This whole fuckup appears to be the sole responsibility, not of Kosplay Kristi Noemm as I first suspected (Darn!) but instead the acting Commandant of the Coast Guard, Admiral Kevin Lunday. The first female commandant was jettisoned and "early retired" after Trump took the throne, and the replacement was a square jawed silver haired straight-out-of-central-casting guy who looked the part, and most importantly, had a peener and no vagina.
Here's where it gets good: Lunday was a graduate of the Coast Guard Academy in 1985, back when it was the sole surviving military bastion of military hazing. Academy hazing had been removed from West Point, Annapolis and the Air Force academy mostly in the 1970s....but the Coast Guard doubled down on hazing (not being subject to Defense Dept regulations as it was the red-headed bastard step-child of the Treasury department back then). This lasted for two fucking generations until around 2000.
When Congress realized just how routine hazing and raping at the Coast Guard Academy had gotten, it cracked down pretty hard on the CG. The Coast Guard realized how badly they had fucked up and came up with a well-received anti-hazing procedure and manuals. The Coast Guard now had the same level of professionalism as its big brothers, the Army Navy and Air Force.
Lunday's first act as acting Commandant was to revoke the Anti-Hazing procedures and manuals IN THEIR ENTIRETY.
This was a tremendous fuck up and indicative of Acting Admiral Lunday's poor judgment. Hazing was no longer against regulations, and if those regulations included bans on swastikas and nooses, well that's just the "cost of warfighting".
Certain members of Congress were informed of the de facto re-nazification of the Coast Guard and that was when the feces hit the fan.
Admiral Lunday was left to twist in the wind, Kristi Noem wouldn't return his phone calls, he was politically radioactive now. So he issued a thundering denunciation OF HIS OWN DIRECT ORDER, stating that the numbskull who gave that order was completely out of line, that the swastika was NEVAR to be accepted as a "potential symbol of hatred" etc etc and anyone who said otherwise was in violation of long standing Coast Guard policy! We good now, Secretary Noem, right?
That guy was and is completely unfit for command.
