The minotaur animal was designed to "chase" the aliens. They were evolved from a herd animal. Minotaur was "programed" to get close but miss with the tail spikes. The crew's human movements are different than the program, this explains Commander and Lt getting hit with spikes.

The rats are medical animals to repair injuries. They will leave once they are sure the injures are on the mend.

the butterflies are amusement ride animals. They can also be used for overwater jousting. If anyone gets close they can see the exoskeleton joust that is available.
