I see this as a metaphor for the readers consuming each week's stories as if they were pieces of popcorn or whatever. Each individual story is as important as each piece in the bowl - not at all important of course.

Well, there's the old days like when Kris Kristofferson was in college and he got two stories published in the Atlantic Monthly. On-line, one can churn out two-hundred stories and they'll probably all get published here. There's a trade-off for everything.
