When in Rome...

'Perk of the job' I tell you.
'I'm one floor down' The principal needs us to watch his daughter so we can't be anywhere else'
A waiter brings the menu's over.
'Pick whatever you want it's all on expenses.'
I watch you as you take in your surroundings.

I feel myself ease up as you relax in your chair and smile at me. When the waiter returns I order 'cafe freddo' and water. It was hot and even in the shade of the terrace I felt a little bead of sweat roll down my back. 'So how did you get into private security?'

'A mispent youth in the Armed Forces brought me to this line of work five years ago, a friend invited me to join a team and after two years of that I went freelance; not looked back since.'
'How about you? How did you get to be in Rome today?'
I take a sip of my freddo, the cool of the glass felt soothing in my hand.
'Aren't you taking a big risk just walking off with me and leaving your friends?'

'Should I be worried?' I raise an eyebrow and set my coffee down with a sideways smile.
'I'm here just enjoying some time off work and traveling. My friends are touring all day and I was getting tired of listening to that tour guide.'

'Worried?' I laugh 'No not at all, I'm enjoying myself, it's not often you get a bit of time to yourself and not have to talk about the next route or the next task.'
I sit back in my seat, coffee in hand.
'Besides I'm enjoying the view' I grin back at you.
