What next? How do we build a better America?

The first and highest priority should be to fight wealth inequality and destroy the plutocracy.

That will take care of pretty much everything else that is wrong with America. Even the stupid, pointless culture war will go away if we destroy the plutocracy.
Another dead thread.

Harris and Trump are both as mad as a hatter. Nobody who is sane should be voting for either one of them.
Harris is a mainstream Dem. Centrist pro-corporate politics, no different from Clinton's, Obama's or Biden's. She is entirely too dull to be crazy.

So who's a sane choice? Stein?
Yes. Democrats are predictably being very undemocratic in getting her off the ballot paper in some states, including my own.

No chance that I'm voting Democratic in any way at this election. Genocide must be punished at every level.

I wouldn't worry too much about engaging with dear Rebecca. She supports Russian Imperialism and really doesn't like America.
Your smears are very typical of the crazy bourgeois liberal party that you support.

Truth hurts.
Pathetic attitude on your part. The Democrats deserve a heavy defeat, for their warmongering, for their denial of inflation and gaslighting us by saying the economy is "good", for their identity politics divisiveness, and for forcing Jill Stein off the ballot paper in some states.

She's got to come in and spread her anti-American and pro-Putin Imperialism perspectives.

It's sad how obvious it is that she doesn't even like America.
You like the America of the billionaire class. Admit it.

The dirty secret the Republican politicians don't want you to know: they hope the Democrats do legalize abortion again. They don't care at all about it. It's not about trying to take a woman's rights and it's not about trying to save a baby. When they can play the victim and the supposedly oppressed side they get more support and more votes and more money. They are pissed Trump actually got it changed and took their political power card away. Republican voters care (they aren't trying to take away women's rights either so that argument is stupid and doesn't work) but they only strongly care when they are fighting to change it. It's all political theater. Democrats are loving this now - they get to finally use that flamethrower the GOP has been using for decades.

Look, I am done with this culture war BS, which both Democrat and Republican leaders want to fight over to distract from the mega rich ripping us off.

I'm pro-choice because it's the only position on abortion that allows each individual to act according to their conscience. The Republican attitude towards abortion in the 1970s, in the Nixon-Ford era, was "It's a matter between the woman and her doctor, and nothing to do with government".

A position that they abandoned to curry favor with Jerry Falwell and they've never looked back.

How to improve America?

Break it up. Have an amicable divorce now rather than a pissed-on fish divorce later.

America is not a 21st Century nation. It isn't even a 20th Century one.

It more closely resembles a 19th Century Empire like the Austro-Hungarian Empire or a 15th Century one like the Holy Roman Empire. That is it covers a large geographical area that contains many different cultures, languages, and religions. Most of whom do not like each other very much and blame each other for their problems. It's an inherently unstable organism always on the verge of exploding.

Breaking it up into smaller parts would help stabilize things and allow the constituent parts to work towards futures where they won't be able to blame others for failing.

Balkanizing the country ain't gonna help.

Never helped the Balkans, either -- they would have been better off under one empire, whether it were Ottoman or Austrian.

It's going to happen sooner or later, no need to rush it. Just as Russia and China will collapse once the centrifugal forces holding them together fail. There's no need to rush it, though.

I've seen speculation about Russia breaking up, and it certainly makes sense WRT ethnically non-Russian regions such as Chechnya. But I've never even heard of a movement for an independent Novgorod or an independent St. Petersburg.

Likewise with China. Tibet or Xinjiang might want to break away, but "China Proper," the Han-majority core, is a real nation-state.

I'd advocate for something easier and a lot simpler to start.

Get on with Trump's trials as a prelude to regaining a semblance of justice and belief in the DOJ.

Then, move on to fixing healthcare as other countries have done. There is no reason we should not be able to achieve universal healthcare for all. Even education, for that matter.

Strengthen the military and the ability to produce munitions to support our troops. Make their lifestyles one to be admired and aspired to with reasonable incomes, healthcare, housing, etc.

Start passing legislation that secures the border, preferably without a 1,000-mile wall on the southern one. It was Regan, after all, who famously said, 'Tear down that wall.' It worked well enough in Berlin, so putting high-tech stuff in place should be a part of the process. [Forget the shit about moats and alligators!]

End the filibuster.

Create a bi-partisan committee to formulate a new election process and begin gathering state-by-state votes to make it a Constituational revision.

Oh, and mark your calendars to vote in 2028 for Harris' second term! :)

Assuming that Donald Trump is prevented from seizing power, what should our top priorities be as a nation?

As evidenced from some of my other posts on this board, there are two things I think would immediately make America a much better place:
  1. Legalize abortion
  2. Build a national high-speed rail network
Use this thread to say what you think America should do after we don't have to spend all our energy fighting Donald Trump. Please keep it positive. Don't worry about politics. This is an aspirational wish list.
I agree with #1, but #2 is impossible as long as rail freight owns the tracks. Your idea is valid, but Kampala will never take the money from the illegals to pay for this job

Aliens built the first railroads. You know high-speed rails will not use the same tracks; they need new ones. Congressional incentives could adjust railroad owners' attitudes.
