In actuality, it was quite common for musicians/singers to cover another's song. This was quite common for a number of years, but then it seems that people got snobby or wanted more original works. It seems the pendulum has swung again and nowadays it is getting in fashion for cover-ers.

My only two concepts of such is:

That's an interesting concept.....I saw him do this on the Unplugged show years ago and loved it. As we all get a little grayer the slower tempo may be apropos.

Sampling is theft if they don't get permission......and that usually means compensation.
I like when covers reignite the original artists careers like:

Walk This Way- Run DMC did with Aerosmith. Covers on TV shows like The Voice also spark itune sales for original artists.

I LOVE unplugged versions of songs covered by the original artist.

In a reversal of that, you have Staind' which started with an unplugged version of "it's been awhile" and then their later full group version. (sadly no sample of the former)

I agree, love that song and XTC. I was actually trying to look for this song in my Spotify playlists but decided it might be controversial here, hehe.

I am ecstatic that other people love covers, for some reason I really get into them. I especially ones that are unplugged and mellow than the original. I have a few Spotify playlists of covers that I enjoy.

I love when a cover is done in a different style that demonstrates the greatness of the original lyrics and tune, regardless of the style.

On the other hand, a cover that mimics the original is just a rip-off, IMHO, as it shows no added artistic value.

In reality, all karaoke songs are covers of originals, but just as karaoke, I don't love all covers.


Absolutely loved the original song by XTC. I wouldn't have ever noticed a cover if I wasn't aware of the original (awareness for me usually translates in some part to 'like'...well, unless I totally despised it, but then I'd say something like "and I didn't like the cover, too").
