The war broke out before any foreigners got involved.

Militarily (and even that isn't true, "advisors" = SF) but not politically/economically.

When they chose Russia over the US for oil access/lines/contracts etc (that's a deep, separate ball of shit) American Democrats (those who lost) started a proxy war with Russia who NEEDS this line and started assisting rebels to overthrow Assad.

That's why Putin was saying

'If you elect Clinton, if you strip my country of all dignity by denying the deal my country and Syria struck.....you will be killing my people and I will be FORCED to attack you starting WWIII.'

They killed police and protesters and then ambushed an army convoy heading to the scene.
