Writer's Challenge: Magic In America

Chain stories aren't a problem, once you've established (a) a theme, and (b) a timetable. Liaise with Laurel, submit when it's your turn and you're away. I think this would work as a chain, incidentally, if a timetable were established. Not a suggestion, merely a comment.

I'm going to post an official sign-up thread and rules. I don't have dates yet, I figure we can work that out when we have a few people signed up. This way, people who have ideas can begin working on them.:)

That's 5 writers and 1 illustrator. We'll call this the 'first wave' and aim to post our stories/pics in approximation to one another.

How long do you think you all need to get your story written?

(Reply on the Discussion Board-- ie, here!;))

le sweet und petite one asked:

"How long do you think you all need to get your story written?"

Depends on when I'm supposed to have it finished. If I have lots of work at the same time...ages. Else, a week or two. I'm not really all that fast a writer.

How long? Dunno. I haven't got the idea yet, and I'm long-winded. And I write slow...

Did I mentioned I procrastinate? lol

Anyway, I'd say set a deadline that's generous, given the whole deal with people wanting to do both challenges, then see if there are any complaints or disagreeances. Just my .02

Nice to see this is aboutto happen, BTW.

Sounds generous to me...

Moreso than I expected, but then, I don't know the other challenges and their deadlines...

March 1st sounds good. Two weeks before I'm due to start marking my lot's latest assignments!

I just picked my birthday!

Because I didn't know what today's date was, so I didn't know how much of January was left, lol.

I'm thinking of giving Black Tulip an earlier deadline, because she already has an idea and it sounds so tantalizing.

Plus, with a somewhat relaxed deadline, people still have time to work on a Valentines Story if they want, without having to choose one over the other (I think, for the most part).

I can live with that. Should be abe to get something done by then.

I don't think poems will be able to be joined in under the chain story category (unless they are story length and submitted as a story) but I do want to include them in the challenge. I just feel that I'd like to have a variety of expression for this particular themes.

Anyone who can write an original *song* go on 'audio story' and actually *sing* it (and sound good) will be my hero!:D

I think I'm getting carried away. But I just think that this is a good place for whatever kind of creative expression you can think up!

If anyone wants to use these, they can.. Not my best work, but took them when I first started photography.. Most are negative inverse (I was having fun with the digital camera) but they look spiffy that way and have actually inspired a few ideas for fantasy stories for me.

Trees along a river:

Last one for now, if anyone wants anything more, or anything specific, let me know..

Wasn't sure which thread to post this on.

I think I have my idea, which will mostly be a newer version fo an older story, an Indian tale I read online. I can't remember which tribe.

It's odd, because in a very severe way, this idea blends with a story I wrote when I was in high school. Very severe way. To the extent that the very idea behind it is almost a xerox copy, with different characters. My plan is to blend them together.

If that's okay, I mean. There's... well, sort of magic, kind of lore, kind of ... well, supernatural. I can PM you more details if you need them, sweetnpetite.

Should I post this on the other threads too?

Cantdog, I'll send you the story as soon as I finish it. Don't expect it too soon. LOL

This thread is fine- I was going to start one titled 'discussion thread' but I figured this one was already going so I'd just use it. (mighty fine of me, hu?:D)

Sounds like a fine story idea Q_C.

I never did figure out if we were going to have some kind of 'approval' method for stories before posting them or what.

Any thoughts on this? (Q_C or anyone else?)

The problem with approval is that someone has to read everything that is written to know whether or not it fits in with the theme. Who wants to do all that?

If you want, I guess the two of us could try. I'll volunteer to a point, as I've already volunteered to a point for nearly everything anyway. It's your call overall, sweetnpetite.

I'm game if you are.

On the other hand, I'd hate to exclude anyone...

I just want to make sure that people are taking it seriously and do their best work.

Maybe we could do it on the 'honor system':)

I am patient as well as willing, Q_C. It sounds like something I can get my teeth into, as it were.

Since it's a chain story, and each work is idividual, I don't see any reason to do anything like "approve" a story beforehand. For one reason, they already go through a fairly rigorous approval process to begin with - I know, the spellchecker spit my halloween story back out because of the creole language I had used in it, and I had to beg Laurel to personally look at it.

And for another reason....it almost smacks of elitism. I mean no harm by saying that, please don't take it that way, but my idea of what fits into the chain, and someone else's idea might be totally different. I've never even known for chain stories to have to be vetted by the chain starter before they're even submitted to Lit.

Make as few rules as you can, it's just easier on everybody. And, frankly, if it's going to be that nitpicky, I'll just submit my story as a stand-alone, and find another chain to participate in. I don't have time for all that. We're all adults here, and most of us take our writing halfway seriously, so I honestly don't see the need to get that detailed about it.
