Went down a rabbit hole tonight looking at Chick Tracts. Little evangelical comic booklets with some of the worst "Christian" theology I've ever come across. Some of these are wild.

I'm pretty sure these things drove way more people away from church than brought them in.
Just curious... @PrettyLilPussy19... are these familiar to you? Is this a Baptist thing? Pentecostal? Or are they as confusing to you as they are to me?

I'm pretty sure these things drove way more people away from church than brought them in.
Just curious... @PrettyLilPussy19... are these familiar to you? Is this a Baptist thing? Pentecostal? Or are they as confusing to you as they are to me?
I don’t know about their impact on religion but I had a couple friends who couldn’t play D&D because of these.

It’s okay, we played Gamma World for a while, until one of their mom’s decided mutations were like magic. So we switched to Star Frontiers 🤣. I’ve always liked Sci-Fi more than fantasy anyway.

I'm not familiar with the anti D&D ones but I've seen probably 40 different versions of a chick tract growing up. I'd say they are Southern Baptist, full of stupidity amd hate and often left in lieu of a tip at a restaurant.

I don't know if it was because of chick tracts or the fallout from the 80s Satanic Panic but I wasnt allowed to play D&D, read Harry Potter or even watch The Smurfs growing up. 🙄

Back in high school my friends and I played a lot of Magic: the Gathering. Until one of their moms found his cards and flipped out. Eventually she relented a little bit, but he wasn't allowed to play with black in any of his decks. The other game we played a lot of back then was Vampire: the Eternal Struggle, and that was a hard "no" from her.

... I quit playing Magic after I went to college (just not something my college friends were interested in) and gave most of my cards away. I had some good ones that, if I'd kept them and sold them today, would pay my rent. Oh well.

It seems the anti-D&D ones were printed in the early 80's during the height of the Satanic Panic.
There's a Baptist (I'm not entirely sure what flavor of Baptist, but Southern Baptist seems a good bet) congregation that rents our sanctuary on Sunday afternoons. They have boxes of these things. I had never seen one before in my life until I started at this church. I thought it was a joke - like "these are so stupid, they can't possibly be real."

Some people just love to bask in their own shittiness. I have to wonder what the thought process is there... other than just being a selfish cheap-ass.

Freak of nature snowpacalypse in the South, go into work alone for a few hours, come out to go pick up some groceries for a home bound friend, and I GOT TRACTs on my car!!!

I don’t know what Tony Alamo accomplished besides abusing a bunch of kids but the Fugitive Pope pamphlets were a common joke when I was in high school. They really give decent believers a bad name. IMG_6223.jpeg .

Oh, man... they still pop up from time to time. I think it was maybe 10 years ago there was a much slicker, glossier Tony Alamo newsletter on my car windshield. I just googled him and he died 8 years ago, so maybe his people have found something better to do with their time. I doubt it.
