarcastic, but it still manages to make one or two women swoon. I'm not a fan of it, that's why I prefer people to speak plainly. Its the same with poetry

I've had poems published and had them up to critical judgement from my lecturers when I was doing my degree and most people think they're pretty good (i'm passing on their judgement, personally I'm my biggest critic) but all the poetry that I write (or used to) takes me about 5 minutes. Max. If you can have poetry of apparently high quality around you whenever you want it, it devalues poetry as a whole. Poetry to me is just a way of saying something in a needlessly complicated manner. Still, my girlfriend seems to like it so I still give her one or two.

Unfortunately I'm a bit cynical (boy is that an understatement )....... but I enjoyed replying lmao.
Have to admit I'm not a great poetry fan. And to be honest I've yet to meet anyone who isn't thier own worst critic.
Your girlfriend is a very lucky woman, as I've no doubt you mean all the words you write for her

Sure I mean the words but I prefer saying, or even better showing her that I love her, just by hugging or kissing, or just being near her. I think of myself as a bit of a loner (my freinds have dubbed me 'the hermit') so I'm not really a touchy feely person either, so when I am with her I want her to know that i mean it all. Words just don't do feelings justice, and in poetry they feel more forced and planned and... just contrived. Less honest. When I say 'I love you' I mean that 'I love you' You don't need to decode it line by line because everything that needs to be said can be summed up in those three words.

Oh and just for the record, I am the lord and master of all that is cynical. Bow before my cynicism and discover heretofore unknown depths of that which is unbelieving!

Stone of Tears = amazing.
Blood of the Fold = v. good
Temple of the Winds = mind-blowingly good
Soul of the Fire = meh
Faith of the Fallen = dies of amazingness of book
Pillars of Creation = vaguely meh
Naked Empire = okay-ish
Chainfire = amazingly brilliant

Faith of the Fallen is the best, in my opinion.

I'd say that the books actually improve. Blood of the Fold can be a bit odd, but Temple of the Winds is really, really, really good. First Goodkind I read. Whatever you do, get through Soul of the Fire and read Faith of the Fallen. It is so amazing... Kahlan's battle prowess and leadership really comes through, especially in her confrontation with her half-brother (Prince Harold of Galea). Really amazing. She's so clever and ruthless! Richard is so admirable too, and Nicci is so twisted..

Plas, I've read Robert Jordan. Not for me. I really can't stand his tone and his characters are rather boring. Really not my style.
