We COULD have a national ID card

It could be keyed to a file in a national database. That file would show your status as a citizen or lawful resident. The same card also would also serve as your driver's license, if you are licensed. It would also serve as your voting registration (automatic, you are registered to vote, if legally eligible, just by having the card). And that file would include every interaction you ever have had with government -- birth certificate, school records, arrest records, tax returns -- all available at a keystroke to the cop who pulls you over.

"I hope you know this will go down in your permanent record."

It WILL! :)

The Information Age makes all this possible. It would simplify, make a lot of things more efficient and convenient, especially for LEOs.

Any reason, well, not to?

Of course, you can always LOSE a card. Maybe a barcode tattoo . . . And just for fun, every single ID number should begin with "666"! :)

See, this would satisfy those who demand ID to vote . . .

But they still wouldn't like it, because it means automatic universal voter registration.

Of course, just because you have a national ID does not mean you have to show it when a cop asks.

That's a whole other discussion.

I agree to national ID if of course, you're automatically registered to vote, and these IDs are provided to ALL citizens entirely free of charge, always. Always. Never any fees, ever, ever, ever.

I also agree that every noncitizen legally in the country needs to be issued such an ID and that their employers need to register them as legal migrant workers.

And if they are illegally employed, we need to fine them an increasing amount of the total value of the business until they get bought out.

Start at 1 percent of the total value of the business when fined.

Next infraction, 5 percent.

Next, 10 percent. Until the government owns the business.

that will stop undocumented workers completely.

Of course because this entirely ends the nonsense about migrant workers taking our good paying jobs and houses and voting illegally, Republicans will not implement. Democrats have tried, and Republicans always vote against it.

Bipartisan legislation was enacted before Trump was in office about borders and immigration. Trump rejected it because he doesn't WANT the country's issues to be fixed, he wanted to campaign against it.

Now, he uses it as an excuse to destroy elections, deport U.S. citizens and have brownshirts murder Americans and visitors alike.

No trial, just execution by white supremacists in masks getting paid with your tax dollars.

We could solve the issues in this country, we really could. As soon as people stop fucking voting for Republicans.

Why are we constantly looking to solve a problem that literally doesn't exist. In-person voter fraud which is the only thing that a national ID would prevent is infinitesimal. Just look up the numbers

Not quite. A card would show your status as a citizen or legally resident noncitizen -- and a cop who pulled you over could demand to see it. If have no card, you could be arrested and deported for that lack alone.

Now, whether that is a solution to any actual PROBLEM is debatable. But it is a practical USE for the card.

If they follow the law and allowed you to defend yourself before they kicked you out of the country you don't need a national ID card

For these purposes, the card is simply a way of identifying those who should be subject at all to that process. It also gives the DOCUMENTED immigrant something he can flash to make ICE move on.

Sounds like something tried by Germany in the 1930s.

Wow...a national ID card. So...like a social security card!
And a passport.

Driving licenses are used as state ID, so the federal government would begin driver testing, or it would add a new and extra level of documentation for extra cost, so drivers and taxpayers would then be paying for a license and a national card. We are more likely to move in the other direction, with the federal government doing less and letting states decide how much carding they want to do. The gray area is territories without states' rights.

The UNITED STATES, all caps, is a corporation owned by the Vatican. If you are a UNITED STATES CITIZEN you are an employer of said corporation with no rights. Fascinating.

So in red states a MAGA rep at the voting booth will scan your card and say, "Nope, it's invalid!" if your skin happens to be too dark.
