What I am doing wrong, or ineptly, off-kilter, whatever. . .

:( Very true for me. I didn't want to post a new threaed but some will see this. She's slowly recovering, trying to gain weight (really big effort for her, the tiny Tim of Lit.) She fears her humour got taken out in the surgery, but I think it will return. At any rate, she doesn't want to come back (here) without it. I have faith in her though.

OK, if you believe in Maths, clap your hands (you know, like for Tinkerbell :) .

Perdita :)

Where's min with her handclapping smilies when you need her? I will be glad to donate weight to Maths, I have some to spare:rolleyes:

CLAP! CLAP! CLAP!

Get well soon maths!!!!!!!!

Clap, clap.

I send some weight across the ocean since I had some to spare.

You know, sometimes these intellectual articles can blind you with their apparent brilliance so that you don't notice that they really don't say anything new. Just because something’s said well, it doesn’t mean that there’s anything new to talk about.

I’m not talking about P’s posts, but a few weeks ago I came across an intellectual article on porn that I was terribly impressed with, and I posted excerpts of it here. The author said things so well and with such an amount of that intellectual gloss that’s so impressive, that it took me a long time (and a lack of repsonses in the thread) to realize that she wasn’t really saying anything that all of us didn’t already know. Basically she said that porn tests the bounds of what’s acceptable in a culure. Well fucking duh! So what’s there to say about that?

A lot of intellectual writing conforms to that description that was first applied (I think) to the discipline of semiotics, about which it was said, “What’s true in the field is already obvious, and whatever isn’t obvious is unprovable.”

Clap, Clap, Clap!
(For Maths, hope she feels better soon, she is sorely missed.)

Perdi,

If that nipple gets any closer I am going to bite it! I am not joking either!
____________

In response to your request. I have read most all the threads in the AH even the ones I do not particularly care for. I can say I have not missed too many.

I read your threads, more often I even follow the comments. I do not always feel I wish to inject my opinions. Some topics I do not feel comfortable with, other topics are out of my knowledge. While some I feel I can add too in a constructive or destructive way.

Nothing personal to any one. I can despise someone, and still I will post on their thread. I also have many close friends here I never post on their comments.

If I do make a post, I always look to view the responses. Sometimes I feel moved not to reply for whatever reason.

The time and effort you place into a thread is appreciated by me. If that makes any difference. I notice and know a thread by perdita is worth taking a look at. I know before I ever open it, there will be some kind of reading involved.

There are several posters of threads I lock in on first when visiting. Not because of the person, but because of the content they are known for posting.

Still I do not reply to every thread. Yes I have an opinion, but many of times I can guess my real opinion is not wanted. Mom always said, "If you have nothing nice to say, say nothing at all."
I guess I am not a nice person in my thoughts, cause I have not had much to say in a while.

The other thought is I am pretending to play golf. So, I am trying real hard to keep my post count low.

Perdi,

It has been a long time you will never get me to release!

Really I wanted you to know I do read what you post. Many times I am in that list of hundreds of views. But biting my tongue as I know I can be overly opinionated. Sometimes that is good other times it is a thread killer.

Phil, I appreciate all you said. Now let go or I'll put up one of my Day of the Dead Avs. Have a :p . P.

Sorry P, I just have not had much time on Lit in the past couple of weeks....***** seems to have taken over!! I would still keep your style. Each one of us is unique and in so being have something valueable to offer. To change to suit or fit the crowd then breeds mediocrity, a pet hate of mine, and also does not get the questions in your head answered or discussed. I find much the same as you, sometimes in Talk I post a thread that takes off immediately, other times it rests and sinks then when I have forgotten all about it, is resurrected by someone who did not see it the first time. Is all about timing, both ours and the other posters. Keep being you....I find that blend of humour and intellect stimulating myself.:)

Sorry, 'Dita. Coming in late here to pretty much echo what has already been said. That's a common occurrence for me and one of the main reasons I don't post to a lot of your threads. I don't mind quoting someone and posting, "What he/she said!" , but I try to only do that on the sillier threads. Especially after the silly-vs-serious-thread threads. I know (hope?) it was not anyone's intent, but I'm now intimidated out of posting to any of the serious threads unless I feel I have something of any kind of value to add, which is pretty much never.

Case in point would be this thread. The reason I'm posting is to add this:

minsue,

Don't every be intimidated by a "serious" political or intellectual post here at the AH. The "brain game" is simple once you learn how to craft your responses. For instance, if you disagree but don't want to get into an extended hair-pulling session, just type, in a rather imperious manner, "Says WHO?"

Should you be ambivalent or don't give a damn, but like the poster and feel called upon to respond, all you need to type is: "Maybe" or if so inclined, "Interesting." (note: For this purpose, "fascinating" has its adherents. But beware; its use may encourage the original poster to ask you to elaborate on your favorable impression of their words or wisdom.)

I hope this has helped assuage your anxieties. :)

Minsue,

I've quoted you above, for Maths, because I couldn't do the emoticons. You can, so I have borrowed from you.
