What does it mean, "lipstick lesbians"?

I've never heard the term "lipstick lesbian" used to describe a straight girl. What you're describing sounds more like bicurious to me! "Lipstick lesbian" usually does mean a full blown lesbian, the debate is mostly over what kind...

Ditto

well, i have. like i mentioned in my first post lipstick lesbian has been used to describe "fake lesbians" who will make out with other women just to get a rise out of the boys. it's not the traditional definition, but it works.

we need a word for those fakers besides "dumb sluts", damnit.

I always like "Hag"

Fag Hag

Boi Hag

and now Lipstick Hag.

or maybe Chapstick Hag, for femme straight girls that kiss on butchie lesbians.

I’ve heard the term used in a mildly pejorative sense – as in describing a lesbian who by being fashion conscious has bought into the heterocentric view of what makes a woman attractive.
All in all, it’s a silly term – the kind of shorthand that people use instead of taking the time to think.

Here's something that struck me as funny.

I've never thought of lipstick lesbians as being lesbians at all. I've always thought of them as bi (or porn actors) without even really giving it any thought.

And now I think it's a personal stereotype I've created for myself to believe she (and her partner, or course) could possibly invite me in. I have this thing for lesbian/bi women and red-haired girls... I may have mentioned it before. I have all kinds of stereotypes and preconceived notions and conditioned thoughts and responses... I'm not a very good bisexual man I think.

Is bisexual a member of the gay community? Okay, sorry... off the subject.

Heh, that is funny in a weird sort of way. I don't consider myself a lipstick lesbian personally, but others might (despite the fact that I never wear makeup!) . And yet I do take umbrage at the suggestion that a lesbian must be bisexual just because she looks straight and/or girly. I guess it helps that at least you realize it's a personal perspective and not necessarily what other people would think!

I would say a bisexual is a member of the queer community, or the GLBT community. If they choose to participate in the gay community - by virtue of the fact that they are in a same-sex relationship, or simply because they want to - then sure, they can be a member of the gay community.

I agree, but for the fact that as a rule, Bi people (well.. ME) aren't straight.

Yes, I think I've come to accept that I don't exactly walk the straight line. It's a huge thing for me to think of myself as bisexual, and it would be huger still to tell someone else. I am comfortable with my sexuality, but uncomfortable within society's perception of it. Forgive me for getting off the subject, but I'm examining this aspect of myself closely for the first time.

So back to the topic... It seems "Lipstick Lesbian," is a term created and used largely by people who do not consider themselves to be such. Whaddya suppose that means?

I'm working on adjusting my personal perspectives. I also sleep well at night because I choose to believe the average male penis is five and three-quarter inches, and I know damn well I have a good six and a half.

Does this mean I'm invited to stay? :rose:

Hey, it ain't called GLBT Chatter for nothing! :D

Thanks, Etoile. You rock!

So back to the subject... sort of. Has anyone heard a term that classifies (I almost said "describes" -- Die, inner bias, die!) men in a similar fashion? Or is Lipstick Lesbian just a term we use to describe lesbian women we'd like to think we have a shot at?
