He said nothing to her as he ate. The food was good, in fact, it was delicious. Normally, he would have complimented her on it, but, right now, he was wondering whether or not she had deceived him. If she had, the consequences were going to be severe. What they were he hadn’t decided yet.
When he was almost finished, he pushed the plate away. “Sit down,” he said sternly as he pointed to the chair across from him. He waited until she was seated and then stared into her eyes. “I am going to ask you one time and one time only, do you understand.”
He awaited her acknowledgement and, once she confirmed that she understood, he continued. “I have been led to believe that you may have been deceptive when speaking about the men who killed your husband. Is that true? Were you ducking them like a two bit white and he walked in on you and then they killed him?”
Lucas continued to stare at Elizabeth. He was trying to gauge whether her answer would be deceptive. He was also focusing on just how severe the consequences would be if she had deceived him.
