United States Senate Mega-Thread

The rumors were that Peters really wanted to run for the Governorship in 2014, but national Democrats pushed him to run for the United States Senate instead that year. Not shocked Peters called it quits after 12 years: This tells me Peters knows deep down; the Democrats will NOT regain control of the United States Senate until either 2028 or 2030 at the earliest.
Eh, if anything his retirement might shore up the Dems' hold on that seat. Peters has never been a champion vote-getter. And remember, Michigan hasn't elected a Republican senator since 1994.

BREAKING NEWS ALERT: United States Senator Tina Smith (DFL-MN) will NOT be seeking reelection to second full six-year term in 2026, which tells me the Democrats can forget about winning back control of the United States Senate next year or even 2028.
You expect the Republicans to pick up a seat in a midterm election with an unpopular Republican president in one of the bluest states in the country? Ermmmkayyyyy...

BREAKING NEWS ALERT:
Wednesday, 12 March 2025: Three-term incumbent United States Senator Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH) announcing she will NOT be seeking reelection to fourth six-year term in 2026 after 18 years of representing the Granite State in the United States Senate.

Expect the Republicans to be aggressively pushing former New Hampshire Governor
Christopher Sununu to run for the United States Senate.

BREAKING NEWS ALERT: United States Senator Dick Durbin (D-IL) announcing he will NOT be seeking reelection to sixth term in 2026 after 30 years representing the Land of Lincoln in the United States Senate.

BREAKING NEWS ALERT: United States Senator Thom Tillis (R-NC) announcing he will NOT be seeking reelection in 2026 after 12 years in the United States Senate. Expect massive pressure on former North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper to run for the Senate seat next year as the DSCC and DNC will be applying maximum pressure campaigns on Cooper, who has won 26 consecutive elections (both primary and general elections) in the Tar Heel State.

BREAKING NEWS ALERT: Former North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper announcing his campaign for the United States Senate in 2026. I should note Cooper is (26-0) in overall elections inside the Tar Heel State including primary and general elections dating back to 1986.

Monday, 18 August 2025: Former United States Senator Sherrod Brown (D-OH) announcing his candidacy for the upcoming 2026 special election for the United States Senate against incumbent United States Senator Jon Husted (R-OH). The winner of the 2026 special election will be up for a full six-year term in 2028.

Saturday, 23 August 2025: United States Senator Chuck Grassley (R-IA) not ruling out seeking reelection to ninth term in 2028. Grassley is hell-bent on trying to break the 48-year record of the late United States Senator Strom Thurmond (R-SC).

Gut feeling he's going to die in office.

As a former Iowan, I've always suspected he'd end up being carried out of the Senate in a pine box. The man has been in elective office since 1959, I can't imagine what else he even could do with his life at this point if he wanted to.

I should note Grassley will likely be carried out in a flag-draped casket.
