Looking at two large apartment buildings under construction over the last week, the carpenters, painters, drywallers, bricklayers, concrete workers and site workers are almost completely immigrants. Gringos don't seem to want the work, or if they are working in those trades, it's as managers - someone to go to the weekly progress meetings, to deal with ownership and upper management, and to keep the paperwork monster satisfied. The mechanical trades - plumbing, HVAC and electrical - are still primarily gringos, for the time being.


Sputnik I terrified the West, especially the US, and we noticed that we had a lot of liberal arts degrees and fewer science and engineering degrees. I'm back to whittlin' . . . .

For me, writing is like letting the fantasies in my head out to play. I get to watch them in real time, and polish them a bit when they get too fuzzy around the edges, and put them down on paper (or electrons as the case may be) for others to enjoy if they choose.

Writer's block happens a lot. I give myself a bit of time to let the well of creativity fill up again. If that doesn't get me back to writing, I'll wait a bit more. If there's still nothing flowing then I sit down and write something I'm fairly certain will be garbage and deleted in the near future. However, the act of trying to write stimulates my underlying creativity and it's not very long before I'm off and writing again.

Bad guys are important to the plot. I just make sure that everyone is clear on who the bad guy is right from the beginning, or at least by the end of Chapter 3. Sort of. Because nobody likes a plot spoiler.

My current effort has twin bad guys who are going to be getting their comeuppance in another chapter or 2. Hint for those who don't know better; DO NOT mess around with the engagement ceremony of a woman who truly knows how to swing a sword. You will NOT like what happens.

A 20-year-old North Carolina woman was reportedly assaulted and set on fire by three unknown assailants on Dec. 16. The report comes as a woman was burned alive on the New York subway with an illegal immigrant was arrested for the crime

The attackers poured gasoline all over Ashanti Downey’s body and lit the highly flammable liquid with a cigarette before fleeing the scene, Harnett County Sheriff Wayne Coats reported in a Facebook post. Police are still looking for the suspects.

“Ashanti Downey was walking in the area of NC 27 West and Barbecue Church Road when three unknown individuals doused her with gasoline and lit her on fire with a cigarette,” the Sherriff said.

An ambulance rushed Downey to emergency where she was diagnosed with second and third degree burns on her right side. Medical personnel at Central Carolina Hospital in Sanford, NC reported the crime to the Harnett County Sheriff’s Office at about 7 p.m. Downey was walking along a local highway on her way to a dollar store when she was brutally attacked.
