What is it about military pageantry that is so moving?

I just watched the service for Jimmy Carter at the capital. I was grateful for the military discipline that forced us to come together. I'm posting this question here because the military pageantry evokes in me some of the feelings that my erotic them, "male surrender" evokes.

Does this ring a bell for anyone?

Note: My political leanings would not suggest that I would respond well to military anything.

I like seeing difficult things done well.

Yngwie Malmsteen on guitar, Archie Gemmill scoring in the '78 World Cup, or the Old Guard doing a burial: all of those things are satisfying to me.

In a past life I was a soldier. For awhile, I involved myself in the kind of drill that involves flipping and catching thrown rifles, usually with a partner. It's nothing but repetition, self-discipline, and pride in what you're doing. I'm not sure I understand the reference to "male surrender;" that's not how it strikes me at all, though obviously everyone is going to react in their own way.

Nah. Few people would. But I like the feedback about difficult things done well!
