Why do we like beauty?

I was just writing about this the other day: to me, there's often a disconnect between "beauty" (defined as fulfilling society's beauty myth in the sort of way that lands one on the cover of Cosmopolitan) and "sexiness."

I look at many objectively beautiful women and I seldom have an urge to fuck them. By contrast, I often meet women in life who, despite their lack of classically-proportioned good looks, strike me as urgently sexy.

Not sure if that adds anything to the discussion. But.

I definitely feel the same way. It's one of the reasons I never used number ratings to characterize someone's appearance. Numbers don't capture at all how I might respond to someone's beauty, attractiveness, appeal, sexiness, whatever.

But different cultures can have very different ideas of beauty. One common thing, I think, is regularity of features.
why did I add a sad emoji to this post?

Because as someone blessed with a lack of bilateral symmetry, I can attest to the truth. It has been a silent challenge all my life. Almost nobody is willing to be honest enough to admit it.

Partly it's a language thing. In English we have two words beautiful and pretty. Try explaining to a foreign learner what the difference is and why you would classify a person as one, or the other, or both. I mean, I use these words, as a native speaker, and think they are different though strongly overlapping... but explaining it? And once you've done that impossible thing for breakfast, bring in attractive, handsome, good-looking...

But I do maintain there is some uncapturable common thread in beauty: the Cat's Eye Nebula, a new beech leaf in spring, Barbara Stanwyck, a cat in its stillness, the musings of Sei Shonagon: something profound in what tugs at us. And note this is where language drops away; we don't have separate lists for prettiness or attractiveness.

And no, beauty contest winners almost never trigger that magical feeling in me.

As they say “beauty is in the eye of the beholder”. In all honesty it’s preference apples to oranges which can be sucky if he likes oranges and you’re an apple.

But overall, I think that if you fine yourself beautiful that means a lot even though humans tend to want validation.

It’s rough, unfortunately, but just be kind to yourself. :)

Sounds like BS to me.
I'll admit I have an unusually high tolerance for pretentious twaddle but, even so, I think there's actually a small kernel of truth to it.

There are, after all, an awful lot of poems mourning the transience of beauty.

Someone smarter than me might also be able to make a cogent argument that men lack women's ability to give birth - and this has created a subtle but discernible difference between the sexes in their attitudes towards beauty.

If we accept there's a link between beauty and the passage of time and vitality, then the ability to create life might also plausibly affect one's attitude towards beauty. The argument would then go that men have a slightly more desperate attitude towards beauty - a slightly unhealthy obsession with female physical beauty - and that's in part because men lack women's ability to create life.

Or not, of course. It's just an idea.

You need spermatazoa and an ovum to create life. It’s not an exclusively female thing. Gestating life is another thing. I don’t see the connecting TBH.

True love arrives when 'I love you despite ...' becomes 'I couldn't love you without ...'

Not read it.
Stephen King classic.
Made into a movie. Kathy Bates won an Oscar as the obsessed fan who chains her favourite novelist (James Caan) to the bed, and smashs his ankles when he tries to leave.

Wikipedia says:
"In 2014, WhatCulture ranked Kathy Bates' role first in top "10 Most Convincing Movie Psychopath Performances", Taste of Cinema ranked the film 7th among the "30 Great Psychopath Movies That Are Worth Your Time", and GamesRadar+ named Annie one of the "50 Creepiest Movie Psychopaths." "

I would think both sexes can see the beauty in the opposite sex.just a matter of seeing that beauty sexually or just beauty?
