What do you want from your writing?

Update: The What became clear today. I know what that What is. How to go about the What? No idea. I know it means starting all over. Again. That's all I know. But it's okay.

It's not just starting over. It's starting over with more experience behind you. That's more than ok. :)

Yeah I guess you're right about that. It's nice to finally get a clear vision of what to do. A place to go. Something more specific to aim for.

Oh: nag nag nag nag nag nag nag nag nag :D

It's beautiful, Chip. You should try to get to where you feel it's done. :rose:

Tore up the carpet in the nursery to find what appears to be black mold. Lotsa housework to do before this baby appears, still don't know if it's a boy or girl. Thanks for asking :)

My man, Johnny!

I can't remember if I knew you were going to be a dad. I think so, but just in case not here's a

(Congratulations.)

Have you seen those cartoon strips where the characters talk in bubbles over their heads? Well I kinda feel like that at the moment .... all those little bubbles congregating and popping occasionally. Chatter chatter chatter above my head and none of them making much sense but carrying on as if nothing unusual is happening

I mean this to be a slightly different question from the typical "why do you write?" which shows up here periodically. And I've deliberatively used the word "writing" rather than "poetry" in case some of the AH types want to comment. Poetry, fiction, plays, whatever—I'm just curious what it is you want from your writing. Partly, I think, I want to know how others feel because I am no longer sure what I want out of my own poems.

I started writing poems reasonably seriously with the idea that writing them would perhaps help me understand reading poems better—particularly poems by contemporary and near-contemporary poets. While I think it's helped somewhat in that regard, I'm generally still pretty clueless in reading, oh, Lowell or Pound or Jorie Graham. But I've learned a lot about poetry, so it has been fairly successful overall.

For a while, I thought a goal was to get some of my poems published, with eventually getting something published in one of the small literary magazines that are the traditional market for poetry. I started out pretty well on that, placing poems with various online journals, but lately I've really lost interest in publication as a goal. I guess I no longer know what the point of it would be.

So I'm kind of adrift at the moment for some kind of goal or meaning to writing. I still do it, because I enjoy it in and of itself, but I've kind of lost whatever reasons I had for doing it as a way of accomplishing something else.

So I'm curious. What do the rest of you want from your writing, if anything? Fame? Fortune? A Pulitzer Prize? Relief from inner demons? Some smooth, sexy lines to use to pick up girls/guys? What?

I wrote a poem at... 14 or 15, that a teacher thought was so good she thought I plagiarized it. The school called my parents, my parents grilled me and then we had a meeting with the teacher and the school. I didn't plagiarize it. It was my own thing because that's what I did in high school. However, those series of moments made it so difficult for me to write poetry again ... even now, I second guess myself ... has it been said, has it been written? I need to dumb it down and make sure I'm not getting ideas from other places. The experience haunts me, which is why I am trying to get my game on back here at the PH. Nevertheless, I think I'm a better prose writer than a poetic one. What do I want from my writing? Well, I just want to not have so many ideas, I just want to sit and write just one idea and complete it in full. It's not that I don't. I write ideas for others everyday. I just want to really grasp my characters and write something that satisfies me.

That sounds like a lousy experience. I don't get why people are expected to stop copying others at some point. Children are master copiers. It is how we learn the language, so why SHOULDN'T we borrow from other sources as we learn this language called poetry? (I know you didn't copy CharleyH, but I'm just sayin'.)

I think mimicking others is a good way to use writing as a form of reception.

That is what I want from my poetry:

To feel what others feel. And also to let others know what I feel.

I agree with you. I didn't mimic anyone, though, which is probably why I thought the poem quite crap ...from what I recall? I still do - lol.

it made me really angry reading what happened to you, charley  damned teacher should have checked it out first before shouting her misplaced suspicions the way she did. a kid writing well is something to celebrate, encourage, nurture - i'm kind of amazed you went on the write more and weren't entirely put off by her attitude! many would have folded, never to put pen to page again or risk raising their heads above the parapets in case they got shot. you have a stubborn streak that's served your creativity well, m'dear

I was stoned through most of high school, and so it was all 'whatever' to me. Nevertheless, I did get her (her as in teacher) back the next year. I had a history class and the teacher asked us to write a paper on the life and times of people in the Medieval times. I wrote a paper for him, in the guise of a story. He gave me an 'A' in pencil form. I 'lightly' erased the A and handed in the same thing to my English teacher. How could she not give me an A for the story? Self-plagiarism! Well, not really, but I did get an A with a plus.

I got banned from writing quizzes on a certain website for plagiarising myself, personaly I don't think they believed I wrote the original as it was in my former married name and that's even more of an insult. Whatever the reason they were not prepared to discuss it at all and I was banned and that's that!
