I'm taking an antidepressant that causes some really crappy sexual side effects - difficult to orgasm and when i do, it's not so great---ugh!! i've heard of some studies where people (men and women) were given Viagara to combat the loss of libido. Have any women taken viagara? has anyone been prescribed viagara in conjunction w/ antidepressants to help boost sex drive?

Thanks for any info,

Don't even think about it, Sweety.

"Viagra is Pfizer's brand name for sildenafil citrate. It is chemically a selective inhibitor of Cyclic Guanosine Monophosphate - specific PDE5. After it is absorbed into the bloodstream, it functions to inhibit an enzyme called phosphodiesterase 5 (PDE5) which is found primarily in the penis. The enzyme, PDE5 breaks down cyclic GMP. Cyclic GMP is produced during sexual stimulation, leading to penis erection. The longer the cyclic GMP persists, increased blood flows to the penis, thereby generating an erection. "

Unless you have grown a penis over the last while it won't do much good. I searched the web and could find NO entry where Viagra had been tested on women. The side affects could be anywhere from nothing to very dangerous.

Talk to your doctor. I would guess that a change in your Antidepressant Meds could well be a better answer.

Im not advising anything here and im not telling you to try it out in any way or form....

But my ex girlfriend and i used to take half a viagra each before a marathon sesion. She used to get really wet and said the orgasms were a lot more intense.

I also know of other women who have tried it and nothing has happened!!

So its pot luck really....

My ex though on another note used to get crazy horny when she used to smoke weed/pot. She would be ripping at my clothes and screaming the house down... lol

Your best bet is talking to the docs though. Maybe change the anti'd's to something else. Who knows im not a doc! lol

Still going to try

Here is the link where i found a study that suggested viagra for women on antidephttp://www.healthyplace.com/communities/depression/news/viagra_women.aspressants. i knew i found it somewhere! i've seen a couple of other links as well, but don' feel like finding them before more coffee. i'm going to talk to my dr. today and it is going to be one embarrassing thing to ask for, but it can't hurt. i've already decided if i get a prescription for viagra, i'm going to take it this weekend before beginning any new antidepressant---that should make for one great weekend! My guess is that my dr. will only try a new medication and skip the viagra altogether - but it's worth a shot.

If i am lucky enough to try viagra, i'll let all enquiring minds know what its effects are.

Thanks for all your opinions,

Sorry hon,
I don't thing your read that whole thing. There are two problems with there. First, this was not a scientific study and no statistics about effeciveness, side affects, etc were given. This was a series of rather casual, "well, why don't you try this..." kind of study with no monitoring at all. Secondly, "several of the women" took the drug for up to 16 weeks before any affect was shown.

Get your head on straight. Viagra is NOT approved for women in the United States because it has not been shown to have any positive affects. On the other hand, lowered sexual function is the most comon side affect of men and women taking anti-depressent meds. Don't treat yourself. Let your doctor fix your meds and correct the problem.

First of all, here is the link again. i screwed it up the first time: http://www.healthyplace.com/communities/depression/news/viagra_women.asp

Secondly, Jenny, i did read it carefully - it says that the women took the viagra for up to 16 weeks--not that it took that long to feel its effects. you're right that it may not be the most scientific study, ad it is a few years old. But it says that the majority of the women who took viagra reported that their sexual problems were "much" or "very much" improved.

Yes, i know i need to talk to my dr. who very well may not prescribe me viagra in the first place. i guess i can just try a different antidepressant---but the ones that haven't had many sexual side effects don't work for me. i know that happiness can't come from a pill, nor can sexual gratification--i'm just very frustrated w/ the catch-22. it seems that i can be miserable/suicidal/depressed, etc, but have a great orgasm (yes, that certainly takes away the depression for a bit!), or i can choose to feel calmer, more even-tempered and that maybe even life is worth living, but i can't cum---fucking awful set of choices. i'm just trying to see if there's a way around it.

SesameStreet - thanks for your suggestion - i will look into viagel and see if that's something that can help.

Femsub, there's a great thread called "Depression, Anxiety, Panic Attacks, etc." by quoll in the HT Cafe. I'd suggest checking it out and asking how others have dealt with the sexual side effects of meds--you never know what might be out there and help.

I wouldn't spend money on those "arousal gels/creams." Most of them are outrageously expensive, and help because you rub them into your clit for a few minutes. Between masturbation and the placebo effect, no wonder they're reportedly working!

There are MANY, MANY informative threads on Viagra and the other ED meds around here. One of the better ones was on the front page in here recently, so you could probably find it with little effort by going through a few pages of How To. Otherwise, try an Advanced Search for Viagra in the title and all dates.

Best of luck with the doc! :rose:

Sorry, but I have to disagree on the arousal creams for women. The ones that contain testosterone are very effective.

If a woman has a testosterone deficiency, many physicians start by prescribing a testosterone cream applied vaginally twice weekly. Dr. Vliet usually starts her patients on 1.5-2 mg of testosterone per day, in capsules or a cream or lotion rubbed into the skin. Side effects of testosterone may include: anxiety or irritability, dark hairs on the chin or upper lip, excess body hair, oily skin and acne. If these side effects occur with testosterone therapy, your dosage may need to be adjusted.

Raising the issue
If you're noticing a decrease in your sex drive or energy level, talk to your doctor, she advises, but be aware that some physicians are not comfortable or knowledgeable in addressing the issue of testosterone deficiency and waning sex drive in women.
