Im not sure if this is the right place, so please bare with me...
Im working on a story and would like some feedback/help on why guys and girls get into the porn business; I doubt that it is for the money or the glory - or am I wrong?

Thanks for all help and comments!

I'm not sure either. Perhaps...

Feeling stuck - maybe someone left home (for a thousand reasons) and didn't have marketable skills. Lack of education can lead to lack of confidence about getting jobs.

Money - I don't think there's much money in it for what the job entails. But it might look enticing and the "Getting paid to have sex? Hell yes," thoughts prevail. I'm sure the industry has its dark side and young people are manipulated and drawn into it.

Opportunity - goes with the money issue I'd think. Maybe the thought of "I'll do one or two films and with the money I'll ..." comes into play here.

I do think people get seduced into a false image of it. I'm sure there are people that are very happy with their job but I think they are few and far between.

Perhaps for a woman it could be the opportunity of stopping complying with what is expected of her, in an extreme. non-reversible way?

To find out many answers to your question, you need to read a book called Naked Ambition, edited by Carly Milne. In it are essays by women who perform, produce, direct and do PR for porn, but there are also contributions for women who review it, run adult toy shops and so forth, so there is a wide range. You will find that there are some really intelligent, well-spoken, independent women in the biz, they just happen to have different goals and ambitions than most women. I loved the essays by Nina Hartley, who has been in porn for 25 years, now directing and producing a line of sex education videos for couples. Yes, there are hard luck cases in the industry and it's not all rose gardens, but there are horror stories from every profession and it is changing all the time. You might also check out the website of Audacia Ray, www.wakingvixen.com, as she is a NY-based performer/director/educator/writer and has many insightful things to say about a choice which is personal and highly individual. Also, again Nina Hartley has a blog on her website which is funny and informative and the same goes for newcomer/trailblazer, Joanna Angel, on her site and the new "alt-porn" fashion she started.

Also check out http://eros-zine.com/top.htm for some great interviews with various porn stars. I always find it interesting to read those about European porn stars or those who shoot here but are from overseas, where there can be quite a different attitude about porn, where women can be involved in both mainstream modeling and porn, and even some have successfully moved into politics with this in their past and no one had a problem with it! :)

Chi-Guy31 is on the right track. This is definitely something you can research through anecodotes and biographies.

However, the reasons are as varied as the people in the business and for a fictional depiction any logical reason you can imagine that will suit the needs of the story you're trying to tell will suffice.

The links Chi-Guy31 provided generally present the positive motivations. Look for "Linda Lovelace's" book or Tracy Lords' history for some of the negative reasons.

One of the biggest reasons people start doing porn, they want to become an actor but need some time in front of a camera. Generally there are two ways to get that, be a model and you get tons of pictures of you which oddly seems to be enough, or do porn.

Sylvester Stalone was in one porn movie, Fran Drescher is supposed to have appeared in a scene, though not to sure, the picture was really low quality, could have been my mother.

Appearing in Playboy or Penthouse seem to be a good way of getting a role or two, though generally nothing more than the pretty face that gets killed fast or one of the sluts in those softcore porn movies.

Of course there is one more way, get a job and show up for every single casting call, but generally when your just off the bus from middle of nowwhere Kansas the first guy coming up to you saying 'Oh my god, you are gorgeous here is my card I am a talent scout and I think you could be an actor.' Tends to work.

thanks fo the tips and ideas
they are helpfull

could anyone also tell me what or how much a girl would be getting for a porn flick, her first?
Nad would it matter what kind of porn/ for what company she would make it?

thanks again!

I was under the impression that many girls got started stripping and then progressed to doing porn.

I knew one girl who was in over a dozen movies and had some sort of big magazine contract. Her family was really messed up. Her step dad was a hippie drug user/grower/seller and the family lived in a few countries in odd living arrangements. I suspect that she and her younger sister had been introduced to sex at a VERY early age with the consent (and possibly participation) of the step dad. She's been doing the escort business for a while, and I'm pretty sure that she did some stripping. She's very attractive and I suspect that the escort business has been the most profitable for her. She also has a significant drinking problem. It's sad, because she seems like a really nice girl. She doesn't really seem to understand how the real world works, and seemed awkward in regular social situations. It didn't help that she didn't have any idea about appropriate dress outside of Vegas.

I knew another girl who did some stripping in college because it paid better than regular jobs. I knew another girl who worked as a waitress at a strip club and actually stripped once. The strip club paid well, but the people were unbearable.

Oh my bad I never said how much they get for a first movie. I actually know this, though the number is a decade old now I think.

Anyway a fresh faced woman doing porn makes $400-$600 per scene, a fresh faced guy unless he is doing gay porn makes $80-200 per scene, a gay scene pays about the same as for a woman.

The big name straight guys make I think it's $4000-$8000 a movie. A big name woman, well there we are talking $10000+. There are more men looking to do porn than woman why the men make less except for gay porn. ;)

They gotta love to have sex ya know - The money comes with the game especially if your a chick -

Maybe some people do it for the attention - or just want a penis slapped on their face

When you spend your high school years getting pounded behind the bleachers, you tend to lack any other marketable skills. And besides, as far as Americans go, there´s nothing worse than working as a cashier. Considering the turnover rates for women in porn, I´´m sure that there are quite a few women who thought, "Work at Burger King, or get fucked by a professional?" Little did they know...

My favorite quote is "No one goes into porn because something good happened to them."

Well, it's quite a generalization as well. Again, there are so many differing backgrounds when it comes to both men and women in porn, both here and overseas. And sure some had bad things happen to them while growing up, but you know what, so did I, so did the checkout girl at the supermarket, so did your doctor, your lawyer and your friends. Big deal, we all have had awful things happen to us and it's not limited to guys & gals who perform in porn. And there are those in porn who had perfectly normal childhoods...

I agree with you. There must be some horrid stories out there for sure but that's not exclusive to the porn business as far as exploitation goes. And I think there are quite a few women who do very well in porn and have made a very comfortable life for themselves. Take Jenna Jameson, for instance. Here's one that treated her carreer in porn very wisely and is more like a very wise business women than she is just a pornstar, you know?

Essex your a nincompoop. :p

I spent plenty of time on my back, knees or pressed up against the supports of the bleachers. Reminds me those supports are a tad painful to be pressed against by a rather horny football player.

I still graduated, i still moved out of my parents house out of the city and state even. I held a few jobs, sometimes I was a cashier sometimes a waitress, I even was a secretary for a short period. I got fired because I would not screw my boss and I can't organize to save my life.

Oh don't look at me like that he was ugly, overweight, and older than my dad.
