Now Jenny AA is from Oregon and he says that there is alot more than that! He has sent pics of beautiful flowers, theres the beach and coastline, the desert in the east, the mountains, Mt Hood, Tillamook cheese, lots of waterfalls, the Hunted was filmed there. where most of the christmas trees are grown. Funny, he never mentioned that there were nude beaches!

Carrie--been a while since we crossed paths here...

As for my location...Maryland's official motto is "The Free State"--anyone know why?

I also just read that the next county over, Prince George's county, held its last tobacco auction--which at one point was the state's largest cash crop!

Here's a few Oregon facts...

Our deepest lake is Crater Lake. At 1,932 feet, it's the deepest lake in the U.S.
Multnomah Falls is the highest waterfall in Oregon, at 620 feet.

Oregon's geyser is Old Perpetua. It is 60 feet high, and is located on the edge of Lakeview. Oregon's deepest gorge is the Hell's Canyon - 7,900 feet. It's located between Oregon and Idaho on the Snake River.

99% of the hazelnuts (Hazelnut is the state nut--LOL) in the world are grown in the Willamette Valley and 95% of the Bartlett pears are grown here, also--sorry my ag background coming out again.

We have the second most wineries in the US--behind California.

There are lots more facts, but these are just a few. AA

Oh yeah...and Rooster Rock IS a nude beach!

Other films shot here include Short Circuit & sequel, Kindergarten Cop, Animal House, One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest, just to name a few!
Lauren Tewes (Julie from Love Boat) was born in Forest Grove and Lindsay Wagner (Bionic Woman) is originally from Portland.

>Edited to add: Reeder Beach on Sauvie Island is also a nude beach!

Thanks all for all the responses! I thought this might be a good thread to re-incarnate!

I was very impressed

with Toni's and Oman's renditions of the uniqueness of their respective states. In fact, I was SCREAMING by the time I finished their posts.

There has to be a link somewhere between the TX petrified buffalo hairball and the NB "Testicle Festival." I mean, really, I would be proud to escort my woman to a testical festival.....I can hear her now........."Omigod, there's uncle Harry........."

Ok.........two shorties.......

The region where I live in PA is known for having the largest cluster of covered bridges in the US. Yep, there are even tour buses going from one bridge to another, though they never crosss them.

When I lived in Hampton Roads, VA; it has 5 bridge tunnels, the most in one area of the US. Also has numerous bases for all five services along with NASA and the CIA.

Okay........there alot to say about California, so I'll only talk about my little part of it.

I live in the largest county in the United State.

The city is most famous for the Roy Rogers Museum (although it's now closed and moving to Branson, MO.

There were alot of westerns filmed here, but I really can't name them.

The sound barrier was broken here.

It's one of the few places were I can go from the desert, to the mountain (skiiing or snow boarding) to the beach within an hour or each other.

You are never more than six miles from a lake or stream in Michigan
Lake Superior is the largest freshwater lake in the world, 31,820 square miles.
More than 90 percent of the Upper Peninsula's land is forested. (I live here ):D
State name: Michigan's name is derived from the two Indian words michi-gama meaning "great lake."
State motto: Si quaeris peninsulam amoenam circumspice (if you seek a pleasant peninsula, look about you).
Michigan leads the nation in the production of tart cherries, blueberries, and dry edible beans.
Highest recorded temperature: 112 F on July 13, 1936
Lowest recorded temperature: -51 F on February 9, 1934
Counties: 83 counties, 68 in the Lower Peninsula and 15 in the Upper Peninsula. 40 border the great lakes

Yoopers are people who willingly live above the Bridge...Trolls are people from Downstate...here is something we have to sum it all up! :D
Da Creation of Da Upper Peninsula
In the beginning dere was nuttin'.
Den...

On da FIRST day, God created da UP.
On da SECOND day, He created da partridge, da deer, da bear, da fish, and da ducks.

On da THIRD day, He said "Let dere be Yoopers to roam da Upper Peninsula."

On da FOURTH day, God created da udder world down below.

On da FIFTH day, He said "Let dere be trolls to live in da udder world down below."

On da SIXTH day, He created da bridge, so da trolls would have a way to get to heaven.

God saw it was good and on da SEVENTH day, He went huntin'.

OTHER FUN THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT THE U.P.
One day it's warm, the rest of the year it's cold.

People who have say "I have half a mind to go to the U.P." have all the right equipment.

Nearly 30% of residents in Schoolcraft County in the U.P. are graduates of the sixth grade.

If you fly a straight line from Sault Ste. Marie to Ironwood, you'll see a lot of trees.

Dollar Bay in the U.P. was named after the annual salary in the area.

The U.P. is the supplier of mosquitos to the free world.

There are two seasons in the U.P. -- Swat and Shovel.

People in the U.P. wear boots because they are in style - not because there is snow on the ground.

Michigan's U.P. was never considered as a site for the state capital; however, it does have a town named Ralph.

Hi Roman...The nickname "Free State" was created by Hamilton Owens, editor of the newspaper, the Baltimore Sun . In 1923, Georgia Congressman William D. Upshaw, a firm supporter of Prohibition, denounced Maryland as a traitor to the Union for refusing to pass a State act against the use of alcohol. Mr. Owens thereupon wrote a not-quite-serious editorial entitled "The Maryland Free State." He argued that Maryland should withdraw from the Union rather than prohibit the sale of liquor. Mr. Owens decided not to print the article. He popularized the nickname, however, in later editorials.
I admit...I had to look it up on the 'net.
Thanks for stopping by..:)
