i wonder if palin became vp, how would she deal with northern ireland politicians, colonel gaddafi, nelson mandela, or any other world politicians with terrorist pasts/links?

Most likely refuse to associate with or talk to them unless they agree to begin a path towards democracy... or something as equally nonsensical and vague.

Or she'll meet with them and happily shake their hands while brushing off all accusations of hypocrisy as sexism.

Or maybe she'd just toss her hair bank, wink 'em right in the eye, and ask if they want some more hot sauce for their wings....and oops, is that my lovely pink boob sticking in your face, Mr. Prime Minister? I'm so sorry, gosh darn it, doncha know?

I think she has a real toughness and grit to her. The Barracuda. I'm more of a fiscal conservative not a social one. But my one friend on our local board would have probably either not voted or voted for Barr, and now all that has changed. He's really fired up about Palin. She's going to bring all the people back who sat out in 2006. Will it be enough? We won't know until the fat lady sings.

My dog has toughness and grit too, anyone that votes for that ticket because of her is delusional...

well...

OK...

Same folks that voted for Bush...

twice!

I'm really not clear on how Iraq protects my personal American freedoms. In justifying Iraq, there are wiretappings, intimidations, and lies, new lows. Sounds questionable.

I think in wanting the fighting men and women of my country deployed judiciously, intelligently, as last resort, and to protect important strategic national interests - INSISTING on this, is patriotic and supportive of those people.

If people wanted to have some kind of multinational police action to liberate the downtrodden masses under Hussein, then sell it to me like that. Don't lie and tell me this is about keeping them off my doorstep.

Those people are in Afghanistan, they're only in Iraq now because it's been destabilized to that degree, and frankly we might as well have just given the whole thing to Iran during the Iran/Iraq war for all the good this is doing.

If anyone's wondering why a lot of people are fed up, getting nasty, and losing the veneer of politeness it's because we've had our very patriotism questioned every time we're at a loss over the last 8 years.

Know who served in the Marines, WD? Did his time? 6 years as the Marines/Navy JUST got integrated?

Crazy preacherman Jeremaiah Wright.

This whole "you can't possibly get it, all of you have nothing at stake" meme doesn't fly. A lot of people are in the military, married to the military, children in the military, half the block with kids in the military and DO NOT WANT.

On 30 October 1954 the Secretary of Defense announced that the last racially segregated unit in the armed forces of the United States had been abolished. Wright joined in 1961.

You are wound up tight as a drum. Maybe you should pop the cork about 8 and be in a better mood for the debate.

Wright doesn't bother me. Like I said before he was in the entertainment business and at the same time probably did a lot of good things. He's got his shining house on a hill in a gated community now with all those Goddam white people.

Why didn't she have anything to say to the person recommending assassination of a presidential candidate?

Nice "values."

See stuff like that is what frustrates me to no end.

I'm not a big fan of any of them at this point, but if/when I hear people around me say things like that about any of the candidates, I say something. Free speech or not, you don't get to threaten the life of a VP or POTUS candidate. You just don't. It's irresponsible to stay silent, or try passing it off as a joke, or pretend it's just some "Joe six pack" voicing his god given right to free speech.

She had a chance to take the higher road. She had a chance to stand up and say "Look - regardless of our politics, threatening the lives of Americans is not okay, and will not be tolerated by this campaign" - but she didn't.

Do you have it on youtube? I couldn't find it. I know I can never understand what a heckler is yelling out of a large crowd. I imagine it's even harder if you are speaking at the time.

I know you are a little tiny bit partisan but there is that possibility.

Hmm, let's see...

Dad was in the army, so was his dad, and he had one grandfather that was army and one that was navy. Way more as you go back in the family history. My mom was army too, and and I had two uncles in the army. One of my cousins is a navy wife.

My best friend from high school is a surgeon in army (that somehow wound up in combat in Iraq), a good friend from college went from being stationed in Bosnia direct to Iraq, no stop. I've had 10-12 of my friends deployed in Iraq or Afghanistan, or on maneuvers in the Gulf in support. One of my best friends is over there right now on a ship in the Gulf.

I live in one of the strongest concentrations of military and military bases in the country, and am surrounded by military service men and women.

Do not want? It's tough to find someone that does want. Plenty of them serve because it's their duty, but privately, they admit to it being fucked.

Out of all of those people, only one wanted to go back, and he was a civilian IT contractor. It's tough to turn down a $200k/year job (mostly tax free) when you're used to making $60k/year here. And even he left it early on his last tour and doubts he'll go back.

(Fun fact: He was working in support of Blackwater on his first tour. The things he said when he got back were scary. Not because of what they did per se, but more because of the attitudes casually displayed amongst the men he was working with. Scary, scary people.)

I heard a clip of it on my local talk radio show (Mark Davis, who stood in for Rush yesterday) - she was talking about Obama and the crowd was booing every time she paused, then some idiot yelled KILL HIM! when she next paused... she went right on with her speech.

Maybe she did miss it. If she had a shred of decency she might say something after the 8 million replays this thing is getting?

Silence.

Well the secret service were there. They should have handled it. Perhaps if she did hear it she thought that it was better to ignore it than give it credibility by stopping the speech. If she stopped and made a citizens arrest you'd probably say she was just being political. Right?

FFS can you please just admit it was handled poorly? Yes I'm sure the SS was there to deal with it (and I hope they did); no I didn't expect her to make a citizen's arrest.

I am busting my ass to raise children who know it's not only okay to speak up against assholes and bullies, but that if enough people do so the world might become a better place. Because threatening, harassing hate speech is not okay, and people have a responsibility to stand up against it and set an example - especially people who are in positions of power. Call it anti-terrorism on a small scale.

*picks up her magic fairy wand and dissapears*

Ask her not me. I don't know what she heard. I though we were innocent until proven guillty. Lets find out if she did understand what was said. And if she did hear it why she didn't respond.

Reminds me of reading about McCain's speech where when he paused after quoting Obama, someone yelled "terrorist". That was ignored too, although after the speech the campaign was quick to say they didnt condone that kind of talk..

I agree with you, WD.

Although I don't expect to hear her actual thoughts on it, given her sequestration from the press and scripted responses and all.

If there is any kind of response, I'm sure it'll be a campaign press release to the effect of, "While Gov. Palin and Senator McCain respect every American's right to free speech, of course they are shocked and outraged at the comment. They do not condone violence and expect the Secret Service to handle any investigation with the utmost efficiency and competency."

Well that's a first. She is drawing huge crowds.

Don't hold your breath.

Damn that debate was a tepid leftocvers from the last debate serving.

You want to have it all your way don't you?

Give us all a break and admit that she is indefensible.

Hard to argue with this. I know it may be taken as a bit silly, but damn it's pretty right on, isn't it?

Democracy at its best! I've seen highschool students have better debates, in the playground, debating the merits of their lunches. Let the mudslinging comence.

Why are a lot of republicans up in arms over the unretouched photo of Palin on Newsweek? (Example here, pic below, link to larger pic HERE.)

She's all about being "real" and "just folks," right? If that's the case, then what's the problem of a photo that shows she has wrinkles, pores and a little facial hair, just like nearly every woman over 35 in the country? Regular "flaws" and all, she looks great for a woman around 45 with five kids.

The republicans could use this to their advantage by saying it further supports she's an everyday woman and is a good example of how unretouched women can be beautiful. I just don't get why many of them are raising a big stink over this, insisting the truth of her face is unflattering and she needs to be airbrushed.
