Upstate Ny Rolecall

Read my work, especially Will You Merry Me and also Whatever You Desire, and Not Today Satan, and you'll know exactly where I grew up. Ok, spoiler - It's Rochester. But if you read my other stories, you'll know where I spend my summers - Summer's Island is on the St Lawrence River (American side), where we still have a summer camp (my uptateres know what a 'camp' is) and The Right Wrong Person takes place in Bethel (near Woodstock) where I spent summers with my hippy grandmother. My mother's Wicked Game takes place at my Alma Mater, a central New York school that loves its oranges.

Now, if you’re a true New York Stater, you know that “upstate” really refers to the northern part. I was more Central New York girl, with a bit of Catskills in the mix, but summers on the river definitely counted as serious upstate.

I’m in California now for my profession. Still, the intimate memories of cold nights and crisp days (I try to forget the sweltering humidity of the summers) still lay the foundation for some of my more intense stories.

If you are a true New York stater, you know that when somebody says "Upstate," they are probably from NYC and they are referring to the Hudson Valley. If you are north of Albany, it's Northern NY, and if you are in the area between Plattsburgh and Watertown, you are in the North Country.. The Catskills is the Catskills, Syracuse and Rochester are Central NY or the Finger Lakes, the PA border is the Southern Tier, and Buffalo is Western NY.
