Word order question

Hi all,

I’m in middle of editing a new story and when I read this phrase out loud I can’t decide what the best order of words is.

Which sounds better to you?

“black, thong string bikini” or “black, string thong bikini”

Any thoughts would be appreciated!

I think string has to do with the material across the hip and thong has to do with ass coverage. I would think thong kind of implies string, but you’d be disappointed if I didn’t go fit the details.

I agree with your conclusion, btw. Black thong bikini paints the better image of the two options.

I often have the same issue. I'm forever flipping the word sequence in descriptions like this. Spontaneous draft is in one order, considered edit another. Sometimes I deliberately make it "wrong", for effect.

Agreed. I would not use the two terms together in any order. I'd be more included to expand the description somehow.

Not really. A thong is underwear, a bikini is, well technically swimwear. But now that I think about it; I believe technically bikini bottoms are actally called thongs, because the bikini is actually the top. Which makes calling it a thong bikini, or bikini thong, as redundant as saying queso cheese. But english language gonna do what it does, because now "thong" pretty much refers to the lingerie underwear. And now I'm wondering which came first, or if lingerie thongs are a spin off of the swimwear thong.

Saying bikini thong, is like saying "these are my slacks jeans." Even if a string bikini thong exist--it does, not all string bikini bottoms look like thongs.

It's a context problem rather than a word order problem. Are they in the bedroom or on the beach? For either, 'black thong' will do.

Another thing to consider: as someone with mild dyslexia, I keep reading either version as thing strong or strong thing.

I'd reword it completely so you don't trip readers up. "Her black bikini had a string tied snuggly at either hip. The thong style covering left little to the imagination."

Both phrases have their own rhythm, but "black, string thong bikini" flows a bit more naturally. The "string" before "thong" creates a smoother transition in the sounds. However, if you're aiming for a specific effect or emphasis, either could work depending on the context.
