You've made the classic liberal mistake which is to expect your conservative opponent to be rational. He isn't.

If he can't find a job he'll blame Blacks or Jews or Immigrants or Single Mothers. He'll blame Protestants or Catholics or Huguenots or Muslims (and how!) He'll blame Communists or Freemasons or International Jewry.
