Where DID they get that name from?

STYX

Styx is a mythical river that people crossed over to go into Hell

side note: they originally were a garage band from the South side of Chicago that called themselves the TW4 (There Were 4) and used to play at my High School dances

You see, you DO learn something every day .... :D

Hiya Yes!

jefferson airplane

blind lemon jefferson was one of jorma kaukonen's favorite delta bluesmen. jorma suggested blind jefferson airplane as a name. the band selected another but used blind jefferson airplane amongst themselves. evidently that got confusing, because they migrated to jefferson airplane.

oh yeah, morning good music people.

This is cool ..... thanks for that, Jack .... I'm glad I thought of this now .... :D

Pulp

Originally called themselves Arabacus Pulp (after a commodity Jarvis Cocker learned about during economics lessons). This was shortened to Pulp because nobody else knew what the full name meant ....

Rolling Stones

After the tape was rejected by EMI, Taylor left the band to attend the Royal College of Art; he would later form the Pretty Things. Before Taylor's departure, the group named itself the Rolling Stones, borrowing the moniker from a Muddy Waters song.

Chicago

their original name was Chicago Transit Authority...which is the bus system in Chicago....(CTA) the Chicago Transit Authority sued them thus the name Chicago

Morning all

David Bowie

He didn't go by his given name 'David Jones', not wanting to be confused with Davy Jones of the Monkees, who were big at the time. Supposedly, he took his last name from the Bowie knife, which he reputedly had some sort of fascination with ....

Damn there's one I knew but had forgotten

Thanks Yes!! I didn't know that. See how much you learn from wonderful people? :D

Darn, I should start looking at previous pages... My bud, CJH, listed the Muddy Waters relationship to the Stones, already, darn it.

Jefferson Airplane

Edit...

Darn... CJH beat me to it...

The Kinks

The Ravens recorded their debut single, a cover of Little Richard's "Long Tall Sally," in January 1964. Before the single was released, the group changed their name to the Kinks.

Yes, that's good, Veebs ..... but WHY did they call themselves the Kinks? This is the burning question ..... :D

We need to know ..... ;)

guns n' roses

taken from two bands in which axl rose had previously played: hollywood roses, and la guns

Just to expand on that, Jack ....

Guns 'N’ Roses

Guns ‘N’ Roses took their names from their guitarist Tracii Guns and vocalist Axl Rose. They had both been in L. A. Guns (named after Tracii) together previously but Axl left to form Rose, later Hollywood Rose but then they decided to form a new group together and called it Guns ‘N’ Roses. Tracii and Axl didn’t see eye to eye so Tracii left and reformed L. A. Guns and Axl replaced Tracii with Slash but kept the group's name.

:D

I knew if I sat here long enough I would finally remember the name The Who started out with.

The Who began as The Detours, a band started by guitarist Roger Daltrey in 1961 (yes he was a guitarist).

In early 1964, The Detours discovered a rival group also named The Detours, and decided to change their name.A friend of Pete Townsends suggested The Who and so they have remained ever since.

'Everything But The Girl'

The two members saw a bridal shop named 'Everything But The Girl' in London maybe? I forget where.... but the shop had everything one needed for a wedding - but the girl!

;)

Yes, I remember now, I've heard that one too ..... :D

Hi Cate!

Re: I Remember!!!

10 Years After
Fronted by guitarist Alvin Lee, who may have been the world's fastest guitar player..
The band was born in the 60's... ten years after rock and roll..

They can been seen in the Woodstock movie, playing "Going Home"

Side note...
Saw them once in concert at a three day rock festival around 1971... I vibrated for hours after!!!
One of only two band I remember... lol
The other being Jethro Tull's first performance of "Aqualung"

BAY CITY ROLLERS - They blindly stuck a pin on a map. It landed on Bay City, Michigan.

I think 10cc felt they were better than most guys.. as apparently the average guy only ejaculates 3cc!!! :p

AC/DC

Falsely assumed to be an acronym for Anti-Christ Devil's Children, the actual origin of the name has a much more innocent meaning. The Young's sister, Margaret suggested it after she had seen it on the back of a vacuum cleaner, although another story said on the back of a sewing machine. The band rather naïvely didn't realise the significance of the term AC/DC in sexual terms, which supposedly caused much amusement in the early days of the band ......
