What interesting research have you carried out relating to recent stories you have written, or are writing?

Recently looked up all of the medications that could cause someone to lactate and what their likelihoods of doing so would be. Included which diagnoses they'd be used for, their likelihood of causing the side effect, how much would be produced, etc.

Trying to give a nod to the folks who followed me after favoriting my Christmas story by giving another story (still haven't gotten any inspiration for a good sequel) and didn't want to have to worry about writing a baby into the tale somewhere. Wanted to make it as least somewhat plausible before I started messing with reality at least a little.

You might also want to look into spontaneous lactation. I'm honestly not sure if it's a thing but I've encountered it in my reading from time to time.

From what I was reading, it only really happens as a dribble AND is typically something only seen if you've already had a child. Have you seen it mentioned in those who are childless?

Yeah, I like reading first time stories sometimes, and occasionally the virgin will be mentioned as having been lactating since they started puberty. Like I said, not sure how realistic it is, but people do write about it.

Although, one of the stories was her being brought into a cult as a sort of fountain of youth because of her magical virginal milk. So that one obviously wasn't trying to be realistic.

Odd that it would be me 🤭 , but I read something recently about transwomen inducing lactation to a level to support a healthy baby(obviously not theirs, but...)

Oh yea - you can definitely do it intentionally with the use of hormones, pumps, etc. I've heard of lesbian couples doing the same so that both were able to breastfeed after one carried the baby to term.

I wanted this to be entirely unintentional for story reasons.

Yea, definitely not going for magical cult milk, though that is an interesting angle. Worth looking into, though. I'll have to take a look at that angle!

If it helps, I went from 260 pounds to 185 pounds and got left with the gift of nice C cup breastessessessessess(not man boobs, actual mammary tissue and all that), so, I guess anything is possible.
And no, I am to complaining.

Here I am being like "oh yea, I have friends who" with my head so far in the air I didn't realize I had personal experience talking right at me. My apologies but heck yea - that helps!

I'm reading it now but I have to take reading long stories in slow bites because my brain is stupid. What a great start, though! I'm definitely wrangling my brain to make it to the end here!

My current obsession is a sci-fi story where the main character is now the "adaptability specialist" on board an exploration ship that specializes in worlds that might have intelligent life.
So I'm having to do a lot of researching to get planets that are plausibly ambiguous about the presence of intelligent life from orbit - underground atmospheres, bioluminescent swarms, weather patterns that don't quite fit. Trying to find situations that are just extreme enough that a delicate species wouldnt be able to handle it, but a human in the right gear (but minimal - oxygen mask, wetsuit, warm clothes, goggles, not only pressure suits) would be comfortable.
(Humans are Space Australians trope)

Oh now that does sound interesting. Was it only banned after the conquest, or was it own its way out, with some marrying and some not?
To coin a phrase, it's complicated. Different denominations had different rules and things changed slowly, drifting towards complete celibacy. It was shortly after the Conquest that the hammer came down bigtime. Oddly enough, much of the push was not based on theology, but rather on a fear of priests passing on church property (which could be enormously costly) to their offspring. In my case, if I go forward with the WIP, it would merely concern a Saxon priest and his wife. Time will tell.

Oh! I've got a new one.
MC's boyfriend is the chef-owner of a fancy restaurant, where the gimmick is that they use different flavors/styles of fancy salt with the food.
So I am learning a lot about salt.
You know, so that the one throwaway paragraph where the MC helps set the tables is accurate. *eyeroll at self*

Well...so far I've learned about mesquite-smoked salt, Hawaiian volcanic salt, and a bunch of ones harvested off the coast of Franch and England.

In the current scene in progress he is serving grilled trout with beurre blanc sauce, with Fleur de Sel de Guérande served as an accompanying seasoning.

I'm making myself hungry!

I spend way too much time researching food and recipes. my MMC in my original series was a gourmet chef as his hobby. And a lot of my other scenes in lots of other stories take place over meals. It's definitely one of the fun parts of the "job".

We need a Lit Cookbook. So many of us write food into our work there would be plenty of recipes to use.
The recipe for something that featured in one of your stories along with a brief excerpt from the story.

That is a good idea!

Would be a little like Nanny Ogg's "The Joye of Snacks"!
(There is a real Nanny Ogg's Cookbook but it appears to be "humorous anecdotes and etiquette advice" which is...not what the original was supposed to be, lol)

We should start a recipe thread.

There used to be one; I remember posting a recipe for Mexican-style black beans in it. Can't find the thread anymore, though.

If you want to eventually own it, I will help you get it off the ground. Just not this month. Bug me mid-January about it.

In my experience the Guerande salt doesn't really add anything that plain sea salt doesn't. But I've had salt from the Camargue that had a delightful peaty flavour.

Smoked salt is good, and volcano salt has a hint of sweetness (the one I had was from Iceland). You can also get various herbed salts in Iceland, for example seaweed salt. Balsamic salt is fantastic for preparing meat. And I have a chocolate salt from Salzburg that I haven't tried yet.

One that I've thought would be nice but I've never seen for sale anywhere would be paprika salt - either smoked paprika or sweet paprika.
