What is your favorite instant messenger/chat network?

What are people using these days? Any compelling reasons to use one over the other?

Gaim at http://gaim.sourceforge.net.

This is an open source project which attempts to support all the chat programs, making no difference between a buddy on AIM or one on Yahoo! or one on MSN...

It's a lot easier to use than Trillian, but it doesn't show emoticons!

BTW I had install problems with 1.0.2. I had to use the "runtime" (underlaying toolset application) from 1.0.1

I myself like Trillian. I love that I can talk to my yahoo and AIM buddies at the same time and only have one buddy list on my screen. It is a bit trickier than GAIM, but I need my emoticons :p

I couldn't figure out how to create my own list separate from my husband's in Trillian, so I tried Easy Message. It's free, relatively small, and is a great integrated, no-frills program.

I guess I'm getting anti-social in my old age, I have ICQ, never fire it up anymore, have Yahoo Messenger, don't use that anymore either.

I like yahoo.. ICQ sucks and msn doesn't have a real invisible option.

I didn't know you could intregrate the IM's!

I use yahoo and MSN. Love Yahoo and its stealth mode. I chose who sees me and when. :)

Yep, there are programs out there that will let you run all the popular ones (Yahoo, AIM, MSN, ICQ...) at once. Trilian and Gaim are two of the better ones I've come across - and they're free!

Thanks for the reponses:

I guess I wasn't as clear as I should have been- I was more interested in what network is the most popular, and should I get myelsf a yahoo/msn/other account.

I have Miranda at work, and kopete (for linux) at home. I used to use Trillian, but decided I liked the minimalist interface of Miranda.

In my personal experience, AIM and Yahoo seem to be the most popular. All my friends fall into those two categories. I haven't heard of Miranda and kopete, but if you're running Linux and like simplicity, I'd recommend Gaim.

I found Yahoo easy to use and powerful. Besides wouldn't use MSN because MS is the devil LOL
