The spelling option is there in outlook but it is grayed out like that feature is disabled

In NotePad there is no tools, there are only:
File, Edit, Search and Help and it is not in any of those

In WordPad ther is only :
File, Edit, View, Insert, Format and Help

I don't have any of the Works Program on my Computer.

and anything that comes with those.

And anything I downloaded, which are mainly messangers and games.

The spell-check feature is active only if you have Word installed. That is the source of the spell check feature in Outlook Express.

You know, with all this talk about spelling, I completely overlooked the last line of Bri's original post. Bri, I hope you and the dog are feeling better. Even though it's ridiculously expensive over there, Ben & Jerry's is truly the best medicine. Or depending on the size of that chocolate bar, perhaps you've found a suitable alternative.

The spell-it v2.0 would work best but its nto free its only share ware

Forget about the CWordPad its almost 8mb, thats to much work.

I think you know, and I think I've said three times, that I'm not bitching about the odd typo, missed letter, or reversed spelling.

It's exactly the people you illustrate who drive me bonkers. I can only imagine it's 1000 times worse in a RPG.

Re: Spelling and grammar -- In this medium, the only clue any of us have to to the others is the written word. A sloppy, poorly spelled, ungrammatical post, especially as the norm for a poster, makes that person look less literate than they may actually be. If you are concerned about how you may be perceived, then spelling and grammar are important.

However, this forum is, for the most part, casual conversation and should not be subject to the same sort of rigorous standards something like a doctoral thesis should be. Typos, misspellings, and misused words shouldn't be grounds for disregarding the thoughts the author intended to convey.

Re: Trolls -- I'm constantly befuddled by the way so many trolls get exactly what they want from the board members. I am as outraged by the trolling of NSW's pregancy thread (and others) as anyone, but I refuse to feed the troll so he'll be encouraged to troll someone else.

If a troll post makes you angry, throw marshmallows at your screen, or smash crackers with a tenderizing mallet, but DON'T LET THE TROLL KNOW HE MADE YOU MAD!

Trolls don't hang around where they can't get a reaction. They expect flames and put-downs so such responses don't bother them -- such responses feed them by providing them with exactly what they want to receive. It may be satisfying to vent your frustrations by responding, but unless you really enjoy being angry at trolls, it accomplishes nothing.

This is a very simple principle, and a proven way to deal with trolls -- don't feed their sick egos and they go somewhere they can get a reaction. It's too bad this BB software doesn't have a "twit filter" to automatically bypass posts by people you don't want to read. You have to make a conscious effort to not respond on your own.

Sorry I'm late to the conversation, but I feel compelled to contribute my two cents worth. I consider it a matter of respect for the people to whom my posts are directed that I present my thoughts clearly, using good grammar and correct spelling. I don't always do either perfectly, but that's my intention. Were I to do a long post I'd compose it in Word and paste it into this little window. I also have American Heritage Dictionary on my hard drive and pull it up when I have a question about either spelling or meaning of a word.

Frankly, I generally don't hear profound or even incisive arguments coming from lazy minds. Using language well requires attention and care.

I couldn't agree more. Giving trolls attention is giving them energy that feeds their behavior! Ignore them.

Hey it's a grammar thread...

You know what's funny, I didn't know a damn thing about grammar until I started taking Spanish. Of course I knew how to put together a sentence, but I couldn't tell you if a word was in preterite, perfect, or imperfect tense. Now I can tell you all of that, but mostly only in Spanish.

Does anyone know how to say "pluscuamperfecto" in English?

DarlingBri I just wanted to let you know that I didn't take any offence about your post at all. But I did misunderstand it a bit.

I try my best when I post at this board, and otherwise write and chat in english, which by now actually seems more natural to me than to do it in Danish.

I have however never been very good at the grammar, so from time to time I just write it the way I think it, and hope it comes across in an understandable way.

I guess that the reason I do ok writing wise in English, is that I spend a year as an exchange student in Missouri back in 85/86. Since then and until I started to chat about 3 years or so ago, I have read a lot of books in English to keep my language skills up to speed.

I also try to catch the misspellings I do when I type, but I of course make them, often when I'm in doubt about something, and are to lazy to look the correct spelling up. And I still have problems when to use "of" and when it's "off"!! But I might learn that some day! lol

I'd just like to say that most of the people on the board who have English as their second language are phenomenonally good at it. It took me seven years of school to get my Spanish to where it is now, and I'm sure at times I can sound pretty garbled. I admire you all.

People who quote the original first post in its entirety and then comment with one or two sentences. This is especially irritating when they do so in the very next post! I believe we are all capable of reading, otherwise we wouldn't be here. No need to repeat what we can all read ourselves.

You spelled "parents" correctly in "Grandparents" and then misspelled it as "pareants." So you obviously can spell at least that one word correctly if you try. Not doing so is just laziness.

Its easy to push the quote button, but takes a little time to delete what isn't germane to the point being made. I sometimes wonder whether people simply don't know they can delete passages within a quote. But I agree with you completely. I tend to ignore posts with run-on quotes. I'll admit, however, that managing the HTML world to dissect a quote and comment piece by piece seems a bit daunting to me. I trust I'll learn if the circumstances demand that of me.
